Tien Giang province opens socio-economic trade fair

QĐND – Monday, January 10, 2011, 20:44 (GMT+7)

A trade fair on the socio-economic achievements of My Tho city, Tien Giang province, opened on January 10 in Hung Vuong street of My Tho city.

The event attracted 200 showcases by 17 businesses from My Tho city and 70 other from Tien Giang and neighbouring provinces. 

Most of them displayed agricultural and industrial products and services under the campaign “Vietnamese people use Vietnamese goods”. 

Other programmes, such as presenting gifts for the poor and art performance will take place at the trade fair. 

The event will finish on January 16.

6kg baby sets birth weight record in Tien Giang

Doctor Dang Van Phuc, deputy director of the Go Cong Town General Hospital, the Mekong province of Tien Giang, said a woman gave birth to a 6kg-baby girl who is the heaviest weight ever recorded at the hospital on December 17.

This happened after a 20-minute surgery, which was successfully performed by Doctor Dang Van Phuc.

In 2006, Mother Tran Thi Phuong, 29, bore a son who weighed in at 4.2kg.

The newly born baby and the mother are healthy, said the doctor, and they will be staying at the hospital for observation for next four to five days. This is only precautionary measure, said the doctor, due to the weight of the child.

Ha Giang receives UNESCO certification on Dong Van Plateau

A ceremony to receive UNESCO recognition of Dong Van Stone Plateau as a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks (GGN) was held in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang on Dec. 1.

The ceremony of recognition of Dong Van Stone Plateau as a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks is organized in Ha Giang province on December 1.

The chief Representative of the UNESCO Office in Hanoi , Katherine Muller Marin and Secretary General of UNESCO Vietnam National Committee Pham Sanh Chau, handed over the UNESCO certificate to Ha Giang province.

Addressing the ceremony, Secretary General of UNESCO Vietnam National Committee Chau said that the success of Dong Van Stone Plateau Geological Park is the result of pure determination to create Vietnam ’s first geological park in Ha Giang.

Chau also highlighted the selection of a geological park development model by Ha Giang People’s Committee to eradicate hunger, reduce poverty and step up socio-economic development.

The plateau is Vietnam ’s first pilot model of a geological park for the future and this will promote Vietnam ’s image around the world, said Chau.

It will help eliminate hunger and reduce poverty for more than 250,000 local people on the plateau, he added.

Dong Van Stone Plateau was recognised as GGN member on October 3, 2010. The plateau has now become Vietnam ’s first geological park and only the second geological park in Southeast Asia, after the Langkawi Geological Park in Malaysia .

Dong Van, which has remained untouched for hundreds of millions of years, has mammoth rocks spread over the four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Meo Vac, and Dong Van, and is 1,000m above sea level.

The plateau is 80 percent limestone and has the fossils of thousands of species of prehistoric creatures from 400-600 million years ago.

It is also home to several cultures that have sprung up over the centuries. The 574 plateau now houses 250,000 people belonging to 17 different ethnic groups.

Prehistoric artefacts found in Ha Giang

Ancient artefacts, from a prehistorical culture dating back 4,000 – 7,000 years; have been discovered in a cave in the northern province of Ha Giang’s Bac Me District.

According to Trinh Nang Chung from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, head of the excavation team, two tombs have been excavated in the Khuoi Nang Cave.

Archaeologists said one of the tombs contained bone fragments and teeth from an adult, while the other had the remains of a child. The adult’s grave also contained stone tools.

In addition, Archaeologists have found hundreds of stone tools in the cave, including hatchets, hoes and knives, together with lots of ‘red stone powder’. It is believe that this red power is painted onto the corpse, so that the decease person reaches the ‘afterlife’.

Chung said that Khuoi Nang is the residence of prehistoric people, dating back 6,000-7,000 years ago.  Prehistoric human culture was in existence 10,000 years ago.

An Giang releases rare birds and snakes into forest

The Forest Management Department of the Mekong Delta Province of An Giang released 269 rare and valuable birds and more than 70 kilos of snakes into the Tra Su Indigo ecological forest in Tinh Bien District.

The local authorities have seized the animals and rare birds including laughing thrushes, starlings, orioles, magpies, parrots and more in Chau Phu District and Chau Doc Town.

