QĐND – Wednesday, July 28, 2010, 21:24 (GMT+7)

Four Vietnamese students have won two silver and two bronze medals at the 42 nd International Chemistry Olympiad (ICHO), held in Japan’s capital city of Tokyo from July 19-28.

The two silver medals went to Nguyen Duc Binh from Thanh Hoa province and Luu Nguyen Hong Quang while the bronzes were awarded to Mai Thu Cuc from Hai Duong province and Le Anh Tuan from Hai Phong city, whose performances resulted in Vietnam, France and Poland tying for 24th place out of the 68 countries and territories taking part.

Do Quy Son, a Doctor of Chemistry and Vietnam’s team leader said that although they did not win any gold, as in previous contests, all the students won a medal, which is an encouraging result.

Son added that for the past five years, the Vietnamese team has always taken gold medals home with them but recently, other countries are becoming increasingly well-prepared and the competition is fiercely competitive.

China won with four gold medals, followed by Thailand and the Republic of Korea with three gold and one silver, respectively. Hosts Japan came 4th along with Singapore, the CzechRepublic, the US, Taiwan and Hungary.

The 43rd ICHO will be held in Turkey in 2011 and Vietnam plans to host the contest in 2014.
