One more environmental prize to be granted communities

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on December 29 said that it will organize ‘Vietnam Environmental Protection Awards’ every two years, with three different kinds of awards for individuals, organizations and communities.

The Ministry held a closing ceremony, awarding environmental prizes in the period 2001-2010, and launched the Vietnam Environmental Awards for 2011 as well.


Over past ten years, 158 organizations and individuals have received environmental awards in five sectors, which include – education and training and environment communication; the reduction of environmental pollution, environmental restoration and improvement; application of information technology in environmental protection; state management on environmental protection; and finally, natural resources protection and conservation.


The number of individuals and organization registered for environmental protection awards is increasing every year.


From 2011, the sectors that will be chosen for awards will include – education and training and environment communication; application of information technology in environmental protection; reduction of environmental pollution, environmental restoration and improvement; preservation of diversified biology; and finally, coping with climate change and state management on environmental protection.

The Sai Gon-Mekong Co. Ltd has been granted the Global Good Agricultural Practice (GlobalGAP) accreditation for farmed aquaculture products and the International Food Standard (IFS) certificates.


Sai Gon-Mekong is Vietnam’s eighth enterprise to receive these accreditations. In addition, the US Chamber of Commerce has granted the enterprise a zero percent anti-dumping tax on tra fillet to the US market.


Sai Gon-Mekong company got the GlobalGAP for 15 ha of 30 ha of tra farming areas of the company in the southern city of Tra Vinh. Those farms have an output of 7,000 tonnes of products.


At present, Tra Vinh has about 100 ha of water surface along the Hau and Tien rivers for growing tra fish for exports, yielding an output of more than 16,000 tonnes with an export turnover of US$4 million.


The locality plans to expand its acreage for tra farming to 2,900 ha by 2015 and to 3,900 ha by 2020 with an output of 248,000 tonnes.

Over 1,000 scholarships granted to poor children

The Vietnam Children Sponsor Fund (VCSF) and Bao Viet Life Insurance Corporation (BVL) signed an agreement to grant over 1,000 “Bao Viet – Education Welfare” scholarships worth 900 million VND to disadvantaged children with good study results on August 5 in Hanoi.


In 2010, BVL raised the value of each scholarship to 700,000 VND from 500,000 VND. Since 2005, VCSF and BVL have helped about 6,000 outstanding students nationwide with nearly five billion VND in scholarship.


Starting 1994, VCSF has donated about 2,500 scholarships each worth 500,000 VND per pear.


Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan expressed belief that VCSF and BVL will continue to help poor children in their study.

First Vietnam tra fish company granted GAP certificate

The NTACO Joint Stock Company (NTACO) has received the Global Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) certificate, becoming the second seafood business and the first tra fish company in Vietnam to be awarded the certificate.


According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the Global GAP certificate was granted by the Dutch food standards agency, the CUC, to the company’s 30-ha farm in My Thoi Ward, Long Xuyen City in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang.


With this certificate, the value of NTACO’s products is expected to increase by over 15 percent and the company will have more opportunities to penetrate into strictly controlled markets.


In the first quarter of this year, NTACO’s export turnover reached 3.7 million USD, up 70 percent compared to the same period last year. At present, the company’s tra and basa fish products are sold to more than 40 countries and territories worldwide.

Vietnam Revolution Museum granted Ho Chi Minh Order

PANO – The Vietnam Revolution Museum, in cooperation with the National Committee for Borders, opened an exhibition on “Border work of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam” yesterday.


On this occasion, the museum received the Ho Chi Minh Order, the highest state award for individuals and organisations in Vietnam.


The exhibition showcased 300 exhibits, documents and images concerning the efforts of the Party, State and people to protect the national sovereignty.


It also highlighted the results of the demarcation between Vietnam and its neighbouring countries.


Especially, the exhibition showcased historic books and maps that dated back to 1834, legally establishing the sovereignty of Vietnam on islands and at sea.
