The awards were held by the Vietnam Cinema Association, with participation of Deputy President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy National Assembly Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, and many other esteemed artists.

“Dung dot” took top honors in several other categories. Mr. Minh won for Best Director while the film’s Minh Huong won for Best Lead Actress. The movie also won the prize for audience favorite.

“Dung dot” is the inspiring true story of a Vietnamese female doctor named Dang Thuy Tram who worked during the Vietnam War. The idealistic physician was just 27 when she was shot dead by US forces in southern Quang Ngai Province in 1970.

Tram’s diary was recovered and kept for over 35 years by a US soldier before it was returned to Vietnam in 2005. The diary offers a human face to a war that is rarely talked about by those who lived through it. It became especially popular amongst a younger generation who had learned little more than the bare facts of the war in school.

“Dung dot” was released in Vietnam on April 30, 2009.

Other winners at the 2010 Canh Dieu Vang festival included:
– Best Scriptwriter: Nguyen Trong Khoa for “14 ngay phep” (14 days)
– Best Sound Editing: People’s Artist Banh Bac Hai for “Dung dot” (Don’t burn)
– Best New Actress: Bao Thu for “Cong chua teen va ngu ho tuong” (Teenage girl and five bodyguards)
– Best Actor: Trinh Hoi for “14 ngay phep” (14 days)
– Best Actress: Minh Huong for “Dung dot” (Don’t burn)
