City praises excellent tourist operators

The Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism held a ceremony to honor individuals and organizations that got high positions in the “National Skill Contest 2010-Cooking and Restaurant Service”.

23 units and 90 persons received certificates of merit from the city’s Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism.

On the occasion, the HCM City People’s Committee gave certificates of merit to 26 best organizations and people that have outstanding contribution to tourism skill contests.

The City People’s Committee also granted certificate of merit to deputy director of the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism La Quoc Khanh who was awarded the “Best destination operator” by the Tourism Promotion Organization for Asian Pacific Cities (TPO).

Excellent businessmen honoured in Hanoi

QĐND – Wednesday, May 05, 2010, 21:39 (GMT+7)

A ceremony was held in Hanoi on May 5 to announce the names of 200 outstanding businesspeople in the first phase of a programme to honour 1,000 businesspeople.

Among the rewardees recognized for their contribution to the country’s socio-economic development were Vo Sy Dong, General Director of the Vietnam Paper Corporation and Nguyen Ngoc Nam, Director of the Tien Giang Food Company.

The “Thang Long Intelligence” programme was launched by the Vietnam Association of Young Scientists and Engineers (VAYSE), the Vietnam Intellectual Property Association, and the Vietnam Culture and Information Jointstock Company to honour business people who have developed their businesses in a sustainable way with a high sense of responsibility for environemental protection and charity work.

In addition, there will be awards for 1,000 excellent enterprises and products. The list of the awardees will be announced in August.

Excellent northern students honored with award

The Hoa Trang Nguyen (Poinsettia Flower) Award for outstanding academic performance in 2008-09 was conferred on 852 high school students from 27 northern provinces and cities.

Of them, 65 were the toppers in university entrance exams and 15 won prizes at student Olympiads.

Scholarships to learn foreign languages were also awarded to many of the winners at the awards ceremony held in Hanoi on September 13.

President Nguyen Minh Triet, who graced the function, expressed delight at the winners’ achievements.

He exhorted them to overcome all challenges and ascend to the top of the knowledge ladder.

Studies must be accompanied by practice, knowledge at school must be connected with the needs of the society, and the methods of learning must be dynamic and creative, he said.

The Party and State have trust in the young generation’s ability to develop Vietnam into a more beautiful and prosperous country, he added.

The award is also set to be conferred on 195 others in the central region and 608 in southern provinces at similar ceremonies to be held later this month.

IPhO 2008 excellent students awarded

A ceremony to present awards to winners at the 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), hosted by Vietnam for the first time, was held in Hanoi on July 28.

The eight-day Olympiad saw 376 students from 82 countries and territories compete in theory and practice tests. Among them, 46 students won golds, 47 took silvers, 78 – bronzes and 87 others received certificates of merits.

Chinese student Longzhi Tan recorded the highest results with 44.6 marks out of the total 50 marks, including 20 marks for the practice test. He also bagged an award for the best result in the theory test.

A Taiwanese student, Yi-shu Wei, earned another award after obtaining the whole 20 marks for the practice test.

China and Taiwan led the competition with five golds, followed by the Republic of Korea , India , the US and Vietnam , each earned four golds.

Vietnam , with four golds and one bronze, recorded its best result at an international physics olympiad.

Addressing the award ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan congratulated the students after a tense competition.

He wished them to continue their efforts to become excellent scientists who will contribute their talents to the noble purposes, to their own countries’ development, and to the peace in the world.

IPhO Acting President Maija Ahtee expressed his thanks to the Vietnamese leaders for their coordination in successfully organising the 39th IPhO.

On behalf of the next IPhO organiser, Mexico , Prof. De Coss Gomez Romeo Humber, head of the Mexican delegation, congratulated Vietnam for its hosting the IPhO 2008, which, he said, would be an example for next events.

Mexico is scheduled to host the 40th IPhO in Merida city from July 12-19, 2009.-
