55th anniversary of Hanoi liberation

QĐND – Friday, October 09, 2009, 20:43 (GMT+7)

October 10, 1954, marks the collapse of French colonialism in Indochina and the Vietnamese people’s glorious victory over it, which opened a new era for the capital city of Hanoi and the country.

A solemn ceremony to celebrate Hanoi’s Liberation Day was held in the city on October 9 in the presence of senior officials such as National Assembly President Nguyen Phu Trong, State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, and Head of the Central Commission for Communication and Education To Huy Rua.

Addressing the event, Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen The Thao recalled the past struggle of the city’s inhabitants and the revolutionary army against the French colonialists.

When Hanoi was freed from the French occupiers on October 10, 1954, following the Dien Bien Phu victory, it was just a decaying city with a poor, backward economy, Mr Thao said. But it has now become a huge economic and political centre, a heroic city for peace, he added.

Ceremony speakers praised the outstanding individuals, groups and families who have contributed to the city’s development. This is an annual event that has been held now for 17 years.

During the ceremony, Mr Thao launched an emulation campaign to run until the grand 1000th anniversary of Hanoi next year.
