International airlines to promote HCM City

Eight international airlines are promoting HCM City’s most popular tourist destination on flights to the southern hub.

The city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the carriers, including Air France, United Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, have signed an agreement to show a 3.5-minute video promoting HCM City’s 100 Exciting Places and Activities on the flights.

The campaign will last through at least the end of this year.

The city announced in February its list of 100 recommendations, including top hotels, restaurants, favorite foods, city tours and events. The top 100 was voted on by tourists and experts over a three-month period.

Vietnam-based low-cost airline VietJet AirAsia would make its first commercial flight in August, said AirAsia general director Tony Fernandes on April 8.

Fernandes was at a signing ceremony for the strategic partnership agreement between Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia and local VietJet Aviation, held in Hanoi.

The ceremony was witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, as well as representatives of the two countries’ ministries.

AirAsia has bought a 30 percent stake in VietJet Aviation to establish the new carrier.

Fernandes said the two governments had supported the operation of VietJet AirAsia. He said the carrier would help increase tourism to both countries and enhance the nations’ relationship and promote the integration process in ASEAN.

The agreement would strengthen co-operation between Vietnam and Malaysia towards common targets of the region’s economic development, he said.

VietJet Air general director Nguyen Duc Tam said advantage would be taken of AirAsia’s technology and experience to ensure quality and safety.

Fernandes also said there would be no competition between Vietnam Airlines and VietJet AirAsia as their market segments were different.

The carrier would operate both domestic and international flights, he said.
VietJet Air main shareholders were Sovico Group, T$C Group and the Housing Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank.

The first privately owned Vietnamese airline, it was launched in 2007 with an initial investment capital of VND 600 billion (37.5 million USD).

AirAsia in the biggest budget carrier in Asia with a wide network of flight routes in ASEAN. With its associated budget carrier, Asia X, AirAsia flies to destinations in mainland China, Taiwan, Australia and the UK. To date, the two carriers have carried over 85 million of passengers with 90 aircraft.

Nearly 200 diplomats and representatives from international organisations in Vietnam will attend a charity golf tournament for Vietnamese children at Hanoi’s Van Tri golf course on April 24.

The “Swing for the Kids” tournament sponsored by the Dau tu (Investment Review) newspaper encourages kind-hearted donors to help disadvantaged children across the country.

Over the past three years, the golf tournament has raised nearly 2 billion VND (105,000 USD) in support of disadvantaged children. The funds have been used to provide students with scholarships valued at 10 million VND (500 USD) each.

The Vietnamese high-quality and exported goods fair 2010 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia closed on April 7th.

According to the organising board, during the 5 days, the fair drew some 350,000 local people and the total sales reached US$ 3.3 million, up by 6 per cent against last year.

The organising board also said that more than 60 per cent of Vietnamese businesses have so far set up their distributors or/and retail agents in Cambodia.

Yet, Vietnamese Commercial Counselor to Cambodia, Le Bien Cuong said that there should be 4 major solutions for Vietnamese goods to further enter the local market: favorable tax policies and platforms, good logistics systems (stores, ports, support services…), more professional distribution networks and more effective and regular trade promotion and marketing programs.

Strategic socio-economic development directions and master plans for Hanoi toward 2030 were outlined during the 9th Session of the Hanoi Party Committee on April 7th.

Particularly, the City set a high annual growth rate of 9-10 per cent in the period of 2011-2020 and 7.5-8.5 per cent in the period of 2021-2030, while per capita GDP will reach US$ 5,300 by 2020 and US$ 12,000 by 2030 against US$ 1,700 in 2008.

To achieve the fruits, the city will need US$ 60 billion during 2011-2015 and US$ 97-98 billion during 2016-2020.

This was viewed as a huge capital amount, but the City People’s Committee was determined to mobilise a majority of that amount from domestic sources.

In addition, 5 satellite towns around Hanoi, namely Son Tay, Hoa Lac, Xuan Mai, Phu Xuyen and Soc Son will be established.

City’s officials also agreed to give priority to develop Hanoi into a modern and civilised city and make a leap-frog in local people’s incomes.

Second CEO pursues private aircraft deal

The CEO of Hoa Phat Corporation, Tran Dinh Long, has confirmed that he is negotiating to buy a private aircraft.

He said that the two sides are negotiating and no news could be revealed during this process.

It is said that the aircraft will be bought from his own money.

An official from the Vietnam Aviation Department revealed that the agency had received the information about the trade and guides about procedure had been given.

He said that there were no restrictions for a Vietnamese citizen to own a private aircraft; however, all documents related to lifetime of aircraft or aircraft type, which is new in Vietnam, are required for licensing. 

If the business is successful, Long will become the second person in Vietnam to own a private aircraft, after Doan Nguyen Duc, CEO of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group.

Nearly 200 young volunteers from 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong River Delta cooperated with soldiers to carry out many meaningful activities on Tho Chu Island, Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang province during the first days of April.

These young volunteers presented newspapers, computers, televisions and karaoke kits to army units on the island.

Officers and soldiers of the units and these volunteers took part in collecting rubbish in an effort to clean beaches.

Particularly, they raised 130 million VND to build a sports complex, presented 9 gifts (each worth 300,000 VND) to families who had rendered good service to the nation and 260 other gifts (each worth 90,000 VND) to local pupils.

An interesting art exchange between these volunteers, soldiers and local people also took place on this occasion.

Mr. Tran Viet Truong, a Youth Union activist of Can Tho province said these good deeds help young people think of the soldiers and people who are defending the off-shore territory of the country.

This 16 square kilometer island is about 200 kms away the mainland with the population of 1,713 people who live mainly on fishing. The soldiers have been working hard together with local residents to make Tho Chu Island more developed and prosperous.

Voluntary blood donation day opened in Phu Yen

PANO – A ceremony to open the Voluntary Blood Donation Day was held by the Phu Yen Provincial Red Cross in the Cultural and Labour House on April 7th.

The event, which aimed to mobilize local people to donate blood, echoed the national voluntary blood donation campaign.

The Phu Yen Blood Donation Steering Board set a target to hold over 40 voluntary blood donation courses and collect some 5,000 blood units during 2010-2011.

At the ceremony, the Phu Yen People’s Committee granted certificates of merit to local organisations for their active participation in the 2009-2010 blood donation campaign.

Right after the ceremony, nearly 400 officers, students and members of the Youth Union took part in the movement, and 340 blood units were collected on the first day.

Green Live Day to teach kids about conservation

Green Live Day will take place this Sunday and is expected to draw around 5,000 young people to get involved in environmental protection activities in HCM City.

They will experience environmentally friendly life in a green areas including a green space, a school, a house and a playground.

The event will be held by Go Green Club under the Go Green programme jointly organised by Toyota Vietnam, the National Environment Agency, and the Ministry of Education and Training.

This will also be a chance for enterprises to display their environmentally friendly products. The day will be highlighted with a community action for needy people, according to the organiser. Secondhand clothes will be renewed with environmentally friendly technology and offered to disadvantaged children.

The day intends to raise public awareness about protecting the Vietnamese environment and to help young people develop an overall view about environmental pollution and prompt behavioural change to make a greener country.
