Coal and mineral industry fetches VND70,000 billion in 2010 revenue

The Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Group (VINACOMIN) earned nearly VND70,000 billion in 2010 revenue, 11 percent more than in 2009, in which coal exports reached VND21,000 billion, up by 21 percent over 2009.

On January 8, VINACOMIN organised a conference to review business and production activities in 2010 and worked out the 2011 plan.

Despite facing a lot of difficulties due to the impact of the global economic crisis, VINACOMIN still perform well, carrying out its business plans. As a result, in 2011, VINACOMIN contributed more than VND8,000 billion to the State budget, 25 percent more than in 2009 while its mineral exploration hit VND2,500 billion, up by 31 percent; electricity production reached VND2,300 billion, up by 131 percent over 2009.

Asides from this, the group restructured its enterprises and production management while implementing key projects on mining, thermal-electric power and exploring new coal mines.

Last year, VINANCOMIN ensured job provision and stable incomes for more than 1.3 million workers with a monthly average salary of VND6 million each, 5 percent more than the level of the year before.

In 2011, the group will continue to implement measures to gain more than VND72,000 billion in revenue, apply advanced technology to increase production efficiency and reduce workplace accidents.

The group will also ensure social welfare for workers as well as adopt measures for sustainable environmental protection in its exploration process.

8,000 Vietnamese laborers worked in Korea in 2010

In 2010, Vietnam sent more than 8,000 laborers to work in Korea under the EPS program. This is an increase of 1.7 times, as compared with 2009, said Phan Van Minh, director of Overseas Workers centre.

Vietnamese young people are now able to find high-income jobs while working abroad. South Korea has become an attractive destination for many rural laborers, as it has a stable working environment and preferential policies.

In addition, 66,000 laborers registered to join the Korean language program and 29,400 candidates passed the examinations.

Under the EPS program, foreign workers are allowed to change jobs up to three times, within a three-year period. The workers also enjoy basic salary entitlements that are permitted under South Korean law. They are also protected by work related insurance policies, and salary and repatriation expenditure insurance. Finally, when their contracts finish, they may be re-employed by other Korean businesses.

To work in South Korea, workers must pass a Korean language test and meet specific criteria’s. Individuals, who can apply for the EPS program, are those who have just finished military service, students from vocational secondary schools and workers.

Vietnam ICT Awards 2010

The Ministry of Information and Communications announced regulations on Vietnam Information, Communication and Technology Awards (VICTA 2010) in Hanoi on January 6.  

Thirty-two awards will be presented to six main sectors of information and technology (IT), including telecommunications, IT industry, IT human resources training, IT application, digital information security, and also to foreign businesses for their active contribution to the development of Vietnam’s ICT and to those domestic ones for the benefit of community development.

This year’s awards will honour new businesses credited with high growth rates and good services. Two awards will be given for the first time to those providing best security services and solutions.

There are also prizes for units of ministries and departments which have best applied IT in their work.

VICTA 2010 is focused on the quality, growth and effective operation of businesses involved in mobile telecommunications, Internet, software and digital information sources.  

The deadline for businesses and units send in their dossiers is March 6.

Uyen Linh crowned Vietnam Idol 2010

Miss Tran Nguyen Uyen Linh of Ho Chi Minh City won the Vietnam Idol 2010 contest on December 25.

22 year old Linh, a recent graduate of the Vietnam Academy of Diplomacy in Hanoi, beat Van Mai Huong to the title and won the prize of US$20,000 and a year-long record contract.

On the final day of Vietnam Idol, Linh sang Giac Mo Nao Cua Toi (dreams of mine), composed by Bao Chan and also sang a duet with singer My Linh (I believe I can fly).

Last week, she sang “Sao Anh Chang Ve” (Why You Don’t Return) composed by Vietnam Idol judge, Quoc Trung. She entertained viewers with a wonderful improvisation of the melody and lyrics.

For the final song on the final night of Vietnam Idol, she performed Cam On Tinh Yeu (Grateful for Love). Linh modulated her voice rendering an emotional version that moved judges and audiences alike.

