The 50th anniversary of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam was celebrated in HCM City on December 20 by the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF)’s Central Committee and the HCM City’s administration.

The celebration was attended by politburo member and member of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee’s Secretariat, Truong Tan Sang, former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, CPV Secretary and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, Ha Thi Khiet and President of the VFF’s Central Committee, Huynh Dam along with other Party and State leaders.

In his speech, Mr Dam recalled the establishment of the NLF, which marked a turning point in the southern revolution and was an indispensable part of the history and creativity of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh.

During the 15-year period from the NLF’s establishment to the 1975 Great Spring Victory, Vietnamese soldiers and people liberated all of south Vietnam for national unification, glorifying the national history, in which the NLF played a very important role.

The Vietnamese Party and State always praise the NLF’s significant contributions to national liberation, Mr Sang said.

He asked the VFF to uphold the NLF’s glorious tradition by diversifying activities, promoting patriotic emulation movements and encouraging all Vietnamese people to make more contributions to the cause of national construction and defence.

On the occasion, the Party and State presented the Order of Great Unity to 70 NLF former leaders and members of the Advisory Council of the provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam and the Alliance of National, Democratic and Peace Forces in recognition for their contributions to building the great national unity bloc, socialism and national defense.

QĐND – Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 20:54 (GMT+7)

A solemn ceremony was organised in Xuan Thoi Thuong commune in Ho Chi Minh City’s outlying district of Hoc Mon on Nov. 22 to commemorate 70 years of the Southern Uprising.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet joined other senior Party and government officials, local authorities from 13 southern cities and provinces and almost 4,000 heroic mothers, war veterans and people from all walks of life at the ceremony.

In his speech delivered at the event, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Le Thanh Hai recalled bright milestones of the Southern Uprising, which broke out on Nov. 23, 1940.

Due to the lack of mature preparations and conditions, the uprising failed, but wrote glorious, brilliant pages in the revolutionary history of the Party and people and set an example of brave struggle, indomitable will, revolutionary attacking spirit and patriotism, he said.

The official stressed that the spirit of the Southern Uprising was the rising spirit of the nation, the spirit for the country and the people, and the spirit of ceaseless combat. It imbued and upheld the nation’s patriotic and heroic tradition and glorious history in the new era, struggling under the flag of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought, Hai added.

He went on to say that, “The Southern Uprising laid a foundation for our people to rise up and gain glorious victory in the August Revolution, and left profound and valuable lessons for revolutionary stages in the present and the future”.

On behalf of the youth, Secretary of Hoc Mon district’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Committee Dang Tran Truc Dao said the spirit of the Southern Uprising would be a valuable tradition for both current and future young generations, encouraging them to contribute further to the industrialization and modernization process of the city and the whole country.

At the ceremony, the Party Chief asked the Central Office to prepare thoroughly for the coming 11th National Party Congress.

He urged the agency to improve its professional work, ensuring each staff member of the Office fully grasps late President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings on the crucial importance of office work and follows his moral standards.

Obama to visit New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina anniversary

In Uncategorized on August 14, 2010 at 7:23 am

WASHINGTON, Aug 13, 2010 (AFP) – US President Barack Obama will visit New Orleans in late August, the White House said Friday, to mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city and much of the US Gulf Coast.

Obama will travel on August 29 to Louisiana’s largest city, and “members of the president’s cabinet who’ve worked to speed recovery and restoration efforts in the region also will be in New Orleans to mark the anniversary,” spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

In 2005, Katrina unleashed torrential rains, leading to disastrous flooding that left about 1,600 people dead, destroyed thousands of homes and marred the presidency of Obama’s predecessor George W. Bush, whose administration was severely criticized for its handling of the crisis.

Obama’s visit will include remarks at Xavier University of Louisiana, Gibbs said.

The trip will be the latest in a series of Obama visits to the Gulf Coast since a BP-leased oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April, triggering the largest accidental oil spill in history.

This weekend he travels to Florida’s Gulf Coast for a family trip intended to show solidarity with a region struggling in the wake of the massive spill, which devastated the area economy that had barely recovered from the Katrina disaster five years earlier.

The 2005 hurricane overwhelmed New Orleans’s series of protective levees and flood walls along the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, leading to the inundation of entire neighborhoods and the high death toll in the city founded by the French three centuries ago.

Bush came under withering criticism for appearing detached from the disaster and not touching down in the affected area when he first visited, instead conducting a flyover on Air Force One.

The debacle was deepened by a clear lack of communication between Washington and the then political chiefs in Louisiana.

While the White House dismisses analogies between the 2005 storm and the huge oil spill, it has nevertheless spent effort countering accusations that the spill is “Obama’s Katrina.”

During his own first visit to the oil spill disaster zone on May 2, nearly two weeks after oil began gushing from the ruptured well, Obama made a point of visiting the fishing village of Venice, Louisiana and rolling up his sleeves to get involved in the response effort.
