Watercolor painting exhibition to be held to support poor people

An exhibition displaying nearly 50 pictures by Truong Han Minh, who is master traditional Chinese watercolor paintings in Vietnam, will be held at the Equatorial Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City from January 14 to 18.

The show entitled ‘Painter Truong Han Minh – 60 years of Passion in watercolor painting’ aims to celebrate the artist’s career and launch the website www.truonghanminh.com.


The sale of some of his paintings will be donated to support the poor people of Ho Chi Minh City.

An auction of some of his works last year raised over VND2 billion (US$100,000) and this money helped many disabled children in Vietnam.


Truong Han Minh was born in 1951 in Cho Lon, HCM city. He original came from Guan Dong, in China. He has had a passion for painting since early childhood. Truong Han Minh is also Chairperson of the Chinese Fine Arts Association and a member of Vietnamese Fine Arts Association. He has taught at many Art schools in the city.


His paintings have been displayed at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum; Ho Chi Minh City Museum; Museum of the Nationalities in Vietnam; and in many other countries such as the U.S., France, Australia, Canada, Japan, China and Taiwan.

11th National Party Congress preparation session held in Hanoi

A preparation session for the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam was held in Hanoi on January 11.


Delegates elected a Presidium of 24 members. A secretariat of five was elected headed by Ngo Van Du, member of the Party’s Central Committee secretariat, Head of the Central Committee’s Office. Nguyen Van Chi, Politburo member, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Inspection was also elected head of a 12-member committee for the verification of delegates’ qualifications.


At the session, the agenda for the Congress got a 100 percent approval. Accordingly, the Congress will discuss and adopt a political platform for the transitional period to socialism in Vietnam (revised and supplemented in 2011) and the nation’s socio-economic development strategy for the 2011-2020 period. The Congress will also hear the political report of the Party’s Central Committee (10th tenure) to review the implementation of the mission in the last five years and draw up a direction for the next five years. In addition, it will propose a supplement of the Party’s regulations and elect a Central Committee for the next term.


On behalf of the Presidium, Ho Duc Viet, Politburo member, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Organisation and Personnel, introduced the election regulations.


According to the committee for the verification of delegates’ qualifications, the Congress, themed “Continuing the Party’s leadership and fighting capacity, upholding national strength, comprehensively spurring the renovation, and laying the foundations for Vietnam to become a modern industrial country by 2020” will be attended by 1.377 delegates, representing 3.6 million Party members nationwide.

International seminar on amateur music to be held in city

An international seminar on don ca tai tu (southern amateur music) and its impromptu harmony will be held in Ho Chi Minh City on January 9-11, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism.

The event is part of the project on southern music submitted to UNESCO for recognition as an intangible part of the Vietnamese cultural heritage.


Local traditional music researchers, administrators, musicians, don ca tai tu artisans, together with music experts from France, Germany, Cyprus, Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Singapore will join the seminar.


The Ministry, the Vietnam Music Institute and Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism, have jointly organized the event.

Music performance, “Spring for needy Children”, to be held in Hanoi

The Vietnam Children Protection Fund, the Oxy Communications Joint-Stock Company and Vietnam Television, will hold a charity musical program for poor children entitled “The spring for needy children”, on Sunday evening at the Kim Ma Theatre, Hanoi.


Through the event, the Fund wants to call for more donations from individuals and organisations at home and abroad to support disadvantaged and needy children in Vietnam.


On this occasion, representatives of the Party and Government will grant 25 gifts to 25 poor and disadvantaged children in Hoa Binh, Bac Can and Quang Binh provinces. The Fund also receives VND 33 billion relief aid from 20 agencies, businesses and individuals at home and abroad.


Famous singers, Tung Duong, Khanh Linh, Minh Quan and Phuong Anh will entertain audience with many songs expressing their deep love and concern for disadvantaged children.

First Forestry Festival to be held in Vietnam

Vietnam’s first timber and forest product festival will be held in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh province from March 26-29.


So far 12 provinces and cities, 125 businesses planning 350 stalls, consulates and businesses from the Netherlands, the UK, France, Japan, China and Russia as well as other international organisations have all registered to take part in the event.