Runner up Huong from Hanoi, though only 17 was a good competitor and consistently wowed audiences and judges with a great and powerful voice. She bowled over audiences with her impersonation of Katy Perry when she appeared in a black wig and rimmed glasses to sing Hot and Cold. However she was unable to match Linh in the finals.

Judge Diem Quynh believed this young student from the Military Culture and Arts College had a great talent and could have a long career ahead of her. The two contestants beat 25,000 competitors to make it to the finals at the Lan Anh Theatre.

Vietnam Idol is based on the British television hit show Pop Idol and is produced by Ho Chi Minh City Television and Vietnam Advertising Company. In its first season in 2007, Phuong Vy was the winner.

Mister Vietnam 2010 contest this weekend

Mister Vietnam 2010 contest will announce their winner at the Vung Tau Sporting Hall on January 1, 2011.

The contest which began in November is now on its final round. It is the first beauty contest for men in the country and besides the main title their will be other titles given such as Mister Environment to Le Kien Dinh; Mister Sport to Nguyen Nhat Duy; Mister Talent to Pham Thanh, Mister Gentleman to Vu Duy Hung and Mister Intelligence Do Ba Dat.

The judges include historian Duong Trung Quoc, PhD, Tham Hoang Diep, Singer Jimmii Nguyen, actress Truong Ngoc Anh, model Pham Thanh Hang, photographer Quoc Huy, fashion designers Nguyen Cong Tri and Do Manh Cuong.

Ngo Tien Doan, a representative of the organizing committee and a former Mister International 2008 said the pageant aims to honor beauty of the physical body and the spirit and knowledge of Vietnamese men. The essential qualities needed to win this contest are confidence, style, elegance and intelligence.
The winner will not only receive a cash prize of VND750 million (US$37,500) but will represent Vietnam at the Mister International 2011 pageant in the Philippines.

Mister International 2010 Tyan Terry has already arrived in Vietnam to take part in the event.

The contest is jointly hosted by the Vietnam Television VTV9 and the Bac Dau Entertainment Company and sponsored by Nha Be Garment Company. Its final night will be broadcast live on VTV9, VTV4, and RTV channels.

Mekong Delta man crowned Mister Vietnam 2010

Le Khoi Nguyen, 20, from Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, was crowned Mister Vietnam 2010 after beating 30 other contestants on January 1.

He kept the crown worth VND750 million (US$37,500).

He will present Vietnam at Mister International 2011 competition to be held in the Philippines.

Do Ba Bat, 24, and Ha Trong Tai, 21, were named first and second runners up. They were awarded VND50 million ($2,500) and VND30 million ($1,500), respectively.

During the final round of the contest, which started from November 17, Nguyen Nhat Duy won the title “Mister Sport”, while Pham Thanh took “Mister Talent” and Vu Duy Hung, “Mister Gentleman.

The judges also presented “Mister Knowledge” to Do Ba Dat, “Mister Environment” and Mister Favourite” to Le Kien Dinh.

Each of the winner got VND10 million ($500) prize.

The competition was held for the first time in Vietnam by Vietnam Television VTV9 and the Bac Dau Entertainment Company.

New TV Singing Contest 2010

Minh Chuyen of Ha Nam Province on January 2 won the first prize at the Sao Mai Diem Hen (Music Star Rendezvous) music contest 2010.  The contest is organises by Viet Nam Television in order to discover future pop stars.

The event took place at Maximax Sport Hall in Ho Chi Minh City.

Luong Viet Quang, from Ho Chi Minh City, took home the ‘Most Favourite Singer’ award, chosen by the audience.

Dinh Manh Ninh from Hanoi, and Ha Hoai Thu from Quang Ninh Province, won the most ‘Promising Singer’ title.

Established in 2004, the Sao Mai Diem Hen musical contest is regarded as one of the most prestigious national musical contests. It is an occasion for young singers to demonstrate their talents in the field of folk-song, opera, pop and rock music.

