Viet Nam set for Asian tourney

QĐND – Friday, June 04, 2010, 21:19 (GMT+7)

The national team will compete at the Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship on June 5-13 in Zhenjiang, China, announced the Viet Nam Volleyball Federation.

Viet Nam have been drawn in pool A along with strong hosts China, Japan, defending Southeast Asian (SEA) Games champions Indonesia and Kazakhstan.

The event will bring together a total of 11 Asian teams who will compete in a round robin, with the first and second placed teams competing in the semi-finals.

Although the national team has just convened at the Ha Noi-based National Sports Centre, they are in good physical condition and looking sharp, according to the team’s head coach Phung Cong Hung.

Key players such as Van Kieu, Xuan Thanh, Duy Quang, Van Duc and Van Tuan have good fitness. They competed at the SEA Games in Laos and played well at the recent Grand Prix-Alatca Cup in Phu Tho Province.

“This time we’ve got some new faces including Hoang Van Phuong, Nguyen Truong Giang, Luu Dinh Toan who are highly-rated by the selection board. They are highly disciplined and putting in a lot of effort during training. I think this will be a good opportunity for them to accumulate experience,” Hung said.

Viet Nam are scheduled to play Kazakhstan in their opening match this Sunday, with clashes with Indonesia, China and Japan, respectively to follow.

The tournament champion will proceed to the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) Men’s Club World Volleyball Championship which will be held in Doha, Qatar.

On the women’s side, defending champion Binh Dien Long An will participate in the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship from June 26 to July 4 in Gresik City of Surabaya of Indonesia to vie for the only place at the FIVB Women’s Club World Volleyball Championship in Qatar along with nine other teams.

Viet Nam will play in pool B with defending champions Thailand, silver medallist China, South Korea, and Kazakhstan. While Indonesia, Japan, Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Iran will be in pool A.

According to Asian Volleyball Confederation’s rule, teams will be allowed to feature foreign players in the tournament.

Last year, under the leadership of coach Tran Van Thu, Viet Nam won two and lost five, finishing sixth.

Qatar will host this year’s double gender event for the first time in 18 years and will feature alternate men and women’s matches in the same venue on the same day during December 14-21.
