Outstanding groups and individuals for AO victims to be honoured

PANO – 99 outstanding groups and individuals from movements and campaigns in support of more than 3 million Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO) victims will be honoured at the program, “Gratitude to Golden Hearts to AO Victims”, to be on air at 08.00pm, on January 24th, 2011, on Vietnam Television’s S9 studio.


Among the honoured selected by the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA) and its branches in cities and provinces nationwide, are General Vo Nguyen Giap and the late Professor Tran Van Giau.


Addressing a recent press conference in Hanoi, Senior – General Nguyen Van Rinh, Chairman of the VAVA, said the program will be a great encouragement to millions of AO victims and their families as well as organisations and individuals at home and abroad to continue their support to the victims.


According to Colonel Le Cuong, a member of the organizing board, it was not easy to select outstanding figures as thousands of local and foreign groups and individuals have been actively engaged in movements and campaigns supporting Vietnamese AO victims.


The program will be broadcast live on VTV and VTC channels, local TV channels of HCMC, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Lam Dong and Lao Cai provinces. The event is jointly organised by the VAVA, the Southeast Asian Research Association of Vietnam (SEARAV), the People’s Police Newspaper, the ASEAN magazine, and the ASEAN C&C Company.

Tea producers honoured at Lam Dong Tea Festival

A ceremony to honour tea producers was the highlight of the opening ceremony of the third Lam Dong Tea Festival 2010 in Lam Dong Province on December 25.

45 tea producers and processers spanning five generations were honoured at the opening ceremony. The festival had the highland town of Bao Loc pulsating with activity. There was a procession of flower-decked cars, a tea picking contest, an exhibition and a science seminar.


The event will organize a program to announce B’lao tea brand.

The organizers expected the event would encourage the tea industry of Vietnam and Lam Dong in particular to produce higher quality tea for export and also improve the living conditions of tea-producers.

The festival is on till December 27.

Ao dai to be honoured at Hanoi’s grand anniversary

A magnificent ao dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) exhibition will take place in Hanoi on the evening of Oct. 1, kicking off the festival of the grand millennial anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.


Collections of ao dai from northern, central and southern regions of Vietnam will be performed by both professional and amateur models.


The 45-minute performance, which will be broadcast live on television, will be followed by a 15-minute light and fireworks displays.


As part of activities to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, the People’s Committee of the northern province of Bac Ninh and the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha will inaugurate the great Buddha statute on the Phat Tich mountain peak on Sept. 25.


The statue, which 27m in height and weighs 3,000 tonnes, is one of the biggest stone statues in Southeast Asia .


The provincial library of Thanh Hoa province on Sept. 23 announced a collection of Sino-Vietnamese written documents introducing people who have a close connection to the history of Thang Long-Hanoi.


The library inaugurated a reading room that offers 500 books on Thang Long-Hanoi.

145 laureates honoured

The 120 top university graduates and the 25 students who recorded the highest grades on their university entrance exams were honoured at a programme held in Hanoi on August 15.


57 of the 120 laureates were party members who overcame difficulties during their academic years, won high prizes in national and international contests and devised ways to apply new scientific and technological advances in the cause of the city and national construction.


Addressing the programme, Pham Quang Nghi, Politbureau member and Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee, congratulated the laureates on their outstanding achievements, declaring that their achievements were admirable and they are the pride of their families, schools and the capital city. The top university graduates were urged to continue their efforts in the future to create a civilized and prosperous country.


He added that Hanoi is always willing to welcome the laureates’ contributions to the city.

1,000 outstanding farmers honoured

1,000 outstanding farmers honoured

Around 1,000 outstanding farmers were honoured for their achievements in production activities on August 14 by the Hanoi Farmers Association.


They excelled in the rural modernization programme and in building a strong Farmers Association.


They were also honoured for their patriotism for the country, diligence, intelligence and creativity. They improved their own households and helped many others escape poverty, raise incomes, and maintain social order in localities.


Most notably, Mr Nguyen Van Trung, a farmer with disabilities in Phu Nghia commune, Chuong My district has overcome his difficulties to become a manager of a rattan and bamboo export enterprise which generates more than 100 jobs for local people.


According to the Hanoi Farmers Association, over the past five years, grassroots-level emulation movements have contributed to establishing many highly efficient agricultural areas that spur the local economy and reduce the number of poor households.

The News for Foreign Service Department of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has received the State’s Independence Order, third class, in recognition of its contributions to the country’s foreign news services.


At a ceremony to receive the Order in Hanoi on August 5, VNA Director General Tran Mai Huong affirmed that news for foreign services is always the foundation of VNA.


He stressed that in the transition from a traditional newswire agency to a powerful national communications group to meet news requirements in the new circumstance, VNA seeks to develop a variety of news products, including news for foreign services.


The VNA leader noted that the News for Foreign Service Department’s 65-year tradition, and especially contributions by its older generations, always serves as a fulcrum for its younger staff to further raise their sense of responsibility to and quality of the news they publish.


On the VNA’s founding day (September 15, 1945), the News for Foreign Service Department also made its first debut with the publication of the country’s Declaration of Independence in English and French languages.


During the two resistance wars against French colonialists and American aggressors, the News for Foreign Service Department played a key role in keeping foreign readers updated with developments of the wars.


It is noteworthy that that during the Vietnam War, the department’s English, French, and then Spanish bulletins greatly helped foreign readers and friends gain good understanding of the situation in Vietnam and the Vietnamese people’s just war.


When Vietnam entered a new phase of renovation and international integration, the News for Foreign Service Department has proved itself as one of mainstream and key foreign news channels to bridge the country with others around the world.


The department has exchanged news in English, French and Spanish with foreign news agencies partnered with VNA. Especially, its English bulletin is provided for the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry, the NNN website of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Oorganisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA).


Apart from English, French and Spanish bulletins, the Department plans to launch its own Chinese bulletin on the occasion of VNA’s 65 th founding anniversary.


Everyday, news in English, French and Spanish are updated on VNA’s official website, Vietnamplus, to disseminate current events in Vietnam as well as the country’s viewpoints on regional and international issues.

UNODC former chief representative honoured

The Committee for Ethnic Minorities has presented an insignia for the cause of ethnic minority group development to Jason William John Eligh, former acting chief representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).


The insignia presentation has been made in recognition of Jason Eligh’s great contributions to preventing and controlling drug abuse and the HIV epidemic among Vietnam’s ethnic people.


Jason Eligh and his colleagues joined domestic and international organisations and local authorities to prevent drug use and the spread of HIV in ethnic-inhabited regions through disseminating information and educating local people to raise their awareness on the issue. They have also built a typical community-based rehabilitation model at the Muong Hum commune, Bat Xat district of the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.


The Committee also hailed UNODC’s important role and contributions to Vietnam’s drug prevention and control. Thanks to the UN body’s financial and technical assistance, the Vietnamese Government’s anti-drug programme has accessed international information and experiences and successfully organised effective and synchronous activities.


Addressing the presentation ceremony in Hanoi on August 2, Jason Eligh said he was happy to receive the honourable award and thanked the Vietnamese partners for their assistance.


He said he wished to make further contributions to the development of Vietnam’s ethnic people.
