Vietnam Entrepreneurs’ Day marked in Laos

Hanoi (VNA) – More than 200 delegates from nearly 100 Vietnamese businesses operating in Laos gathered at a function in Vientiane on Oct. 12 to celebrate the Vietnam Entrepreneurs’ Day (Oct. 13).

The event, co-hosted by the Embassy and the Trade Mission of Vietnam in Laos, saw the attendance of Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education To Huy Rua, who has been on a visit to Laos .

Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Huy Quang applauded the efforts of the Vietnamese businesses and community in Laos to expand investment ties with the neighbouring country, thereby strengthening the bilateral special relations.

Representatives of the business circle pledged to well carry out projects and agreements signed with Laos and to help Vietnam realise its plan to become the top investor in the country.-

Vietnam-Laos ICT business forum held in Laos

A Vietnam-Laos business forum on information communication technology (ICT) was held in Vientiane, Laos , on Oct. 7.

The Vietnamese Minister of Information and Telecommunications Le Doan Hop, the Lao Minister, Head of National Agency for Post and Telecommunication Khamlouat Sitlakone and the Vietnamese ambassador to Laos Nguyen Huy Quang attended the forum.

Vietnamese and Laotian postal and telecom officials and businesses exchanged views on postal, telecom and ICT development in the two countries, plus the operation of ICT businesses and their potential for cooperation by Vietnamese and Laotian businesses.

Major businesses from the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication (VNPT) Group, including the Vietnam Telecom International (VTI), Electricity of Vietnam telecom company (EVN), Vietnam Multimedia Corporation (VTC), the military telecom company Viettel, the joint stock telecom company FPT and the Vietnam Post and Telecom Institute, presented reports on their operations and the development of Vietnam’s ICT market as well as sharing their experiences in the fields of business management and supply of services.

The forum also discussed opportunities and potential for cooperation between Vietnamese and Lao businesses.

VNPT, the top post, telecom and ICT business in Vietnam and owner of VNASAT 1 satellite, expressed its readiness to support Lao telecom businesses in service supply and personnel training.

The two ministers also urged relevant management agencies and businesses of both countries to fully tap potential of each country through new cooperation programmes in order to boost Vietnam-Laos cooperation in post, telecommunication and ICT.-

Vietnam, Laos accelerate mapping project

Vientiane (VNA) – Vietnam and Laos have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the extension of the Vietnam-assisted mapping project for the 2010-2015 period.

Under the MoU, the two sides agreed to extend the project to survey and map the Lao territory.

Besides, the Vietnam Department of Survey and Mapping will help human resources development and equipment for the Lao National Mapping Department.

Vietnam will also send experts and organise training courses in the field for Lao officials.-

Awards spotlight businesses in VN, Laos and Cambodia

HA NOI — An awards programme for outstanding enterprises and businesses in Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam will be held in Ha Noi early next year.


The event is jointly organised by the Viet Nam Association for Small and Medium-sized Enterprise, the Ministry of Defence’s Economic Department and the Association for Economic Development of Viet Nam-Laos-Cambodia.


Prizes will be given to outstanding enterprises and business people who run their business effectively and have been active in social charity work.


“Prizes will also be given to enterprises and business people earning outstanding achievements and investing in economic development in the three countries,” said organisers.


Eligibility for the competition requires enterprises and business people to have actively contributed to the friendship between the three countries; earned high growth rates from high-quality products; have strong and attractive trade-marks as well as a good business culture while obeying laws and protecting the environment.


Judges for the competition will include representatives from relevant ministries, the embassies of Laos and Cambodia in Viet Nam and Vietnamese embassies in Laos and Cambodia.


Representative from friendship associations between the three countries will also be on the judging panel.


Applications can be submitted from now until November 30, 2008. —

TAQ2508.005 Japan extends emergency relief aid to Laos

Vientiane (VNA) – The Japanese government has decided to provide emergency relief package equivalent about 12 million yen (111,000 USD), to Laos, according to a press release of Japanese Embassy.

The relief package, including water purifiers, water tanks, blankets, tents and sleeping pads, was to respond to the Lao government’s appeal for assistance and cooperation in flood mitigation and emergency response effort, from a humanitarian viewpoint and in light of the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.

This aid was handed over to Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Lieutenant General Douangchay Phichit last week, the Lao news agency (KPL) reported Vientiane Capital and Khammouane and Bolikhamsay provinces, are suffering from serious problems including drinking-water shortage caused by the largest-ever flooding in the past weeks.

The Lao government has therefore asked for emergency relief assistance from the Japanese government, while making its utmost efforts to support those in need, according to the KPL. –

Laos pledges help to Vietnamese banks

HCM City (VNA) – The Bank of Laos will create the most favourable conditions for Sacombank and other Vietnamese commercial banks to expand their operation networks in Laos in the future, said its Deputy Governor Bounsong Sommalavong.

Deputy Governor Sommalavong, who is in Vietnam from August 18-22 to explore Vietnam’s banking and securities market activities, made the pledge during his working session with the Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Sacombank).

Earlier, the State Bank of Vietnam gave the nod to Sacombank to open its branch in Laos and Cambodia. The bank is striving to put its branch in Laos into operation by the end of this year.

The opening of Sacombank branch in Laos is expected to facilitate trade between the two countries.

Vietnam currently ranks fourth among foreign investors in Laos.-

VN, Laos and Cambodia join in promoting tourism

– Vietnamese, Lao and Cambodian tourism experts met in Central Highlands Gia Lai province on August 8, to find ways to promote tourism between the three countries.

Delegates called for governments to increase infrastructure investment for the tourism sector and encourage both local and foreign companies to invest in the three countries’ economic development triangle.

The triangle area includes Vietnam’s provinces of Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak and Dak Nong, Lao provinces of Atopu, Sekong, and Salavan, and Cambodian provinces of Stung Treng, Ratanakiri, and Mondunkiri.

At present, Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces of Vietnam arrange tours to Cambodian and Lao localities through the Bo Y border gate.-

Laos buys new aeroplane from American company

Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao Air has bought a new aeroplane worth 2.1 million USD from an American company to add to its fleet in response to the increasing demand of tourism, said local media.

The new aircraft, made by the Cessna Company of America from late 2007 to June 2008, arrived at Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport on June 27, Laos’ News Agency of KPL said.

This is the third plane Laos bought from the company.

The 14-seat aeroplane is designed to be suitable for the mountainous terrain in Laos. Its safety has been certified by the Civilian Aviation Organisation of America, the news agency added.-

Vietnamese-funded training centre launched in Laos

A Vietnamese-funded project to build a training centre for trade union officials under the Lao Federation of Trade Unions has been launched in Vientiane capital of Laos .

The 1,500 sq.m project, costing 12 billion VND and funded by the Vietnamese General Confederation of Labour, is expected to provide at-once accommodations for 200 trade union trainees.

The construction work which is scheduled for completion in March 2009 will be a symbol of the Vietnam-Laos special relations in general and the two countries’ trade union federations in particular.
