Top ten events in culture, sports and tourism in 2010

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially announced ten outstanding cultural, sports and tourism activities in 2010 in Hanoi on Dec. 30. They are:

One of cultural, sports and tourism activities mark the grand celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi,

1. Cultural and fine arts activities mark major celebrations, including the 80th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the national commemoration of the Hung Kings and the Hung King Temple Festival, the 35th anniversary of the liberation of the south and national reunification, President Ho Chi Minh’s 120th birthday, the 65th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (Sept. 2) and the 80th anniversary of the Vietnam National United Front.


2. Cultural, sports and tourism activities mark the grand celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, including the biggest-ever parade held at Ba Dinh Square on October 10, the opening of the Culture-Tourism Village of Vietnamese ethnic groups, an exhibition on Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and Thang Long-Hanoi, the “Thang Long-Hanoi craft villages and streets” festival, the sport competitions and the Vietnamese film days for 1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi.


3. Vietnam’s heritages have been recognised by UNESCO, including the Thang Long Imperial Citadel recognised as a world cultural heritage site, the Saint Giong Festival in Phu Dong and Soc Temples as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the 82 doctoral stone steles at the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, recognised as a world documentary heritage.


4. Cultural activities were held to promote Vietnam’s land and people abroad, including the National Day at the 2010 Shanghai EXPO and the Vietnam Culture Week in Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Belgium, Cambodia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, China and India.


5. International cultural and sport events were held for the first time in Vietnam, including the International Photo Exhibition, International Film Festival, International Piano Contest, Miss Earth and the Thang Long-Hanoi International Football Cup to celebrate the capital city’s millennium birthday.


6. Director and People’s Artist Dang Nhat Minh was honoured by the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contributions to the Vietnam’s cinematography.


7. Sports festivals at all levels and the seventh national sports festival were held.


8. The Vietnamese sport delegation bagged 33 medals including those at five Olympics sport events for the first time at the 16th Asian Games (ASIAD 16); and the Vietnamese disabled athletes secured 17 medals, placing 11th out of 42 delegations at the first Asian Para Games.


9. Vietnam’s tourism sector welcomed five millionth foreign visitor.


10. Tourism promotion campaign in 2010 “Vietnam-Your destination” contributed to attract foreign tourists to Vietnam and promoting domestic tourism. The campaign helped Vietnam welcome over five million foreign arrivals, 28 million local visitors and grossed an estimated revenue of 100 trillion VND.

Top ten events in information, communications

The project, “To promptly turn Vietnam into a power nation in information technology and communications ” was selected as one of the top ten events of the year in information and communications.


Other events announced by the Ministry of Information and Communications in Hanoi on December 22 included a national target programme, “To make information accessible to residents of mountainous and remote areas, border communities and islands”, and the National Assembly approval of the Post Law.


Among the top ten list were: telecommunication businesses leading the nation in tax payments, a move to tighten management of internet and games online businesses, information security identified as urgent and vital to institutions and businesses, a biggest ever international book fair, the first ASEAN Community festival of pictures, documentary and feature movies, the first-ever press fair held in Paris, and Vietnam winning first prize at an international writing contest held by UPU.


The Ministry of Information and Communications described the project on IT and communications power, which was approved by the Prime Minister this year, as a strategic project, creating a foundation for development of the information and communications industry.


A project on information development in remote and mountainous areas, islands and border areas aims to narrow the gap of benefits in this field between rural and urban people. The project is scheduled to benefit 3,000 villages, including 1,700 remote villages, in the most disadvantaged 250 districts, from 2011-2015. The project offers assistance in personnel training, investment in grassroots hardware foundations and supply of audio-visual equipment for target families.

Vietnamese students compete in 8 sport events at the AUG 15


QĐND – Wednesday, December 15, 2010, 21:7 (GMT+7)

PANO- A Vietnamese sports delegation, including 157 students, coaches, officials and referees, has left Hanoi to attend the 15th ASEAN University Games 2010 (AUG 15) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from December 15th to 23rd.


Vietnamese students will compete in 8 out of 17 events, including athletics, Pencak silat, football, swimming, table tennis, Teakwondo, Karatedo and volleyball.


In addition, during the games, there are also other activities between sports delegations from ASEAN countries, such as cultural exchanges and guided tours.


The Vietnamese delegation also brings to the Games many national traditional gifts, such as images of Long Bien Bridge and Khue Van Cac, to help regional friends learn more about Vietnam’s culture and people.

Photo exhibitions mark national events

An exhibition featuring the anti-American Resistance War for National Salvation, cultural, social and economic achievements and events of Ho Chi Minh City during 35 years is being held at Lam Son Park in District 1 and to run until May 15.

The display titled “Great victory in Spring 1975- Proud of Ho Chi Minh City’ building and development during 35 years” aims to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the National Reunification Day on April 30 (1975-2010), the Labor Day on May 1, the 120th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (1890-2010) and 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Thang Long – Hanoi.

To mark the 35th anniversary of the publication of the first issue (May 5, 1975-2010) and the National Reunification Day, Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper (SGGP) also opened a photo exhibition called “Moments in 35 years” in Hanoi on April 21.

More than 100 pictures taken by journalists in the display is regarded as a panorama of SGGP Newspaper and Ho Chi Minh City during 35 years, said SGGP’s editor in chief Tran The Tuyen.

They also depict affection of leaders and people in the country for the active and creative newspaper, he added.

The event was attended by Minister of Information and Communication Le Doan Hop, Mr. Andrey G. Kovtun, Russian Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr. Fredesman Turro Gongalez, Cuban Ambassador ,

Quang Tri holds seminar on region’s historical events

An international seminar of historical events in Laos and Vietnam’s Central region was held at the Lao Bao border gate, central province of Quang Tri, September 8.

The discussion was attended by local leaders, including former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu; Mr. Truong Tan Sang, Politburo Member of the Communist Party and Permanent Member of Secretariat of the Party Central Committee; Mr. To Huy Rua, head of the Party Central Committee Commission of Propaganda and Training and chair of the Steering Board for compilation of the history of the special Vietnam-Laos relationship.


The seminar also welcomed Laotian leaders Samane Vinhaketh, Politburo member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and head of the LPRP Central Committee’s Steering Board for Ideology, Theory and Culture and chair of the Steering Board for compilation of the history of the special Vietnam-Laos relationship; and Phandouangchith Vongsa, member of the LPRP Central Committee (LPRP CC) and head of the LPRP CC’s Commission for Information and Training, as well as deputy chair of the Steering Board for compilation of the history of the special Vietnam-Laos relationship.


Mr. Truong Tan Sang stressed that the compilation steering board should focus on strategic locations and importance of Laos and Vietnam’s Central region, basing factors on victory of the two countries in the anti-American and French resistance wars and building the East-West Economic Corridor.


Mr. To Huy Rua highly appreciated the seminar’s clarified historical events of Laos and the Vietnam’s Central region and showed the special solidarity between the two countries.


The seminar was organized by the Vietnam’s Party Central Committee Commission of Propaganda and Training; and Department of Information and Training of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee.