The information was released at a press briefing in Quy Nhon City on December 20 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, the Binh Dinh provincial People’s Committee and the Dat Vo Media and Advertising Company.  


During the festival, there will be a Vietnamese timber and forest product exhibition, a Vietnamese ornamental plant festival, two seminars on forestry, trade promotion activities, and a ceremony to honour outstanding people in the forestry sector and present forestry Guinness records. There will also be outdoor art performances, a cultural and cuisine festival, a drawing contest, a photo exhibition on forest protection, and a badminton tournament for timber and forest product businesses.


Vietnam earned US$310 million from timber exports in November 2010, up 29.56 percent against November 2009, and bringing the total export value in 11 months to more than US$3 billion.

“Dvorak Night” concert to be held in Hanoi

The concert, “Dvorak Night”, will take place at the Hanoi Opera House at 8pm tonight and tomorrow evening to introduce some Cello Concerto pieces of the famous Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak.


Artist Ngo Hoang Quan, Director of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, the best Cello Vietnamese artist, who has known for performing successfully the Dvorak’s works in Moscow, Japan, Macedonia, Germany and Thailand, will present his Cello Concerto in the first of the concerts.


In second part, the Orchestra will perform the Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony. This work, and his Ninth Symphony, are Dvorak’s most salient successes and also are known as the two best symphonies of the 19th century by many experts.


The “Dvorak Night” will be under the baton of the famous Japanese conductor Honna Tetsuji.

Competition to create games held among junior students

A competition has been held for junior students in the country to develop students’ creativity, announced the Pioneer Teenager newspaper’s representatives at a press briefing on Monday.

A traditional game strengthens collective spirit

The competition to create games involved in groups of students is held by the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (the Pioneer Teenager newspaper), the Department of Students’ Affairs under the Ministry of Education and Training and the Swiss’s Sugus sweets.


Participants will draw their own ideas of the games on paper. These most interesting games of the final round will be played in 74 schools in the country to find out the best ones.


Vu Quang Vinh, Editor –in –chief of the Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper, said students can create new games or change available games to suit teenagers of the same ages and psychology at present. These games with building team or group work and collective spirit will be highly praised.


The total prizes for individuals and collectives will be up to VND400 million. However, the most valuable prize, according to the organizers, is that more interesting games will be enjoyed by students in break times or after strained studying hours.

On December 9th, the Vietnam Advertising Festival 2010 will take place at the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden, 2B Nguyen Binh Khiem Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.


During the three-day festival, the public can see the best advertising works worldwide, the most impressive advertising campaigns from the Cannes Lions Festival 2010, works awarded at the Spikes Asia Festival 2010, and finalists at the Vietnam Young Lions 2011.


There will also a seminar, “Our digital future”, to be held on December 10th, with participation of a representative from AC Neilsen to share experiences on studying markets in the digital world.

Central Highland cuisine festival held in Kon Tum

PANO – A cuisine contest with the participation of 9 teams of Central Highland ethnic minorities was held during the ongoing Culture and Sport Festival of Kon Tum Ethnic Minority Groups 2010 in Kon Tum City.


At the competition, the teams introduced their traditional and unique dishes, which they often cook in their traditional festivals, like rice harvesting and buffalo baiting.


The uniqueness of their traditional dishes rests on the ingredients, including herbs and spices, which come only from the Central Highland mountains and forests.


According to local officials, the traditional cuisines of Central Highland ethnic minorities could be a potential for local tourism development.

PANO – A job fair, one of main programs during the France Culture Week in Vietnam, will be held on November 27th at the International Exbibition Centre in Hanoi.


A press conference has been held on November 23rd at the France Culture Centre by the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Vietnam (CCIFV) to annouce the coming event.


With the participation of big businesses such as Big C, Vietnam Satellite Digital Television (VSTV), Prudential, Habubank and CCIFV, the fair will focus on jobs and education.


The event will create favourable conditions for leaders and employers of businesses to look for good employees.


There will be nearly 200 avaiable jobs in fields of banking and finance for participants.
