Mancini off to winning start as Chelsea stutter again

In Vietnam Sports on December 28, 2009 at 7:43 am

LONDON, Dec 26, 2009 (AFP) – Roberto Mancini’s reign as Manchester City manager began on a winning note on Saturday but it was another frustrating day for his fellow Italian Carlo Ancelotti as Premier League leaders Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham.

City’s first match since Mancini’s controversial replacement of Mark Hughes ended in a 2-0 win over Stoke that lifted the Abu Dhabi-backed club back to within three points of the top four place targeted by their new Italian manager.

It could hardly have gone any better for the former Inter Milan boss, who was warmly received by the fans before goals from Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov and Carlos Tevez had the points wrapped up by half-time.

“I’m very happy because we won a hard match,” Mancini said. “The players were fantastic. We have been working together for only five days and we must improve but it is a good start.”

Ancelotti meanwhile struggled to put a convincing positive spin on his side’s display after a draw that left Chelsea with just one win in seven matches in all competitions and extended Birmingham’s unbeaten run in the league to ten games.

“We had a lot of chances, showed very good heart and the goalkeeper for Birmingham made very good saves,” Ancelotti said. “We are disappointed with the result but not the performance.”

Birmingham goalkeeper Joe Hart certainly helped earn Alex McLeish’s side their point with a string of fine saves.

But Ancelotti will be concerned about his side’s lack of goals as he prepares for a month without strike duo Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, who will only be available for Monday’s match against Fulham before heading for the African Nations Cup in Angola.

The result of the stalemate at St Andrew’s is that Manchester United can cut Chelsea’s lead at the top back to two points by beating Hull at the KC Stadium on Sunday.

With Aston Villa’s meeting with Arsenal also scheduled for Sunday, Tottenham had the opportunity to move up to third place in the table.

But Harry Redknapp’s side could muster no more than a goalless draw from their cross-London trip to Fulham, for whom Clint Dempsey struck the bar with a first-half free-kick.

Liverpool moved back to within five points of a top four finish with a 2-0 win over struggling Wolves at Anfield.

It was a much-needed win for Rafael Benitez’s squad but a far from convincing one.

The decisive goals — a rare header from Steven Gerrard and a Yossi Benayoun strike — both came after Wolves had been reduced to ten men following a second yellow card for stand-in left-back Stephen Ward.

West Ham clawed themselves out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Portsmouth.

Gianfranco Zola’s side started the day just one point ahead of bottom side Pompey but goals from Alessandro Diamanti, who put the hosts ahead with a first half penalty, and Radoslav Kovac enabled the Hammers to boost their hopes of beating the drop.

David Nugent’s header earned Burnley a 1-1 draw in their Lancashire derby clash with Bolton, who had gone ahead through Matthew Taylor’s superb first-half free-kick.

Bolton remain in the bottom three while Burnley are three points clear of the drop zone.

A late equaliser by Marouane Fellaini enabled injured-plagued Everton to snatch a point at Sunderland, who had claimed a deserved first-half lead through a Darren Bent header that was the England striker’s 11th goal of the season.

Benni McCarthy’s first league goal of the season was cancelled out by Hugo Rodallega’s header as Wigan came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw in their Lancashire derby with fellow strugglers Bolton.

Aussies battle back, Robson gets winning Thai start

In Vietnam Sports on November 15, 2009 at 2:34 pm

SINGAPORE, Nov 14, 2009 (AFP) – Ten-man Australia battled back to beat Oman while former England captain Bryan Robson got his first win in a competitive match as Thailand coach on Saturday in crucial 2011 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Australia stayed top of Group B after seeing off Oman 2-1 in Muscat.

Khalifa Ayil Al-Naufli put the Omanis ahead in the 16th minute, but Luke Wilkshire levelled two minutes from half-time before Brett Emerton scored the winner seven minutes from the final whistle.

Australia have seven points from four matches, one in front of Kuwait who saw off Indonesia 2-1 and who have played a game less.

The two top teams in each group qualify for the finals in Qatar in 2011.

Oman, who meet five-time world champions Brazil in a prestige friendly on Tuesday, were awarded a penalty when Imad Al Hosni was fouled inside the area by Rhys Williams who was red-carded.

Al-Naufli had his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, but the striker was quickest to the rebound to score at the second attempt.

Australia levelled when Mark Bresciano set up Wilkshire. Fulham goalkeeper Schwarzer pulled off three fine saves in the second half before Australia grabbed a late winner with Emerton beating Ali Al Habsi in the Oman goal.

