“Blue ear” disease in pigs has been reported in 12 northern provinces and cities and threatened other southern and central provinces, said Department of Animal Health, part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, on Thursday.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) also known as ‘Blue Ear”disease has seen around 37,000 infected pigs with 14,860 killed and destroyed.

The disease is spreading fast because knights of the cleaver have transported pigs from provinces to provinces.

Moreover, breeders have tried to sell their pigs at cheap prices for fear that their pigs will contract the disease they may lose heavily, causing spread of the virus in the central and southern provinces.

Ho Chi Minh City residents are careful to choose pork for their meals since the news of the disease on pigs has been reported. However, Phan Xuan Thao, chief of the city’s Department of Animal Health, said his men did not detect diseased pigs in the city.

The department and Department of Market Management enhance supervision at slaughter houses and conducte tests all the time, he added.
