Malaysia wins their first ASEAN Cup

QĐND – Thursday, December 30, 2010, 20:37 (GMT+7)

Malaysia beat Indonesia 4-2 on aggregate to win the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup for the first time in the country’s history on Dec. 29 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A loss of 1-2 to the hosts in the final’s second leg match could not stop Malaysia from opening a new chapter in the history of the regional football tournament which up until now had been dominated by three-time winners Thailand and Singapore.

Mohd Safee Sali opened the scoring for Malaysia nine minutes after the break. Until then Indonesia had made things difficult for their opponents, attacking aggressively with a view to levelling the three-goal deficit they faced after the first leg match.

The talented player who scored twice in the semi-final against Vietnam got his goal after he received a long-range pass and shot truly into the net.

The goal made him the top striker of the tournament with five goals to his name.

Indonesia, with their President watching on, found their equaliser in the 71st minute when defender Mohammad Nasuha scored from near the edge of the box.

His team doubled their tally 17 minutes later when Muhammad Ridwan scored his third goal at the tournament. His strong shot deflected off a Malaysian player before entering the net.

Malaysia is surprise winner of the tournament. At the previous championship two years ago they were ousted in the qualifying round.

This time they were placed in the ‘group of death’ together with Thailand and Indonesia and after their humiliating 1-5 loss to hosts Indonesia in the group stage, no one gave them a chance.

The team, which only made it through to the knockout stage after Thailand, the most powerful team in Southeast Asia, was eliminated from the championship.

However, after that they had a complete reversal of form. First there was a great 2-0 victory over defending champion Vietnam in the semi-final and then a 3-0 victory over Indonesia in the final’s first leg on Dec. 26.

It has been be a very successful year for Malaysia with two important titles going to them in the last twelve months. Last December Malaysia defeated Vietnam 1-0 to claim the Southeast Asian Games Cup.

The Dec. 29 match did not help Indonesia’s coach Alfred Riedl shake off his ‘Mr Silver’ moniker. Once again, he pocketed a silver medal, just as he has done on every single occasion he has taken a team to a tournament final. The previous occasions were when he worked with Vietnam several years back.

DPRK lift Millennium Cup after draw

QĐND – Saturday, September 25, 2010, 21:17 (GMT+7)

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) U-23 team drew against hosts Vietnam in a goalless match today but still managed to win the Millennium Thang Long-Hanoi Football Cup at My Dinh stadium on September 24.

The DPRK team, which took two wins over Kuwait and Australia, placed first with seven points.

After beating Kuwait 3-0 and losing to Australia 2-0, Vietnam was placed second with four points, after edging out Australia on goal difference.

In the early match on September 24, Australia were held to a goalless draw by Kuwait, which left the Australian Olyroos in third place at the tournament.

The DPRK team, which featured six World Cup players, set up a strong defence to block Vietnam’s attacks.

Vietnamese strikers failed to penetrate the DPRK’s defence, firing only long shots at goal.

Captain Nguyen Minh Phuong had the best chance in the first half time when he lobbed the ball from the edge, but it was saved by the DPRK goalie.

In the second half, the DPRK threatened the hosts with their rapid counterattacks, but Vietnamese keeper Duong Hong Son put in a good performance to save all the shots.

During the last 10 minutes, Portuguese coach Calisto bolstered his strikers, which he hoped would break the DPRK’s defence, but the hosts failed to net the ball.

The DPRK team walked away with a US$20,000 cash prize, while Vietnam pocketed US$10,000.

The tournament was held to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the capital city.

After the tournament, Vietnam will be defending their title in the ASEAN Football Federation-Suzuki Cup, which is co-hosted by Vietnam and Indonesia and will run from December 1 to 29.

U23 Vietnam wins Eximbank Cup 2010

QĐND – Sunday, October 03, 2010, 20:36 (GMT+7)

The U23 Vietnam men’s football team defeated Iran 2-0 at the final match of the Eximbank Cup 2010 at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City on October 2.

The team under head coach Phan Thanh Hung chose to play defense against its much stronger opponent and the players successfully stood against continuous attacks from Iran.

In the late minutes of the first half, Vietnam accelerated the pace of the match with Le Van Thang and Dinh Thanh Trung running fast down the wings. In the 45th minute, striker Anh Duc received a pass from a left corner kick and headed to score an open goal for Vietnam.

Vietnam faced difficulty in early minutes of the second half when Duc was sent off. The guests made full use of this advantage and created some dangerous situations at the hosts’ box but failed to equalise the score.

Substitute player Hoang Dinh Tung used one of his team’s counter attacks to kick the ball into the net.

The championship title is seen as a valuable present from the young players to the capital city on the occasion of its millennial birthday.
