74 scientific researches win 12th Eureka Award

Some 74 scientific projects were awarded in the 12th Eureka Award for student’s scientific research at HCMC Youth Cultural House on January 4.

The HCMC Communist Youth League and Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), organized the annual Eureka event. This year 500 projects from students across 31 universities and colleges applied for the Eureka Award, the highest number of applicants in the history of the award since 1999.


The organizers announced one special prize, six first prizes, 9 second prizes, 10 third prizes and 37 consolation prizes. In addition, the organizers also gave nine first prize and two consolation prizes to some graduates that had excel in their field.


Many of them are highly regarded in the field of science. The VND10 million special prizes were given to Le Khac Anh Ky, who is from the Poly-technique University. His project ‘The synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of a Metal Organic Framework: MOF-5’ was published in the international scientific magazine ‘Applied Catalysis A’.  The article was first published on April 28 2010, and is available online since May 5, 2010. Students that won the first prize received VND5 million each.


Mrs. Than Thi Thu, a member of the Standing Committee, said at the event; “We are so proud of the youth’s achievement in science and the city leaders have created favorable working conditions, for young scientists to carry out their research.”


The Eureka Award projects were introduced in the library at 1 Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 1 and the library is open from Tuesday to Friday each week. Three enterprises win int’l quality award

Three Vietnamese enterprises have won the International Asia Pacific Quality Award (IAPQA) by the International Asia Pacific Quality Organisation.

The Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) announced the winners on Dec. 21.

They were the Viglacera Ha Long Joint Stock Company from the northern province of Quang Ninh, the Phu Nhuan Jewelry Joint Stock Company (PNJ) from Ho Chi Minh City and the Long Hau Joint Stock Company from southern Long An province.

The STAMEQ also announced a list of 96 enterprises winning the National Quality Award, including 11 golds and 85 silvers.

A ceremony to hand over the IAPQA and the national awards is scheduled to be held on Dec. 26.

Nearly 70 artists and works nominated for Golden Apricot Blossom Award

The election round of the Golden Apricot Blossom Award for Television programs, serial, stage, cinema and music will start on December 10 and finish on January 20, 2011.

In the board of music category, singers will compete for titles including “Best Pop Male/Female Singer”, “Best Male/Female Singer in revolutionary traditional song”, and “Best Male/Female Singer in folk song”.


The B board of the stage will include “Best dramatic actors/actresses”, “Best cai luong actors/actresses”, “Best comedian” and “Best drama/cai luong play” awards.


There will be also titles including “Best film” and “Best actor/actress” in the movies and TV serial of the C board.


Ta Minh Tam,  Do Thuy, Quyen Linh, Quynh Huong and Phan Anh will vie for Best MC “Master of ceremonies” award.


The award ceremony of the event will take place at the Hoa Binh Theater in Ho Chi Minh City on January 22, 2011. A music performance honoring the top ten favorite singers will be held on January 24.


The nomination round in which Nguoi Lao Dong’s readers named best artists was kicked off in last October and finished in the begining of this month. Artists, who won most votes, were listed in the election round with evaluation from experts and journalists.

Started in 1995, the Golden Apricot Blossom Award of the Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper has been popular and become an anual prestigous event.

Linda Le wins Wepler Award

The Wepler Award, worth €10,000, was presented to French writer Linda Le, of Vietnamese origin, for her work titles Cronos published by Christian Bourgois Publishing House.


The work Cronos tells story of an imaginary city ruled by two dictators. To save her father, an astronomer, a girl has to marry one of the two dictators. Knowing that she is pregnant, she decides to resign from office and follows protesters.


Born in 1963 in Vietnam, Linda Le arrived in France in 1977. Her first novel Un si tender vampire (A gentle vampire) was published when she was 23 years old. She was awarded Vocation in 1990, Renaissance on short story in 1993 and Fénéon in 1997. Some of her works have been translated into English, Dutch, Portuguese and Vietnamese.


Wepler is a literary award established in 1998 under the initiative of Abbesses Book Store with the support from Fondation La Poste and Brasserie Wepler Organisations.


This annual award is presented on November for a contemporary writer without trade purpose.

PANO- On November 23rd evening, the Central Committee of The Vietnam Student Association and the Company Information VMS- Mobifone held a scholarship program “Mobifone for Vietnamese future 2010” in Hanoi.


In this year, the program has awarded 500 scholarships worth VND 1 billion to encourage pupils and students with good study records in 30 provinces and cities nationwide.


Last year, Mobifone also awarded 1,000 scholarships worth VND 1 billion to students.

VietnamPlus and Siemens signed a partnership agreement in Hanoi on October 21 whereby VietnamPlus will be the media sponsor for Siemens Green Technology Journalism Award 2010.


This award is created for the first time in ASEAN in order to acknowledge and reward journalists for excellent reporting on energy efficiency, industrial productivity and sustainability issues. It is open to print and online media from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.


All submissions for the Siemens Green Technology Journalism Award 2010 must be published from January 1 to December 31, 2010, in mainstream media such as newspapers, magazines or websites of professional journalist groups.


Articles will be judged in English, so journalists are encouraged to include their own translation for those reports which are written in Vietnamese.


Entries will be evaluated according to their news value, relevance to the three award categories – Energy Efficiency, Industrial Productivity and Sustainability – as well as the journalist’s writing and language skills.


For each category, there will be an award for the category and a merit winner. Winners will receive cash prizes as well as the opportunity to attend a seminar on sustainability and new technologies organised by the Technical University of Berlin, and to visit Siemens’ R&D and production centres in Germany.

Radio Voice of Vietnam wins 2010 ABU award

Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has won the Jury’s Special Prize awarded by the Asian-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) at the 47th ABU General Assembly, which opened in Tokyo on October 19.

VOV took the prize for its documentary “Culture Guardians”, a 30-minute programme, which fascinated audiences with moving stories of people who have devoted their lives to preserving the beauty and values of traditional cultures.


This is the first time that VOV has won an ABU prize, although in 2009, an entry from VOV4 made it to the final round.


VOV sent two entries, including “Culture Guardians” by Tran Nhat Minh, Tran Hong Hanh and Hoang Phuong Trang from VOV2 channel.


The ABU’s Prizes are presented annually, to improve the quality of radio and television programmes and to strengthen cultural and educational understanding between member countries in the union and region.


According to the ABU, in 2010, 25 countries and territories sent in 199 entries, including 141 TV programmes and 58 for radio.


The ABU was founded in 1964 to develop the broadcasting sector in the Asia-Pacific region and increase cooperation through exchanges of information, programmes and technical and services consultancies. The ABU now has 197 members in 56 countries and territories.
