Competition to create games held among junior students

A competition has been held for junior students in the country to develop students’ creativity, announced the Pioneer Teenager newspaper’s representatives at a press briefing on Monday.

A traditional game strengthens collective spirit

The competition to create games involved in groups of students is held by the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (the Pioneer Teenager newspaper), the Department of Students’ Affairs under the Ministry of Education and Training and the Swiss’s Sugus sweets.


Participants will draw their own ideas of the games on paper. These most interesting games of the final round will be played in 74 schools in the country to find out the best ones.


Vu Quang Vinh, Editor –in –chief of the Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper, said students can create new games or change available games to suit teenagers of the same ages and psychology at present. These games with building team or group work and collective spirit will be highly praised.


The total prizes for individuals and collectives will be up to VND400 million. However, the most valuable prize, according to the organizers, is that more interesting games will be enjoyed by students in break times or after strained studying hours.

National junior wushu champs opens in Hanoi

Close to 300 martial artists from 24 cities and provinces throughout the country are competing at the National Junior Wushu Championships, which opened in Hanoi on July 31.


The athletes are contending for 78 sets of medals in Taolu (performance) and Sanshou (combat) events.


In Taolu events, the athletes are divided into three age groups: 17-18, 12-16 and under 12 years old, while those competing in Sanshou events are separated into 17-18 and 15-16 year-old groups.


Organisers said with more than 30 talented martial artists, the Hanoi team is considered the favourite at this year’s tournament and Ho Chi Minh City’s squad is expected to take second place.


The championships will run until August 6.

Asian Junior Athletics Championship to be held

PANO – The 14th Asian Junior Athletics Tournament will be launched from July 1st to 4th at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.


The coming event will draw the participation of 435 athletes under 20 years old, from 37 countries and territories. They will compete at the 44 events: half for men’s singles and half for women’s singles.


This is the first time that Vietnam will host a continent-wide sports event and it is a good opportunity for domestic athletes to exchange and learn experiences from foreign competitors, as well as for Vietnam to promote the country’s beauty and its people to international friends.


Vietnamese athletes set targets to win medals in women’s jumping and 400 meter hurdle.

Vietnam to join world junior taekwondo championships

Six Vietnamese teakwondo athletes will take part in the 8th WTF World Junior Taekwondo Championships which will be held in Tiajuana, Mexico from March 6-9.


The tournament draws the participation of more than 750 athletes from 85 countries and territories. Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia are the representatives from Southeast Asian region.


At the tournament, Vietnam features six athletes including Mai Tan Phat (men’s 48 kg category), Nguyen Quoc Cuong (men’s 55kg), To Minh Nhat (men’s 63 kg), Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang (women’s 44 kg), Doan Thi Huong Giang (women’s 49kg) and Nguyen Thanh Thao (women’s 55 kg). 


Before the World Junior Championships, the Vietnamese athletes will participate in the WTF Qualification Tournament for 2010 Youth Olympic Games, also held in Mexico from March 3-4.

Vietnamese tennis athlete snags two junior cup titles

Vietnam’s Huynh Phuong Dai Trang swept the women’s singles and doubles titles at Vietnam International Junior Tennis Championship Techcombank Cup.


Trang, 16, beat Russian fourth seed Anna Tyulpa 6-1, 6-2 to win the singles title at Quan Hoa tennis court in Hanoi on Oct. 17.


The 16-year-old dominated Tyulpa in the first set with powerful serves and backhands, winning in 21 minutes.


Tyulpa regrouped to lead the first game of the second set but was overtaken by hard shots to the corners by Trang, the tournament’s top seed, who cruised home 6-2 in 27 minutes.


In the doubles title final, HCM City products Trang and Nguyen Ai Ngoc Van beat Tyulpa and fellow Russian Kristina Chasovskikh, 7-6 (3), 7-5.


In the men’s side, teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien and partner Leander Lazaro of the Philippines beat Tefan Milenkovic and Oskar Wikberg from Sweden, 7-5; 6-3.


Earlier, Wikberg won the men’s singles title when he beat countryman Stefan Lindmark.
Thien, 14, played below his potential in the singles to be defeated 4-6; 4-6 by Wikberg in the semi-final.