The An Giang Forest Management Department has also cooperated with Long Xuyen City to organize two training courses on harmfulness of the red-eared turtles and methods to destroy them for more than 100 officials of local authorities, famer clubs, and pet shops’ owners.

Miss Huong Giang presents US $12,000 to the ”Dream of Thuy” Fund

Miss Tran Thi Huong Giang has handed over US $12,000 collected from the auction of the painting “Miss World Circle of Hands” (US $10,000) and donation from benefactors to “Dream of Thuy” Fund.

The sum will be used to build a new playground for children with cancer, being treated in the Ho Chi Minh City Tumor and Cancer Hospital.

The handover ceremony took place right after Miss Huong Giang received the crown and certificate of Miss Grand Slam Asia 2009 presented by Mr. Edwin Dominguez, a representative of Global Beauties Organisation on the evening of July 30th in Ho Chi Minh City.

Miss Huong Giang is the first Vietnamese beauty to win such a title from the Global Beauties Organisation.

The beauty of Vietnam has been also named the Smile Ambassador of the Operation Smile Organisation and the Strong-will Ambassador for “Dream of Thuy” Programme initiated by the Youth Newspaper.

Landslides kill two in Ha Giang

QĐND – Saturday, July 24, 2010, 21:35 (GMT+7)

Heavy downpour and flash floods on July 24 caused landslides and killed two local residents in the northern mountain province of Ha Giang.

At 09.00 am flash floods triggered a sudden fall of thousands of cubic metres of earth and rocks down the hill in Khuay Hao village, Yen Minh district. Earth and rocks reduced a house owned by Sinh Minh Sinh, a Mong ethnic local, to rubble and killed his three-year-old niece Sinh Thi Chinh. 

The district administration and Red Cross society dispatched rescue forces to the site and provided the Sinh with VND6 million in relief aid to help them stabilise life.

Three hours earlier, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds also caused a landslide in Na Tri commune, Xin Man district. Hundreds of earth and rocks fell down and flattened nurse Nguyen Thi Thu Hien’s house. The 26-year-old nurse died immediately.

District administration officials rushed to the site and instructed local rescue forces to deal with the aftermath of the natural calamity. The district and its Red Cross society provided VND3 million to Hien’s family to organise the memorial service for the unfortunate nurse.

Meanwhile, storm Chanthu, which weakened into a low pressure system on July 23, has dumped heavy rains of 232mm on the northern mountain province of Yen Bai. Torrential rains have caused flooding in 5 wards in Yen Bai city, a house in Hop Minh commune to collapse, and water levels in major rivers to swell up.

760 children in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces to get health check and gifts from Canon Vietnam

On July 3, Canon Vietnam Co., Ltd (CVN) joined the program of “Check heath and donate gifts for unprivileged children”- an annual program of the Bac Ninh provincial Communist Youth Union.

The first ever program will be implemented in Bac Giang provinces with co-operation of Bac Giang provincial Communist Youth Union (starting from July 23).

Following that, until July 30, 760 orphans, Agent Orange infected and unprivileged children of 6 communes from 6 districts of Bac Ninh and 4 communes from 4 districts of Bac Giang will be checked heath and donated gifts (each gift values at 115,000 VND).

This is the fourth time CVN join the program after the successful programs in 2007, 2008 and 2009 with 4,260 underprivileged children of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces were checked health and received gifts.

The program aims to create chance for underprivileged children who are unable to go and get health check at the hospitals to find out their abnormal conditions and sharing difficulty to them as well as their families.

Mr. Sachio Kageyama – General Director of CVN reaffirmed: “Canon is very happy to participate in social activities specially for the next generation. We want to express deep care toward children, especially who have less opportunity to take medical check. The Company also hopes that children will receive more cares from community as well as have studying and developmental opportunity to contribute to the development of the nation”.

In the upcoming time, CVN hopes to have more chances to co-operate with relevant organizations to help children, the future master of the country.

A representative from the Bac Ninh provincial Communist Youth Union said: “This meaningful activity expresses kindness and sincere help from Canon Vietnam, a company located in Bac Ninh province. We highly appreciate the cooperation between Canon Vietnam and Bac Ninh provincial Youth Union through years and the voluntary activity this year”.
