The Ho Chi Minh City Sponsor Association for Poor Patients began providing free surgery for 1,000 cataract patients November 23 at the People’s Hospital 115 in the city.

The hospital will perform surgery on 200 patients in the first stage by coordination with doctors from Cho Ray and the Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital.

There are around 380,000 blind people in Vietnam — or 0.59 percent of the country’s population — with women accounting for two thirds of them. Most women go blind due to diseases like cataract, trachoma, diabetes and glaucoma.

HCM City (VNA) – The HCM City Eye Hospital conducted a cataract surgery on a rare animal for the first time on December 1, helping a langur, listed as endangered, to find foods.

Doctors said the Phaco eye surgery, during which doctors implanted crystalline lenses on the four-and-half- year-old gibbon, lasted 24 hours and its result was better than expected.

The langur, which belongs to a species under threat of extinction, can now move normally and easily find food, they said.

Gibbon MIKA is expected to be returned to the Nam Cat Tien Park in several months.-

Chinese group helps bring light to 20,000 cataract patients

Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi Eye Hospital , with assistance of China ’s Mega Group, has conducted cataract surgery for more than 20,000 patients over the last 10 years.

A meeting to mark 10 years of cooperation between the hospital and the Chinese group was held in Hanoi on Nov. 29.

On the occasion, the Minister of Health honoured Mega group’s General Director L.P Anderson and director of the Mega Eye Centre Cung Li Li with the “For the People’s Health.”

In 1998, Mega experts transferred the Phaco technique, the latest in cataract surgery at the time, to the Hanoi Eye Hospital .

In phaco method, an ultra sound or laser probe is used to break the lens apart without harming the capsule. These fragments are then aspirated out of the eye. A foldable intraocular lens is then introduced through the 3m incision. Once inside the eye, the lens unfolds to take position inside the capsule. No sutures are needed, as the incision is self-healing.

The technique is now applied at many local hospitals, including Dong Da, Saint Paul and Bac Thang Long.-
