Thailand, Guatemala contestants win “Miss Photogenic” and “Miss Friendly”

Two minor titles of the Miss Earth 2010 pagean including “Miss Photogenic” and “Miss Friendly” belonged to Watsaporn Wattanakoon of Thailand and Sue Ellen Castaneda Herrera from Guatemala.

Watsaporn Wattanakoon, 23, was crowned Miss Thailand Earth 2010.  She is currently studying Communication Arts and serves as spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organizations.

The final night of the beauty contest will take place at Vinpearl Land Resort and Spa on Hon Tre Island, Khanh Hoa Province’s Nha Trang City on December 4.

The event will be aired live on VTV1, VTV4, ABS-CBN, Star World and many TV channels in other countries.

Miss Earth 2010 contestants raise awareness on environmental protection

Miss Earth 2010 contestants joined in environmental protection activities in the ancient town of Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam on November 22.

The activities included the “Earth Hour and Hoi An ancient town” program; a bicycle parade; and an exchange featuring music performances, traditional festivals, folk games and more between beauties and local residents and visitors at the An Hoi statue garden.

The beauty queens also gave gifts and medicines to disadvantaged children in Quang Nam Orphan Education Center and the Hoi An Red Cross.

Mr, Nguyen Cong Khe, chairman of the Thanh Nien Media Corporation donated VND500 million (US$25,000) to a fund for poor people in Quang Nam.

Miss Vietnam 2010 contestants are highly educated

85 percent of Miss Vietnam 2010 contestants either graduated from universities or are studying at universities nationwide, Doan Cong Huynh, Chief Editor of Tien Phong Newspaper and Head of the Miss Vietnam Contest’s organization board announced at a press conference in Hanoi on July 14.

The number of contestants this year is higher than previous times, beyond the expectation, said Huynh.


The youngest contestants, 18 years-old, have just graduated from senior high school.


The contest’s qualifying and semifinal rounds will be held in Hanoi from July 22-24 and from July 19-21 in Ho Chi Minh City, said an organizer.


From each area, twenty contestants will be chosen to join the final, which will be held from August 1- 15.


The final night will take place in Ha Long Town’s Tuan Chau tourist area on August 15, said the organizer.


According to the organizer, Miss Vietnam 2010 will receive VND500 million (US$25,000), the 1st Runner up award is worth VND200 million ($10,000) and the 2nd Runner up stands to gain VND100 million ($5,000). Miss Talent, Miss Friendly, Miss Beach and Miss Beautiful Face will all receive awards VND50 million ($2,500) each.


This year’s Miss Vietnam pageant will be part of the 1,000th anniversary celebrations of Thang Long-Hanoi, said Huynh.

Mrs. World contestants arrive in Vietnam

Nearly 40 contestants for the final round of the Mrs. World 2009 pageant, held in Vietnam this year, took part in various activities in Ho Chi Minh City November 4.

The women had a meeting with the city’s leaders and visited Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh Market and the Gia Gia Gemstone Center, where many craftsman with disabilities work.


They also presented more than 500 gifts to the Thi Nghe Orphanage and Disabled Children’s’ Center in Binh Thanh District.


“I think it is not only beauty queens, everyone should be interested in disadvantaged children. People on the Earth should give their special love to children,” said Kelly Pittman Mrs. Georgia 2009 .


The contestants will travel to Ba Ria-Vung Tau on November 5 and visit the province’s Martyrs Cemetery and pay tribute at the statue of heroine Vo Thi Sau.


They will also visit the Minh Dam revolutionary base, which was used during the anti-French colonialist and anti-American imperialist resistance wars, as well as paying a visit to a school for deaf children.


The opening ceremony of the final round of the Mrs. World 2009 pageant will be held at Imperial Hotel in Vung Tau City on November 7.


Canadian TV star, Alan Thicke is to be master of ceremonies, which will take place at Multi-sport Stadium on November 22 and be broadcast on various channels including VTV4, VTV 9 and Star World.


Vietnam is represented by Mrs. Vietnam 2009, Hoang Thi Yen, and the first runner-up, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha.  They will compete with nearly 70 women for the title.


The remaining contestants will arrive in Vietnam over the next few days.