Thailand beat Singapore 3-1 to give Robson a winning competitive start as coach.

An 11th minute penalty by Sutee Suksomkit, who recently joined Australian A-League outfit Melbourne Victory, opened the scoring in a one-sided first half before Thardsak Chaiman made it 2-0 with 15 minutes left.

Sutee bagged his second soon after before Mustafic Fahrudin pulled one back for the home team from the penalty spot as the game wound down.

The victory moved Thailand into second place in Group E, two points behind Iran who edged Jordan 1-0 in Tehran.

“It’s great to win my first competitive game but my job is to qualify and I need to succeed in that and only then will I be happy,” said Robson.

Former Middlesbrough and West Brom manager Robson, who took over from Peter Reid in September, has instilled a cohesion in Thailand in the short time he has been there and they ran Singapore ragged.

Their movement was excellent and bodes well for the return leg in Bangkok on Wednesday, where Raddy Avramovic knows his side must win to keep alive any hopes they have of making their first Asian Cup.

Singapore have three points from three games.

Elsewhere, Uzbekistan proved too good for Malaysia in Tashkent, winning 3-1 with Asian player of the year Server Djeparov among those finding the target.

The Uzbekis have now won their opening two games in Group C, which only comprises three teams after India, who were drawn in the group, automatically qualified for the finals by winning the AFC Challenge Cup last year.

Malaysia have no points from two games while the UAE are second with three points.

In Hanoi, Vietnam conceded a goal in stoppage to crash 1-0 to Group D leaders Syria.

Vietnam desperately needed to pick up points with just two on the board from three games following a demoralising 6-1 defeat in China last time out.

China then saw off Lebanon 2-0 in Beirut with Yu Hai and Qu Bo on target.

The game was stopped for 10 minutes as Lebanese fans protested the second goal.

The Chinese are second in the group, three points behind Syria who have a perfect nine points from three matches.

Evacuations start for new Philippine storm

In World on October 2, 2009 at 6:41 am

Filipinos in the likely path of a looming typhoon began evacuating Friday, as the toll from a storm that tore across Southeast Asia days earlier rose to more than 400.

Officials fear Typhoon Parma — due to hit Saturday unless it changes course — will cause a second disaster in the northern Philippines after the worst flooding in four decades swamped the homes of more than 2 million people.

The storm that caused those floods, Ketsana, also ripped across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, killing at least 406 people — 293 in the Philippines, 99 in Vietnam and 14 in Cambodia.

Disaster officials said evacuations have begun in low-lying and mountainous villages in several provinces north and east of Manila, and officials were poised to relocate other communities in Parma’s path, once that became clearer Friday.

A woman washes clothes while standing in floodwaters brought on by Typhoon Ketsana, known locally as Ondoy, in San Pedro Laguna, south of Manila October 1, 2009

Refugees from Ketsana were asked to halt any plans to return home and stay in shelters.

Some 300,000 people have returned to their homes from shelters in schools and other places, though about 400,000 are still housed there, said Glenn Rabonza, executive officer of the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

Heavy rain fell on parts of the eastern coast Friday morning, as Parma swirled slowly northwest. It was about 170 miles (270 kilometers) off eastern Catanduanes province, the government’s weather bureau said.

Parma is packing sustained winds of up to 120 mph (195 kph) and gusts up to 140 mph (230 kph), the government’s weather bureau said. The bureau’s chief Nathaniel Cruz said this was enough to be very destructive.

The prospect of another storm was daunting for many flood survivors.

“We’ve been hit so hard. The situation now is just so difficult, and I don’t know if we can take another calamity,” said Glen Juban, whose 4-year-old daughter was swept away by floodwaters and drowned in Saturday’s deluge.

Vietnam’s government raised the country’s death toll from Ketsana by seven to 99 on Friday, and said it was distributing 10,000 tons of rice and $25 million in cash to victims in 14 central provinces. The Philippines raised its toll by 13.

The storm comes as the region struggles to recover from two major earthquakes. The death toll from Tuesday’s quake-triggered tsunami in the South Pacific rose to 160, while the toll from a powerful quake in Indonesia was more than 1,000 and climbing.

Typhoons occur year-round in the northeastern Pacific, usually blowing in from the east and tracking a path threatening Southeast Asia and southern China to Japan in the north. They are most common and usually most powerful from August to November.

Ketsana followed on the heels of Typhoon Morakot, which slammed into Taiwan in early August, causing mudslides and the worst flooding on the island in 50 years. Morakot also killed 22 people in the Philippines and eight in China.

