Friendship – a precious asset

QĐND – Tuesday, May 18, 2010, 7:55 (GMT+7)

State President Nguyen Minh Triet paid an official visit to Belarus from May 12-15. In the current economic climate both countries have good reason to strengthen their economic ties and increase bilateral trade value.

The population of Begoml, a town in Vichev province, more than 100km from the capital Minsk, was eager to welcome the Vietnamese delegation. They invited their hounoured guests to bread and salt, a Belarusian custom. On receiving President Triet, Mr and Mrs Grishanov enthusiastically talked about memories of Vietnam’s victory 35 years ago, about Hanoi, and Ha Long Bay.

“I am moved to tears to receive the Vietnamese president, said Mrsgrishnov. “Vietnam is in my heart. I hope that the visit will bring both countries closer, together for the benefit of their people.”

Vietnam’s great victory was attributed to the former Soviet Union, which included Belarus. After the war, Vietnam faced a number of difficulties during its economic development process and received significant support from its traditional friend. Many Vietnamese people still remember MAZ trucks or Minsk motorbikes.

Mr Triet told President Alexander Lukashenko and other Belarusian leaders that their support is unwavering and the Vietnamese people will never forget. Both parties agreed that their friendship provides a firm foundation for steeping up co-operation in the future and turning their friendship into economic strength.

President Lukashenko and Prime Minister Sidorsky reaffirmed that they will work with Vietnam to expand co-operation in engineering, producing and assembling trucks, agricultural machinery and fertilizer. These are Belarus’ strengths.

Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Kobyakov emphasised that Belarus has closely followed Vietnam’s development in recent years. Belarus is a developed country in the Commonwealth of Independent States (SNG), and is keen to boost bilateral co-operation with Vietnam. Bilateral trade value has increased despite the impact of the global economic crisis. Belarus will help increase the volume of MAZ trucks assembled in Vietnam and will supply tyres and hydraulic equipment to Vietnam. Both countries will also step up co-operation in agriculture.

Mr Triet and Mr Lukashenko signed a joint statement on their policy of strengthening ties between the two countries, to mutually recognise each other’s market economy status and consider the possibility of liberalising trade between the two countries.

Vietnam supports Belarus desire to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO). On this basis, both parties expressed their willingness to continue facilitating long-term cooperation for the sake of both the Vietnamese and Belarusian peoples.

Mr Triet said that Belarus is a close and trusted friend of Vietnam. “Vietnam is expanding its co-operative ties with all countries, especially its traditional friends or those facing difficulties. Now we are turning the revolutionary spirit into the strength necessary to boost economic co-operation. I hope that Belarus will share its development experiences with Vietnam.”
