Vietnam to host final round of Asia U19 Women’s Football Champs

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) granted Vietnam clearance to host the final round of the Asia U19 Women’s Football Championship 2011.


The championship will take place from October 6 to 16, 2011.


After successfully competing in the second qualifying round, the Vietnamese U19 team will enter the final round with five others – Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, China and Australia.


Vietnam will announce the match-ups in the near future.

Pham Van Mach attends world champs

Bodybuilder Pham Van Mach and his coach Huynh Anh have left for India to attend the 2010 World Bodybuilding Championships, scheduled to take place from October 30-31.


Mach hopes to preserve his championship title in this competition. 


He will then attend the second annual 2010 Asian Beach Games in December and hopes to win gold for Vietnam’s team.

Minh to face lowly opponents in early rounds of World Champs

Nguyen Tien Minh is set to play low ranking opponents during the first two rounds of the World Badminton Championship.


The draw was announced on August 9 in Paris.


The Vietnamese player, who failed to defend his Chinese Taipei Grand Prix Gold last week, will play Atrashchenkov of Ukraine, who is not ranked in the world’s top 50, during the first round. In his second match, if Minh defeats Atrashchenkov then he will face the winner of the match between Raul Must from Estonia and Dieter Domke of Germany.


The Vietnamese, who is currently ranked No 6 in the world, will leave for France with the duo Duong Bao Duc and Thai Thi Hong Gam, who will compete in the mixed doubles event. The couple will play Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama and Ying Suet Tse of Hong Kong in the first round.


The world tournament will start on August 23 and wrap up six days later.

National junior wushu champs opens in Hanoi

Close to 300 martial artists from 24 cities and provinces throughout the country are competing at the National Junior Wushu Championships, which opened in Hanoi on July 31.


The athletes are contending for 78 sets of medals in Taolu (performance) and Sanshou (combat) events.


In Taolu events, the athletes are divided into three age groups: 17-18, 12-16 and under 12 years old, while those competing in Sanshou events are separated into 17-18 and 15-16 year-old groups.


Organisers said with more than 30 talented martial artists, the Hanoi team is considered the favourite at this year’s tournament and Ho Chi Minh City’s squad is expected to take second place.


The championships will run until August 6.

Nine Vietnamese shooters join world champs

The national shooting squad with nine members went to Munich, Germany to attend the World Shooting Championship from August 1-8.


The team includes: Nguyen Manh Tuong, Tran Hoang Vu, Nguyen Van Tung, Do Duc Hung, Dang Hong Ha, Nguyen Thi Le Quyen, Vu Thanh Hung, Nguyen Thi Xuan and Duong Anh Quan.


They will compete in both pistol and rifle categories.


It is a faint hope to win medals at the world tournament, but this is a good chance for Vietnamese shooters to gain experience to prepare for the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China later this year and seek a ticket to the Olympic 2012.

Young National Football Champs held in Thanh Hoa

As many as 32 teams are competing at the Young National Football Championships- MILO Cup 2010, in the central city of Thanh Hoa from June 21-27.


The championships, organised by the Ministry of Education and Training, aims to provide primary and secondary school children with a playground and help them learn lessons about discipline, team spirit and strong will.


From this event, the organising board expects to select young, talented footballers for the national squad in preparation for the upcoming ASEAN sports festivals.


Cash prizes, worth VND80 million, will be sponsored by Nestle MILO to be divided between the winners and runners-up.

Quang Ngai hosts national motorbike race champs

As many as 24 racers from Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, An Giang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ngai competed for the professional 125cc motorbike championships in the south central province Quang Ngai on June 20.


After competing 3 laps of 9.6km, Ho Chi Minh’s Nguyen Quang Khai won the champion title, the runner-up was Nguyen Thanh Vu and third place went to Luu Thanh Tuan and Nguyen Viet Linh.


The championships was jointly held by the Vietnam Motor and Bicycle Sports Association and the Quang Ngai provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Youth Taekwondo Champs closes

The 2010 Youth Taekwondo Championships ended in the northern province of Phu Yen on June 15.


After the six-day event, 31 of the 35 teams attending the tournament earned medals. Ho Chi Minh City’s team was placed the first position for both men’s and women’s events with 15 golds, 7 silvers and 9 bronzes.  


In the women’s event, teams from Hanoi and Binh Thuan were ranked second and third with 4 and 3 golds, respectively.  


Meanwhile, in the men’s event, 11 medals went to Hanoi, ranking the second. Tien Giang won 3 medals, placed the third position.


The host, Phu Yen obtained 9 medals for both men’s and women’s events.


After the tournament, the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation will choose some excellent athletes to add to the national team.

Vietnam start strongly at Asian Badminton Champs

Vietnamese mixed duo Le Ngoc Nguyen Nhung and Huynh Nguyen Khang advanced to play in the main round of the Yonex Sunrise Badminton Asia Championships.


The pair defeated Karuna Dinulsa and Chandrika de Silva of Sri Lanka 21-12, 17-21, 21-16 on April 13 in the second qualifier in New Delhi, India.


Later Nguyen Hoang Hai and Nguyen Thi Binh Tho beat Uddin Rais Md and Alina Sultana from Banglales 21-16, 21-5.


The duos will join two men’s doubles and two women’s doubles teams from Vietnam in the main round. Vietnam ’s key player Nguyen Tien Minh who is seeded No. 4 at the tournament will play the unknown Shao Wen Shu from Chinese Taipei, who is ranked No 259, in the men’s singles.


Minh, who is ranked seventh in the world, expects to meet Malaysian Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, who Minh both beat and lost to in 2009, next round.


If the Olympian makes it to the quarter-finals, he will likely to challenge Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand, who he defeated 2-1 at the Thailand Open last year.


HCM City-based Nguyen Hoang Nam and Nguyen Hoang Hai will play in the men’s singles event. Nguyen Nhung is the only representative in the women’s singles event, after her teammates Tho and Phung Nguyen Phuong Nhi lost in the qualifying rounds.


Similarly in the women’s tournament, four of the world’s top 10 players will play at the event.

Ten top Vietnamese badminton players will compete at the Asian Badminton Championships in India from April 12-18.


Following the Asian Badminton Federation draw Nguyen Tien Minh, Le Ha Anh, Nguyen Hoang Nam and Nguyen Hoang Hai are all seeded to play in the event’s main round.


In the women’s tournament, only Le Ngoc Nguyen Nhung has been seeded. Phuong Nhi and Binh Tho will have to play in the qualifying round.


Vietnam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh is expected to reach the semi-final.