Work to start on expressway linking HCMC to Southeast region

In Vietnam Society on September 30, 2009 at 4:22 pm

The construction of HCM City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway, linking the city to the Southeast region’s provinces, will start on October 3.

A junction of the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway and National Highway No.1

The 55-kilometre highway will start at Luong Dinh Cua Street in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, and end at National Highway No. 1 near the Dau Giay T-junction in neighboring Dong Nai Province.

The expressway is expected to be completed in 2014, with hopes that it will help reduce the amount of traffic passing through the Hanoi Highway which has become overloaded.

The road will also connect National Highway No.51 to the Long Thanh international airport, yet to be built, in Dong Nai Province.

When the upgrade of the National Highway No.51, which started in August, is completed, the connection between the HCM City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway and the National Highway No.51 will reduce the distance of 120 kilometers from HCM City to Ba Ria – Vung Tau to 90 kilometers.

It is also a great significance in the development of the coastal port system in Cai Mep-Thi Vai, the biggest port complex in the country, including Thu Duc and District 9 in HCMC and Dong Nai’s Nhon Trach District.

The construction of HCM City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay expressway includes two phases.
The first stage has four lanes and the second consists of eight lanes.

The highway includes Long Thanh Bridge with a width of 34 meters across the Dong Nai River.

The total capital of the first stage is VND9.89 trillion (US$550 million) and the second will cost VND18.88 trillion (nearly $1 billion).

Schools nationwide start new academic year

In Vietnam Education on September 8, 2009 at 5:20 pm

Most students nationwide have flocked to schools to start the new academic year on Saturday. Party and Government leaders attended new school year ceremonies throughout the country to share the joys with teachers and students on their first day back to school.

In Da Nang City, despite heavy rain, nearly 200,000 students and pupils showed up at the new academic year ceremonies for their schools.

To pave the way for a good academic year in the province, the Da Nang Department of Education and Training revealed that it had invested nearly VND177 billion to upgrade and build over 100 schools and recruit some 230 teachers for all levels.

Addressing a school ceremony at Le Quy Don High School for Gifted Students in Da Nang, the deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training, Nguyen Thien Nhan, encouraged the school management to build a ten-year training strategy for the students, of which, the first three years should focus on senior high school education, the five following years in tertiary and the remaining years as post-graduates.

He emphasized that such a strategy will be the best way to provide a sufficient number of highly skilled workers for Da Nang in particular and for the entire country in general.

The deputy PM later attended another school ceremony at the boarding High School for Ethnic Students of Gia Lai Province.

Mr. Nhan lauded the significant achievements that the school had made over the past few years and commended the solidarity of students of different ethnic groups studying together under the same roof.

The deputy PM presented the school and students with two computers and 300 uniforms and 100 TV sets to the teachers.

In HCM City, the City’s Party Secretary, Le Thanh Hai, attended the new school year ceremony at Le Hong Phong High School for Gifted Students.

He applauded the achievements of the school’s last academic year, with 383 students attaining the title “City’s Excellent Students,” 34 of them receiving “Country’s Excellent Students” and 95 percent of students passing university entrance exams.

Mr. Hai stressed that among strategies to build and develop the country, those that train talents are very important as they are decisive factors for the country’s industrialization and modernization.

Mr. Hai said that he is looking forward to more good news related to the school’s achievements in the new academic year, and encouraged students to focus on studying and dignity so that they can become useful citizens to society in the future.

He also appealed to the school management and students’ families to join hands together to protect children from being affected by social problems.

The chairman of the city’s People’s Committee, Le Hoang Quan, was present at Nguyen Hien School’s ceremony, which is the only high school in the city recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training as a ‘standard school’ for the whole country for the period 2000-2010.

The school has also received certificate of recommendation from the Government for its great achievements in training and education.

Sharing the joys with the school’s management and students on the day, Mr. Quan encouraged the school’s management to maintain what they have achieved over the past years in training high-quality students who meet the country’s demand for talents.

But not all students could start their new school year like their peers.

Schools in the city of Hue, Thua Thien Province, and in Hai Lang District, Quang Tri Province, had to put off new school year ceremonies due to poor weather and the danger of floods.

The students are expected to start the school year on September 9, when the weather is expected to improve.

In Lam Dong Province, seven schools could not start the new academic year because some students are suspected of being infected with swine flue. At present, Lam Dong has some 95 students, from 28 schools, who have tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus.
