QĐND – Thursday, October 15, 2009, 20:14 (GMT+7)

Cambodia is expected to export 1,000 tonnes of cotton to Vietnam by the end of this year, said executive in the industry.

Kong Chan, Managing Director of Cambodia’s Seladamex Co., Ltd, said his company is working with its Vietnamese partners to seek a consensus for the trading and if successful, this will be Cambodia’s largest contract to export cotton since 1970, marking a milestone for the development of the cotton industry in Cambodia.

Cotton-growing areas have been narrowed in Cambodia since 1979 due to low selling price and difficulties in finding markets.

According to statistics released by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Cambodia, trade between Vietnam and Cambodia had by the end of August reached 848 million USD, down 29.2 percent from a year ago. Of which, 726 million USD were Vietnam’s exports to Cambodia.

Cambodian economists said that despite the downturn this year, two-way trade is expected to increase strongly by 2010 to reach 2 billion USD as Cambodia’s economy will rebound next year.

State Bank steps in on rice buy-up

QĐND – Thursday, October 15, 2009, 20:14 (GMT+7)

The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) on Oct. 13 instructed commercial banks to provide loans to the Southern Food Corporation in a move to aid the corporation in buying 500,000 tonnes of rice harvested from the 2009 summer-autumn crop for stockpile.

Under Official Letter 8042/NHNN-TD, the corporation will receive the interest-free loan, with the SBV paying all the interest rates. The loan will enjoy the lowest lending interest rates currently being applied by commercial banks.

The lending and disbursement will last until November 20 this year while the deadline for enjoying the interest-free loans is January 20 next year.

The move was made in the wake of a Prime Ministerial instruction last month that required the Southern Food Corporation to buy rice for stock-pilling to stabilise the domestic rice price.

The company will buy rice at prices which will allow local growers to make profits of at least 30 percent.

Earlier, the Vietnam Food Association also asked its members to buy 500,000 tonnes of rice in September at 3,800 VND (21 US cent) per kilogramme to stabilise prices.
Once the Southern Food Corporation’s purchase is completed, the country will raise its total summer-autumn rice stockpile to nearly 1.5 million tonnes of rice.

Health Ministry plans to vaccinate against H1N1 flu

QĐND – Thursday, October 15, 2009, 20:14 (GMT+7)

Now that Vietnam has a formula to vaccinate against H1N1 flu for various ages, except patients with chronic diseases, the Health Ministry is developing a H1N1 flu vaccination plan.

The Head of the Health Ministry’s Department for Preventive Health and Environment Nguyen Huy Nga released this information at a regular meeting of the National Steering Board for Flu Prevention in Humans in Hanoi on October 14.

The Ministry affirmed that there is no shortage of medicine to treat H1N1, the volume of Tamiflu is still large (over 354,000 tablets) and more are being produced.

As winter approaches, conditions will provide the life-threatening flu more opportunities to develop. The Health Ministry recommends that people diligently follow precautionary measures to control the disease to protect themselves and the community.

At present, 59 out of 63 cities and provinces in Vietnam have A/H1N1 patients.

Vietnam confirmed 76 more cases positive for the super-flu on October 14, raising the total number in the country to 10,124 with 23 deaths. Of the total, 9,437 patients have been released from hospital after treatment. The remainders are in quarantine for treatment. All are in stable condition.

Korea Life gifts 1.000 free health check vouchers

QĐND – Thursday, October 15, 2009, 20:14 (GMT+7)

PANO – On the occasion of the Vietnamese Women’s Day, Korea Life Insurance Company Limited (Vietnam), or better known as Korea Life, will cooperate with An Sinh Hospital (HCMC) and Tri Duc Hospital (Ha Noi) to organize a free health screening program for women during the period from 18/10 to 27/10/2009.

With its motto “thousands of joy, ten thousands of happiness”, this program is specifically designed for women aged 25 or above, married, and living in Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi. In order to register for this program, you only need to fill in some basic personal information at website during the period from 12/10 to 27/10/2009.

1,000 early birds will be given free health screening vouchers for the following services: gynecology, ultrasound of the belly, uterus and related organs, cervical cancer detection test (Pap smear), and medical consultation. They are also given 20% discount on any other health screening and medical test services.

All the late comers will be given health screening discount vouchers with 20% off on all health screening and medical test services at An Sinh Hospital and Tri Duc Hospital. Especially, there is no limit on the number of such discount vouchers.

Mr. Jung Seop Hyun, General Director of Korea Life Vietnam said “As a leading life insurance company in South Korea, we wish to join hands with Vietnamese people to nurture dreams of a brighter future. Improved quality of life includes not only better living standards but also other factors, such as health status. Vietnamese people often say “health is gold”, but few of them have regular health check-ups. Instead, most people only see a doctor when they have seen symptoms of illnesses. This habit does not only make it difficult for the medical treatment but also increases treatment costs and affects negatively on the patients’ financial conditions. By giving the free health screening vouchers to women, we expect that we will help thousands of wives and mothers to rest assured that they are completely healthy, or otherwise to be treated before it is too late. Therefore, we believe this is yet another worthwhile effort of Korea Life in community support.”
