VN-Index closes week in low note

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index dropped for the third day on December 24 due to bad news and a lack of support from foreign investors as they stopped trading for the holidays.

Standard & Poor’s downgraded credit rating of Vietnam and some credit institutions in the country. Besides, the Vinashin’s debt of US$60 million had not been resolved.


The measure of 274 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange declined 0.56 percent, or 2.65 points, to close at 472.76 points.


On the index, 89 stocks raised, 120 fell, while 71 were unchanged.


Trading volume significantly reduced over the previous trading session. Around 55.81 million shares changed hands at a value of VND1.35 trillion.


Investment and Trading of Real Estate Joint Stock Company (ITC) topped the list of most active shares in volume with 2.55 million shares.


It was followed by Tan Tao Investment Industry Corporation (ITA) with 2.28 million shares traded.


Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) tagged along with 2.2 million shares.


Petroleum Industrial & Civil Construction Joint Stock Company (PXI) marched south for three straight trading sessions, slumping 11.18 percent to VND15,100. The company will pay dividends to its current shareholders at a ratio of 16 percent on January 10, 2011.


Sieu Thanh Joint Stock Corporation (ST8) shrank 5 percent to trade at VND22,800.


Imexpharm Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company (IMP) contracted 4.8 percent to VND59,500.


Ben Tre Aquaproduct Import and Export Joint Stock Company (ABT) and Cadovimex Seafood Import-Export and Processing Joint Stock Company (CAD) both accelerated 5 percent to VND42,000, and VND8,400 respectively.


Long Hau Corporation (LHG) climbed the second day, escalating 4.95 percent to VND42,400.


House Viet Nam Joint Stock Company (NVN) strengthened 4.93 percent to VND21,300.


The smaller bourse in the north also wrapped week in red as the Hanoi’s HNX-Index tripped 0.03 percent, or 0.03 points, to close at 111.19 points. Trading volume sank by 24 percent in volume and 30 percent in value over the previous day as 30.9 million shares worth VND592.8 billion were traded.


Meanwhile, the UPCom-Index slightly reversed 0.09 points to 41.16 points this morning. A total of 150,000 shares changed hands at a value of VND1.9 billion as of 11:15 am local time.

Low quality drugs recalled

The Vietnam Drug Administration on January 3 announced a ban on the sale and use of the two lots of medications, Bocefac and Methotrexat Ebewe. This is because both drugs have failed to meet legal requirements.

Methotrexat Ebewe

The banned drugs are Bocefac dry syrup, which code is 22709001, with the expiry date of September 6, 2012. This drug was produced by the Boram Pharm Company Limited, Korea and imported into Vietnam by Quang Nam Pharmaceutical and Medical Materials Company.


The medication failed to satisfy the requirements of content. It is used for the treatment of ear, nose, throat, the respiratory tract, the urinary tract and skin infections caused by bacteria.


Vietnam Drug Administration also prohibited sales of Methotrexat Ebewe (for injection), used to treat cancer or severe diseases, caused by an overactive immune system. This is because it failed to meet the legal requirements.


This medication code is 93364804, 93364806, 93364808, 95598706, 95199210, and the registration number is VN-5351-10. The drugs do not have a clear induction of manufacturing and no expiry date. Ebewe Pharma Ges.m.b.H.Nfg.KG manufactures the drugs in Austria.

Many countries commit to helping Vietnam in developing low carbon economy

Northern Europe countries and Japan had undertaken to choose Vietnam to pilot the programs to develop low carbon economy, the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said at a press conference on December 14.

Norway pledged a support package of US$100 million for the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation program (REDD) of Vietnam.


Besides, the meeting between high officials in agriculture, food security and climate changes and the chairman of World Bank, Prime Minister of Thailand, and the US Agriculture minister had raised $4.5 billion for REDD program and $6.5 billion for the climate change funds.


The press conference was held to report the activities of Vietnamese delegation at the sixteenth Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Cancun, Mexico, from November 29 to December 10.

Warning as tropical low nears


QĐND – Tuesday, December 14, 2010, 20:18 (GMT+7)

A low tropical pressure formed to the west of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rains to coastal provinces from Quang Ngai to Ca Mau and Kien Giang, according to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecast Centre.


The pressure is moving towards west at a speed of between 5-10kph, 110km east of Ninh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces at 7am on Dec. 14 with wind gust of 39-49kph.


The National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control has instructed flood and storm prevention and control departments at coastal provinces from Quang Ngai to Ca Mau, Kien Giang and relevant ministries and agencies to take measures to prepare for the low pressure.


They were required to audit at sea vessels and inform owners of boats operating offshore of any dangerous developments in the low pressure.


They were also instructed to maintain rescue forces on high alert and keep close watch over the progress of the low pressure and maintain contact with off-shore vessels.


The forecast centre said a cold spell is forecast to hit the northern region on Dec. 14 and bring heavy showers to the northern and north-central regions.


The mountainous province of Lao Cai in particular will experience a temperature of between 11-13 degrees Celsius while temperatures in the town of Sa Pa town are expected to drop to between 2-4 degrees Celsius.


The centre also warned of a high risk of ice and snow along Sapa’s O Quy Ho mountain pass in the next few days.

Low pressure areas formed off the Pacific Coast

Two low pressure areas have been formed off the Pacific Coast in October 21, said the National Hydrometeorological Forecast Center.

The first low pressure area was located at 17.10 degrees north latitude and 142.25 degrees east longitude, and moved to the West-northwest in the evening.

The second low pressure area was found at 19.9 degrees north latitude and 158.8 degrees east longitude and moved to the Northwest.

Their wind speed was about 20-30 kph. They can develop into a typhoon and will hit the Philippines in next few days.

The super typhoon Megi is around 670km to the Northeast of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa Archipelago (Paracel Islands) with gusts over 220 kph.

It will go deep into the mainland of Guangdong Province in China on October 22.

The country presently sees a dry weather in three regions.
