Islanders in Ly Son reap good profits

QĐND – Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 20:55 (GMT+7)

Thousands of local people in Ly Son district, Quang Ngai province, have earned much money from fishing anchovies and growing garlic.

Good haul of fish

Early in the morning, Ly Son port becomes so busy. Here and there people are trading things. Coracles full of anchovies are moving in and out of the port.

Le Van My, aged 45 of Tay Hamlet, An Vinh Commune, joyfully said, never before had they caught so much anchovy. On average, each coracle fishes 150-200 kg of anchovy per day, while high-capacity boats easily caught tones of anchovies.

Normally, the anchovy crop begins in February or March of Lunar calendar, and fishermen have harvested big crops of the fish over the last few weeks. Local people go fishing at 3 a.m. and their small boats are full of fish at 6 a.m.

“The weather has been fine this year, anchovies gather in large amounts, so what fishermen need is to light up and catch it easily”, said Nguyen Cao, aged 50 in Tay Hamlet, An Vinh Commune.

Another good thing for local fishermen is that traders are ready to buy big quantities of anchovies right at the port at high prices. Locals said that each coracle could earn millions of Vietnamese dongs per night.

Big crop of garlic

Joy also comes to those who chose to farm garlic in Ly Son.

Since the trademark of Ly Son garlic was recognized in the market, local farmers have not worried about the outlet of their garlic. This year, farmers become happier with big crops of garlic and high prices of garlic.

Traders ask to buy garlic while farmers harvest garlic, but many decide not to sell right now as they expect prices of garlic will go up.

Nguyen Thi Kha aged 58 in Dong Hamlet, An Vinh Commune, said that garlic is often planted in early August and harvested five months later.

The output is usually 1 tone per hectare but this year’s productivity has reached over 1.20 tone per hectare in some places.

According to Kha, the price of garlic this year is twice of that last year. Garlic is now sold at VND 12,000 per kg of fresh garlic and 70,000 VND per kg of dried garlic. According to Kha, she may earn some 20 million VND from her 2 ha of garlic farm.

Several local families that have larger farms of garlic could earn hundreds of millions of VND.