The Sao Mai Award winners should have many opportunities, to develop further their musical talents and be successful in, their future careers, said organising board member Huyen Thanh.

Pop star Phuong Linh won the event in 2006 and many opportunities developed because of her winning the contest.

Top ten events in culture, sports and tourism in 2010

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially announced ten outstanding cultural, sports and tourism activities in 2010 in Hanoi on Dec. 30. They are:

One of cultural, sports and tourism activities mark the grand celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi,

1. Cultural and fine arts activities mark major celebrations, including the 80th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the national commemoration of the Hung Kings and the Hung King Temple Festival, the 35th anniversary of the liberation of the south and national reunification, President Ho Chi Minh’s 120th birthday, the 65th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (Sept. 2) and the 80th anniversary of the Vietnam National United Front.

2. Cultural, sports and tourism activities mark the grand celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, including the biggest-ever parade held at Ba Dinh Square on October 10, the opening of the Culture-Tourism Village of Vietnamese ethnic groups, an exhibition on Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and Thang Long-Hanoi, the “Thang Long-Hanoi craft villages and streets” festival, the sport competitions and the Vietnamese film days for 1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi.

3. Vietnam’s heritages have been recognised by UNESCO, including the Thang Long Imperial Citadel recognised as a world cultural heritage site, the Saint Giong Festival in Phu Dong and Soc Temples as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the 82 doctoral stone steles at the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, recognised as a world documentary heritage.

4. Cultural activities were held to promote Vietnam’s land and people abroad, including the National Day at the 2010 Shanghai EXPO and the Vietnam Culture Week in Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Belgium, Cambodia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, China and India.

5. International cultural and sport events were held for the first time in Vietnam, including the International Photo Exhibition, International Film Festival, International Piano Contest, Miss Earth and the Thang Long-Hanoi International Football Cup to celebrate the capital city’s millennium birthday.

6. Director and People’s Artist Dang Nhat Minh was honoured by the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contributions to the Vietnam’s cinematography.

7. Sports festivals at all levels and the seventh national sports festival were held.

8. The Vietnamese sport delegation bagged 33 medals including those at five Olympics sport events for the first time at the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD 16); and the Vietnamese disabled athletes secured 17 medals, placing 11th out of 42 delegations at the first Asian Para Games.

9. Vietnam’s tourism sector welcomed five millionth foreign visitor.

10. Tourism promotion campaign in 2010 “Vietnam-Your destination” contributed to attract foreign tourists to Vietnam and promoting domestic tourism. The campaign helped Vietnam welcome over five million foreign arrivals, 28 million local visitors and grossed an estimated revenue of 100 trillion VND.

Vietnam’s hotels among T+L 500 World’s Best Hotels 2010

The Travel + Leisure magazine (US) has recently named four hotels in Vietnam as being among the Top 500 hotels in the world.

Theses hotels include the Sofitel Legend Metropole, and Hilton Opera in Hanoi; and the Caravelle and the Park Hyatt Sai Gon, in Ho Chi Minh City.

The T+L 500 results are based upon an annual survey. This survey in which Travel + Leisure subscribers evaluated hotels on characteristics such as rooms and facilities, location, service, restaurants and food, and the hotel pricing system.  The publication calculated the average rating of each characteristic and tabulated an overall score.

Among them, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi won the Pacific-Asia Travel Association’s (PATA) 2010 gold award, in the Heritage category in August.

Vietnam Catholic Church’s jubilee year 2010 ends

A ceremony to close the Catholic Church of Vietnam Jubilee year 2010 has been hosted in the central province of Quang Tri.

The ceremony, is taking place from January 4-6, and has been co-organized with the La Vang Pilgrims’ 29th congress at the La Vang Parish, in Hai Lang District.

This is a large event for the Catholic Church of Vietnam and will attract a lot of priests, bishops and nuns nationally.

In addition, the ceremony also has representatives from other catholic churches worldwide, uncluding France, the US, Philippines, Malaysia, Italy, Korea, Thailand and Canada.

Several activities will be hosted in the three-day ceremony.
