Enjoying Christmas festivities in city

Many of the city’s entertainment venues are busy these days, offering exciting activities and entertainment programs in order to make your Christmas experience more enjoyable.

Ho Chi Minh City is ‘decked out’ with colorful lights and Christmas decorations. Streets are very crowded with locals and tourists enjoying Christmas.


A concert entitled ‘Colors of the winter night’ featuring Christmas songs will be performed in Ho Chi Minh City Youth’s Cultural House on December 25.


Furthermore, ‘Winter night-happy new year’, is an activity for children taking place at HCM City Children’s House on December 24. The program includes a music performance, a winter fair, a masquerade and a circus.


The Idecaf Theater will present a new drama play entitled ‘Lucky genie’.


The Dam Sen Cultural Park will lure visitors with musical performances, comedies and puppetries.


The highlight will be a concert entitled ‘Gala Xmas 2010’ featuring the pop star Dam Vinh Hung. This will bring a happy and enjoyable time to all music lovers. In addition, a special music show welcoming in the New Year for 2011, will take place on December 31.


The ‘Red Lotus 2011’ hip-hop competition is expected to attract large amounts of young people on January 1, 2011.


Meanwhile, Le Quy Duong Company will cooperate with the ‘Beloved heart club’ of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth’s Cultural House, to offer gifts and scholarships to disadvantaged students from Thanh Tung Primary School. The school is in Dinh Quan District, Dong Nai Province and the event will take place on December 25.

City opens New Year Greeting Festival

The Ho Chi Minh City authorities have offered a festival to people from December 26 to January 2 in order to celebrate the New Year 2011.

The event themed ‘2011 the youth’s year – year for children’ aims to celebrate the upcoming 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.


The weeklong festival will bring free and interesting programs, which will include the HCM City’s socio-economic achievement exhibition and many musical performances. 


Special art performances will be held at industrial zones such as Tan Thuan, Linh Trung 1&2, Le Minh Xuan, Tan Binh, Tan Tao, Hiep Phuoc, Cultural Center of District 12, Ben Duoc and Nga Ba Giong Martyr Memorial Site in Chu Chi District and finally the National Historical Cultural Park in District 9. These performances will be held on December 31.


An international food festival, featuring special dishes from over 20 countries, is taking place on September 23 in Ho Chi Minh City.


The event will include a cooking contest, in which visitors are given the opportunity to taste these special Vietnamese and world dishes. In addition, there will be a giant banh xeo (Vietnamese rice pancake) and musical shows and folk games, for people to enjoy.

City hosts ASEAN Golden Voice Festival 2011

The 2nd ASEAN Golden Voice Festival will take place at the Ho Chi Minh City Television Theater on January 5, 7 and 8.

The contest has attracted nearly 20 singers from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Special invitees from Japan will also join them.


Every country is allowed to send four participants. Representing Viet Nam will be singers Thu Minh, Kasim Hoang Vu, H’Zina Bya and Do Tung Lam.

They will go up against well-known singers including FIQ and Moon (Brunei); Plengpraphun Kingthong and Wongloung Sirilux (Thailand); Khim Su Su Naing and Mr.Kyaw Zin Min (Myanmar); Iqwal Hafiz and Katherine Chan (Malaysia); Netta Kusumah Dewi and Hershon (Indonesia); Uela Basco (Philippines); and finally, Samsann Annda and Vannika (Cambodia).


The competition consists of two categories — traditional and contemporary folk music, and pop. In the pop category, singers will have to perform in English, but folk songs can be in their mother tongues.

The jury will comprise famous Vietnamese musicians such as Tran Long An, Nguyen Ngoc Thien and Duong Thu; Japanese leading music producer Keitaro Kamo; Indonesian music teacher and choreographer Indira Sotyawati.


There will be two categories, each offering four gold medals, four silver medals, four bronze medals, and a prize nominated by audiences. 

The contest is jointly organized by Ho Chi Minh City Television and Cat Tien Sa Advertising Company. The contest will be broadcast live on HTV9 channel and other regional channels.

