HCM City hosts 4th ornamental tree festival 2010

The fourth ornamental tree festival 2010 is being held in the Suoi Tien Tourist Area, Ho Chi Minh City from December 22 to January 3, 2011.

The annual festival showcases more than 5,000 exhibits of various varieties of ornamental trees and plants including bonsais, orchids and cacti.

More than 50 artisans along with some flower clubs and companies from across the country will participate.

Over 160 booths will display exotic ornamental plants varieties and some will also display ornamental birds, decorative fruit arrangements and rock garden displays. 

The highlights of the festival will be the bird singing competition, dog show and exquisite ornamental fish.

The festival is expected to attract a large number of visitors and will also be an opportunity for artisans to exchange and share information on the methods of caring and collecting ornamental plants.

50th NLF anniversary celebrated in HCM City

The 50th anniversary of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam was celebrated in HCM City on December 20 by the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF)’s Central Committee and the HCM City’s administration.


The celebration was attended by politburo member and member of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee’s Secretariat, Truong Tan Sang, former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, CPV Secretary and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, Ha Thi Khiet and President of the VFF’s Central Committee, Huynh Dam along with other Party and State leaders.


In his speech, Mr Dam recalled the establishment of the NLF, which marked a turning point in the southern revolution and was an indispensable part of the history and creativity of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh.


During the 15-year period from the NLF’s establishment to the 1975 Great Spring Victory, Vietnamese soldiers and people liberated all of south Vietnam for national unification, glorifying the national history, in which the NLF played a very important role.


The Vietnamese Party and State always praise the NLF’s significant contributions to national liberation, Mr Sang said.


He asked the VFF to uphold the NLF’s glorious tradition by diversifying activities, promoting patriotic emulation movements and encouraging all Vietnamese people to make more contributions to the cause of national construction and defence.


On the occasion, the Party and State presented the Order of Great Unity to 70 NLF former leaders and members of the Advisory Council of the provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam and the Alliance of National, Democratic and Peace Forces in recognition for their contributions to building the great national unity bloc, socialism and national defense.

HCM City takes lead in e-commerce

An international seminar on e-commerce took place in Ho Chi Minh City on December 16, attracting the participation of businesses, executives and lecturers in the country and abroad.


At the seminar, the first of its kind in Vietnam jointly held by the Viet Trung Hoa Investment and Development Joint Stock Company and Vietnam E-commerce Development Centre, participants discussed how to promote made-in-Vietnam products on international markets through e-commerce, while working on business strategies in line with global development trends.


The participants engaged in an exchange with Vietnamese businesses who are pioneers in applying e-commerce to business and with foreign experts to update information about e-commerce across the world.


The seminar also included direct talks with disabled people who have actively contributed to the development of society in general and to Vietnam’s information technology in particular, such as Le Dan Bach Viet MA, a blind teacher from Nguyen Dinh Chieu school for visually-impaired children, and Huynh Thi Kim Cuc, an IT expert.


Tran Vinh Nhung, Deputy Director of the HCM City Department of Industry and Trade, said businesses in HCM City are taking the lead in applying e-commerce, engaging in e-commerce trading floors and offering a wide range of online services.


However, Nhung said, they are facing numerous obstacles while using e-commerce, particularly regarding security and electronic payment systems.


The seminar provided an opportunity for participants to make suggestions to the HCM City People’s Committee on a plan to develop e-commerce in the 2011-2015 period.

HCM City plans US$135 mln for pre-schools in 5 years

Ho Chi Minh City plans to set aside about VND2,700 billion (US$135 million) for developing its pre-school system between now and 2015.

Under the plans, the city’s government will build 760 classrooms, and train thousands of teachers, both working and new ones.


The city will ensure that 100% of under-5 children to go to school with two class sessions a day by 2013.


Among them, the local authorities will allocate priority funds in the construction of six national standard kindergartens in rural areas including Ly Nhon Commune in Can Gio District, Nhon Duc in Nha Be, Tan Nhut in Binh Chanh, Xuan Thoi Thuong in Hoc Mon, Tan Thong Hoi and Thai My in Cu Chi; and other pre-schools in 12 wards in districts consisting of 4, 6, Phu Nhuan, Go Vap, Binh Tan, Tan Phu; and in industrial and export processing zones.


In addition, the city’s government also guides the Department of Education and Training to cooperate with the Labor Union in asking industrial and export processing zones to build kindergartens for workers’ children.

Vietnam Airlines to link HCM City with Beijing

Vietnam Airlines will open a new air route between Ho Chi Minh City and Beijing, China, starting on December 16.

The national carrier said it would operate three flights a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays using Airbus 321 aircraft.


Vietnam Airlines said that the two-way fare would be VND5.83 million (US$299) for booking between now and December 31. The fare can be changed depending on the exchange rate of Vietnam dong and US dollar, the corporation said.

Int’l real estate expo opens in HCM City

More than 50 international and Vietnamese market-leading groups and companies are showcasing their products at a Vietnam international real estate expo (Vietreal 2010) that opened in Ho Chi Minh City on Dec. 9.


On display at more than 300 booths are deluxe resort and tourism projects as well as projects calling for investment in the central coastal Da Nang city, the central provinces of Thua Thien-Hue and Ninh Thuan and the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong.


The four-day exhibition will also include a seminar on four topics: market, policy, opportunities and challenges to investors in the real estate sector.


The seminar will focus on a direct dialogue between the leaders of the Ministries of Construction and Finance and enterprises on how to create a strong jump for the real estate market and avoid risks from market price fluctuations.


General Secretary of the Vietnam National Real Estate Association (VNREA) Nguyen Van Minh said the exhibition was expected to help enterprises and customers gain useful and accurate information on Vietnam’s real estate projects and market.


VNREA will conduct the first-ever survey on accommodation demand in 2010 on this occasion, said Minh.

US young congressmen explore HCM City

A delegation of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) Council have expressed their keen interest in metro, belt road, monorail and other traffic infrastructure development projects in Ho Chi Minh City.


At a reception in HCM City on Nov. 22, Permanent Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Nguyen Thanh Tai, briefed the young US congressmen from Tennessee, Minnesota, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Washington D.C and Maine States of the city’s socio-economic development.


The delegation’s visit to Hanoi , Hue and HCM City has helped them better understand about Vietnam ’s country, people and culture, they said.
