Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper wins at the city’s Press Award

Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper (SGGP) won the first prize in the category for Documentary, investigative report and reportage of the 28th Ho Chi Minh City Press Award for the investigative report titled, “Training PhD: Quality or Quantity?” by Linh An and Tien Dat.


Another investigative report titled, “Critics pan company proposal to rebuild HCMC children’s hospital,” by Tuong Lam of the SGGP took third place in the same category.


A series of reports titled, “Party and people: from theory to reality,” by the Department of Politics and Party Building of SGGP, took the A prize in the category for special reports, radio & TV programs.


The newspaper took the second and third prizes in the category for remarks and editorial for stories entitled, “Keeping a watchful eye on A/H1N1 influenza,” by Dao Tuan Anh and “Who is God” by Chien Dung.


SGGP also earned a second place prize and two third place prizes in the category for interviews, reports and notes for articles: “New day on Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago” by Minh Tu, “Incredible strange thing of a primary school with more than 100 classes” by Le Linh and “More than VND700 billion (US$35 million) invested in building a biological lake to improve Ba Bo canal” by Ai Van.


Meanwhile a photo report of Tuoi Tre Newspaper won the first prize of the category for photojournalism.


The HCM City Journalists’ Association will award 55 prizes in five categories at the 28th Ho Chi Minh City Press Award on June 21, the Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day.


Another press award highlighting national unity, jointly held by the HCMC Fatherland Front Committee and the municipal Journalists’ Association, will be launched from June 21 to October 1, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the National Front for the Unification of Vietnam (November 18, 1930).


Contestants should send their stories to the organizers at 55 Mac Dinh Chi Street and 14 Alexandre de Rhodes Street in District 1.

Sai Gon Giai Phong marks 35th anniversary with Legend Night

The opening of the 4-night Dem Huyen Thoai (Legend Night) gala marked the 35th anniversary of Sai Gon Giai Phong (Saigon Liberation) newspaper with a series of musical and artistic performances on May Day.

Through song and dance, the gala in Ho Chi Minh City tells the stories of Vietnam’s numerous wars of national defense, from early battles against northern invaders to the anti-colonial and imperialist wars against the French and Americans.
 
The performances are also being held to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi
 
The image of President Ho Chi Minh, who led the Vietnamese people on the path to achieving their historic victory on April 30, 1975, appears throughout the event
 
Over 300 singers, models and dancers are performing at the gala, which will play through May 4 at the Hoa Binh Theatre in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City.
 
Sai Gon Giai Phong was first published on May 5, 1975.

Ship collision causes oil spill outside Sai Gon port

Hundreds of tonnes of diesel oil (DO) spilled over Long Tau river in Ho Chi Minh City when two ships collided outside the Sai Gon port on Nov. 26 evening.

Tanker Gia Dinh-SG 4193 carrying 700 tonnes of DO was heading to Vung Tau when it clashed into ship Imextrans 16 with 1,800 tonnes of vegetable oil aboard travelling from the opposite direction.

The accident broke the tanker’s cargo hold No. 2, but ship Imextrans 16 reported no damage.

Rescue forces are trying to move the ships ashore and prevent the spread of spilled oil.-
