Laos and the Philippines qualify for AFF Cup


QĐND – Wednesday, October 27, 2010, 20:41 (GMT+7)

PANO – The national football teams of Laos and the Philippines will take part in the coming ASEAN Football Championship, The AFF-Suzuky Cup, after defeating Cambodia and East Timor, respectively, at the qualifying round, according to the Vietnam Football Federation.


The Laotian team will play against Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia in group A while the Cambodian team will compete with Vietnam, Singapore and Myanmar in group B.


The coming tournament, taking place in Indonesia and Vietnam from December 1st to 29th, is expected to attract a lot of spectators and fans in ASEAN.


* The Vietnamese team is training hard for the tournament, despite some key players having some injuries.


To prepare for the tournament, the team will take part in the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Cup from November 2nd to 6th with teams from the Republic of Korea, The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Singapore.

HCM City voluntary youth enjoys “Pink holiday” in Laos and Cambodia

The 9th voluntary campaign titled “Pink holiday,” which began July 29 and will run until August 11 in Laos and Cambodia, has attracted more than 100 young people including students, doctors and workers of Ho Chi Minh City.

In Attapeu Province of Laos, the youth volunteer delegation offered 10 computers to the provincial youth union; 200 gifts to disadvantaged students; 2,100 gifts and provided free medicine and medical examination and treatment to the poor people in Sanxay, Saxettha, Phuvong and Sanamxay districts.


The delegation also built two houses worth VND30 million (US$1,500), for the poorest families in Sanxay District.


Volunteers gave 1,400 gifts and provided free medicine, medical examinations and treatment to people in Dak Chung and Laman districts of Sekong Province.


300 poor students and 1,500 people in Paksong, Pathumphon and Muong Khoong districts of Champasak Province received gifts, free medicine, medical examinations and treatment.


The volunteers also cooperated with their comrades of the “Green Summer Campaign” to build two houses for families in Pathumphon District.


The youth volunteer delegation shared their knowledge of cultivating rubber, rice, vegetables; opened computer classes, built fresh water supply systems, and provided safety instructions on the use of electricity to the people in provinces.


The delegation left Laos on August 8, to continue their voluntary activities in Rattana Kiri and Kongpong Cham of Cambodia.

Vietnamese youth volunteers visit remote areas of Laos

36 youth volunteers including doctors of the “Pink holiday” and students of the “Green Summer Voluntary Campaign” overcame many difficulties to visit the K’Tu people in the remote commune of Ta Lang Ta, in Sekong Province’s Dak Chung District of Laos from August 2 to 4.

The Ta Lang Ta commune is located along the Laos-Vietnam border, on the Truong Son range, 1,600 meters above sea level.

The youth volunteer delegation spent nearly one day traveling in six pick-up trucks to cross the difficult to access mountainous area, full of obstacles, with bendy roads, thick forest, abysses and 45-degree slopes.

They spent a night in all-terrain vehicles in a cemetery of the K’Tu people and were exhausted from the long hard trip.

They also tried to take cars, which got bogged down on the muddy road during the trip.

At last they arrived at the commune set in a green valley, along a fresh stream.

The delegation offered gifs to 1,200 K’Tu people in the Ta Lang Ta, Tang Doi, Tang Tun, Tang Ka Lo, Dak Lay and A Jun communes, in Dak Chung District.

Vietnam, Laos boost social science research cooperation

The Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) will help the Lao National Social Science Institute improve its researchers’ capability for the 2011-2015 period.


The agreement to the effect was signed between the two institutes on August 13 under which both sides will conduct joint research and exchange experiences on theoretical and practical issues of their national development and international integration, their research results and related information.


Vietnam will help train researchers for the Lao institute as well as finance short-term study tours for six Lao researchers at the VASS.


The VASS has joined the Lao counterpart in six research projects, which cover the building and development of democracy in Laos, Lao social development, the globalisation impact on the Lao society and the study of the Mong ethnic group on the common border. The academy has also participated in compiling a book on the Vietnam-Laos history and the Vietnam-Laos social science dictionary.

Thang Long-Hanoi exhibition opens in Laos

An exhibition to mark one thousand years of Thang Long-Hanoi opened in Vientiane, Laos, on August 2, helping the Lao people and the Vietnamese community in the country better understand Hanoi’s 1,000-year history.

The one-month exhibition presents more than 100 documentary photos from almost 2 million documentary items archived at the Vietnam National Library and other libraries nationwide.


The photos feature landscapes and interesting places in Hanoi as well as the capital city’s streets and life in early the 20 th century and at present, showing city images in different periods as well as emphasising cultural and spiritual values and the achievements of Hanoi.

Volunteers in Laos celebrate Hanoi’s millennial anniversary

The Young Volunteer’s Green Summer Campaign 2010 launched by Hanoi’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in Hatsaiphong district, Vientiane, Laos from July 19-24 has concluded successfully.


Nguyen Hong Dan, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Union and Chairman of the Hanoi Youth Association, said that the campaign aimed to promote friendship between Hanoi and Vientiane Youth Unions and mark the 1,000 anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.


The campaign provided free health check-ups and medicines for 1,000 people and presented gifts to beneficiary and disadvantaged families. The Hanoi Union and the Vientiane Union built a club for Phothon school, a joint project between the two capitals to celebrate Hanoi’s millennial anniversary.


The Hanoi Union took part in cultural and sports activities and exchanged experiences with the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union.


This is the fourth successive year that the Hanoi Union has organised voluntary activities in Vientiane.

Vietnamese soldiers’ remains return from Laos, Cambodia

The remains of 29 Vietnamese voluntary soldiers who died in Laos and Cambodia during the war have been repatriated after a six-month search.


The search was conducted by a team under the Kon Tum Military Command.


A memorial service was held yesterday at the Ngoc Hoi District Martyrs Cemetery in the Central Highland province of Kon Tum with the participation of provincial authorities, representatives from the Sekong, Attapeu and Champasak provinces of Laos, and Ratanakiri Province of Cambodia along with local armed forces and the public.


The day before, a solemn ceremony had been held in Laos to mark the departure of the remains of the Vietnamese soldiers to Viet Nam.
