City arrests container thief

HCM CITY — HCM City police on Sunday arrested the head of a gang that specialises in robbing the contents of large containers shipped from overseas and within the country.

Police arrested Nguyen Duc Toan Anh at a coffee shop on Nguyen Van Cu Street in District 5, seizing US$110,000 in cash and several expensive items, including a watch and two cell phones.

According to police, Toan Anh said that he had been staying at a hotel in HCM City since May, using a phony personal identification.

Police said Toan Anh and his team co-operated with the drivers of lorries to secure the containers as they were being driven to designated areas after passing through customs at city ports.

In May, police staged an ambush after receiving a tip that Toan Anh and several others would be staging a robbery in District 12. While most of his accomplices, including lorry drivers, were caught, Anh was able to escape by hiding under a lorry for three hours.

The police said that Anh’s team had participated in robberies in HCM City and the southern provinces of Ba Ria Vung Tau, Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

The contents of each stolen container were valued between VND500 million and VND1.5 billion (US$30,000-90,000) each. —