Vietnam hosted the ASEAN Golden Voice Festival for the first time in 2008.

International seminar on amateur music to be held in city

An international seminar on don ca tai tu (southern amateur music) and its impromptu harmony will be held in Ho Chi Minh City on January 9-11, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism.

The event is part of the project on southern music submitted to UNESCO for recognition as an intangible part of the Vietnamese cultural heritage.


Local traditional music researchers, administrators, musicians, don ca tai tu artisans, together with music experts from France, Germany, Cyprus, Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Singapore will join the seminar.


The Ministry, the Vietnam Music Institute and Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism, have jointly organized the event.

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Tuy Hoa increase for Tet

Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO) announced a plan to increase nine flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Tuy Hoa (Phu Yen Province) and back, during the Tet holiday.

The flights using the ATR72 airplane are scheduled for January 24, 25, 27,29,30,31 and February 1 and 3. So far, VASCO has operated one flight on this route per day.


The provincial authorities have just proposed to Vietnam Airlines to add 7 flights from Hanoi to Tuy Hoa for the Tet holiday. The route has currently five flights a week.


In related news, visitors to the Hoi An ancient town, increased substantially at the New Year, said the Hoi An Department of Commerce and Tourism on December 3.

Most hotels were ‘booked out’ and more than 4,000 tourists visited the UNESCO World Heritage site. Many tourists visited handicraft villages and local sightseeing areas.

More flights for Ho Chi Minh City – Tuy Hoa route


QĐND – Thursday, January 06, 2011, 21:19 (GMT+7)

PANO – The Vietnam Air Services Company will increase, by 9, flights on the Ho Chi Minh City – Tuy Hoa route, said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tri, Deputy Director of the Phu Yen Provincial Department of Transportation.


Accordingly, these additional flights will be launched on 24th, 25th, 27th, 30th and 31st of January, using the Aerospace ATR72, to meet the demands of passengers during the coming Tet holiday.


On this occasion, the southern province of Phu Yen has also asked the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, to launch two more flights per week on the Ho Chi Minh City – Tuy Hoa route for tourists during the National Tourism Year held in Phu Yen and some other South Central provinces.


At present, there are only five flights per week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday on the Ho Chi Minh City – Tuy Hoa route.

Authorities set to turn Cam Ranh town into city

On December 23, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed decision No 65/NP-CP, turning Cam Ranh Town into a city, which is in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

Cam Ranh has a population of around 130,000 households and covers an area of more than 30,000ha.


The city has a deep-water bay with many beautiful beaches and it is some 30km away from the coastal city of Nha Trang.


The Khanh Hoa People’s Committee has approved a planning project to develop Cam Ranh. This will start now until 2025.


In addition, Cam Ranh airport became an international airport with the opening of an official direct air route linking Cam Ranh and Vladivostock in Russia last December.


The national aviation sector invested more than VND200 billion in building a new terminal, air traffic control station, a modern runway lights and other facilities in Cam Ranh Airport. The capacity of the new terminal doubles the old one which was only capable of loading 300 passengers per hour.


Khanh Hoa has currently two big cities including Nha Trang and Cam Ranh, and a town called Ninh Hoa.

HCM City hosts 4th ornamental tree festival 2010

The fourth ornamental tree festival 2010 is being held in the Suoi Tien Tourist Area, Ho Chi Minh City from December 22 to January 3, 2011.

The annual festival showcases more than 5,000 exhibits of various varieties of ornamental trees and plants including bonsais, orchids and cacti.

More than 50 artisans along with some flower clubs and companies from across the country will participate.

Over 160 booths will display exotic ornamental plants varieties and some will also display ornamental birds, decorative fruit arrangements and rock garden displays. 

The highlights of the festival will be the bird singing competition, dog show and exquisite ornamental fish.

The festival is expected to attract a large number of visitors and will also be an opportunity for artisans to exchange and share information on the methods of caring and collecting ornamental plants.
