SeABank to open more transaction offices in October

Hanoi (VNA) – The Southeast Asia Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SeABank) has revealed that it will open 13 new transaction offices nationwide in October.

Among the planned offices, five will be inaugurated in Ho Chi Minh City , four in Hanoi and the remaining in Hai Duong, Khanh Hoa, Ba Ria – Vung Tau and Ca Mau provinces.

According to SeABank, the andeavour will bring its total nationwide to 85 transaction offices by the end of 2008. –

First int’l cruise ship launches service in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – Panama ’s Jupiter Cruises firm has launched sea travel service in Vietnam , becoming the first foreign firm to provide cruise service for tourists in the coastal country.

Its four-star ship, Jupiter, which is 175 meters long and 22 meters wide, offers restaurants, a health spa, karaoke rooms, a dance hall and entertainment area. It is capable of carrying 1,200 people.

The cruise ship will take travelers to tourist sports along Vietnam ’s coastline, including Hai Phong, Da Nang , Nha Trang, HCM City , Vung Tau, Con Dao and Phu Quoc.

Sam Lam. Chairman of the Executive Council of Jupiter Cruises Ship, said that Jupiter wants to provide good tour service by sea at reasonable prices to be come the first choice of every Vietnamese and Asian tourists.
Many foreign cruise companies expect to develop this luxury tourist service in Vietnam as the country is seeing strong development of tourism.

Vietnam has more than 3,260 km of coast with many attractive bays and beaches and famous world heritage sites like Ha Long Bay and Nha Trang Bay , thousands of islands and a system of major sea ports.
Vietnam has been emerging as an attractive destination to foreign shipping firms and travelers by sea.-

Investment promotion yielding positive results

HCM City (VNA) – Investment promotion activities have achieved encouraging results in advertising the investment environment in Vietnam as a safe and attractive destination that offers high competitiveness to foreign investors, said Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung.

The Deputy Minister made the remark at a conference held on Oct. 10 in Ho Chi Minh City to review investment promotion work in the southern region.

Over the recent past, ministries, services and localities have organised a range of activities to encourage investment in Vietnam , markedly contributing to the attraction and effective use of foreign direct investment.

As a result, the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into Vietnam has increased sharply. The country attracted 18.5 billion USD in FDI in the 2001-05 period, more than 12 billion USD in 2006 and the figure surpassed 20 billion USD in 2007. During the first nine months of this year, the country attracted a record FDI total of more than 57 billion USD.

The conference discussed measures to overcome obstacles to increasing the effectiveness of investment promotion work.

Participants pointed to the lack of cooperation between localities and ministries and branches, the limited knowledge of the investment market and potential partners, and the shortage of officials to take charge of investment promotion activities.

They proposed a number of measures such as building detailed plans for each sector and regional as well as a list of projects calling for investment to facilitate investors. They also urged the completion of legal documents and policies regarding investment promotion and the development of a system providing detailed information for investors.-

Foreign banks licensed for expansion in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – The State Bank of Vietnam (SVB)’s Governor has granted licences to foreign banks to set up banks, increase funds to their branches and open representative offices in Vietnam as part of the country’s commitments to international economic integration.

The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) has become the third wholly foreign owned bank in Vietnam under a licence signed by the SVB’s Governor on Oct. 9.

The licence permits ANZ Bank ( Vietnam ) to operate over a period of 99 years with a charter capital of 1 trillion VND.

Earlier, the SBV licensed two of the UK ’s banking giants, HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank.

On Oct. 8, SVB allowed the US bank, JPMorgan Chase N.A. to increase its branch capital in Ho Chi Minh City from 17 million USD to 27 million USD.

Previously, the Malaysia-based RHB Bank Berhad was granted a licence to open its representative office in Ho Chi Minh City with an initial operating period of five years.-

Project to study Dao ethnic minority along border

Lao Cai (VNA) – Vietnam ’s northern Lao Cai province and Qinzhou city of China ’s Guangxi province will jointly conduct a study on economic development and cultural-social changes of the Dao ethnic minority living along their common border.

An agreement on the project was signed recently by Director of the Lao Cai Department for Culture, Sports and Tourism Dr. Tran Huu Son, Dr. Be Van Hau from the Vietnam Institute of Sociology, and Prof. Yu Shijie from the Guangxi University for Nationalities.

The study will focus on impacts of trans-national tourism on economic development and traditional cultural preservation of the Dao ethnic minority group.

In addition, the project will also gather, study and classify antiquarian books of the targeted people.

The two sides agreed to equally send five experts to implement the project and hold seminars following each stage of study for review.-

New library to mark 1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi

Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism inaugurated the Hanoi Library at 47 Ba Trieu Street on October 10, the first of a series of public works to mark the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

Following an open-plan design, the modern, fully-equipped eight-storey library includes book showrooms, a reading room for the visually-impaired, meeting halls, and a multi-functional space.

The construction of the work commenced in 2005 with the aim of building a modern library, with increased storage areas and many reading rooms, meeting the increasing demands of the capital’s residents for access to a range of information.-

Vietnam, Bulgaria increase radio broadcasting cooperation

Hanoi (VNA) – The Bulgarian Radio Station and the Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) will expand their cooperation in the exchange of information and work together to boost their bilateral relations and friendship.

A memorandum of understanding, which is valid for 3 years was signed between the two agencies’ general directors in Hanoi on Oct. 10.

The agreement includes a range of new contents; such as mutual pledge to ensure there is no copyright infringement in exchanging their music programmes, the establishment of links between their websites and cooperation to produce joint programmes.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two sides will also help each other address technical problems and train broadcast professionals through the hosting of seminars, using their respective experiences to advise one another and a variety of other methods.-

Int’l real estate federation summit kicks off in HCM City

HCM City (VNA) – The seventh summit of the International Real Estate Federation, Asia-Pacific Region kicked off in Ho Chi Minh City on Oct. 10 with the participation of 70 groups, investment funds and 400 real estate companies.

High on the agenda are the construction of low-price houses, the establishment of a real estate credit fund, the mobilisation of capital for housing development projects and investment in offices for lease across the Asia-Pacific region.

On the first day of the event, the participants heard about Vietnam ’s real estate market, investment opportunities and procedures to implement real estate projects in the southern region.-

Dak Lak succeeds in battle against leprosy

Dak Lak (VNA) – The Central Highlands province of Dac Lac has provided medical check-ups for close to 3 million people since 1994 and successfully treated 28,000 leprosy patients in the locality.

A report publicised by the provincial Health Department on October 10 showed that the rate of leprosy patients among local residents is now 0.02 per 10,000 people, compared with 10 per 10,000 in 1994 when the province’s leprosy prevention programme commenced.

To achieve these results, Dak Lak province carried out leprosy awareness programmes at schools and established a network of 17 clinics to serve local residents.

In recognition of its tireless work in the battle against leprosy, the State President presented the Labour Order third class, to the Dak Lak Centre for Dermatology for its outstanding achievements in wiping out the disease over recent years.-

Vietnamese embassy presents gifts to Cambodian high school

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese ambassador to Cambodia presented 11 sets of computers and printers to the teachers and students of Chea Sim Boeung Keng Kang high school in Phnom Penh on Oct. 10.

Vice president of Cambodia ’s Senate Tep Ngorn and Phnom Penh ’s deputy mayor Chuop Khon, plus all of the school’s teachers and students attended the event.

Addressing the ceremony, the Vietnamese diplomat said the gift expresses his country’s concern for the training and development of Cambodia ’s youth.-
