Catholics presented with Xmas gifts

A delegation, including Nguyen Manh Hung, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, along with representatives of Dong Nai province’s authorities visited and presented gifts to Catholic dignitaries and their followers on December 13.


At the Xuan Loc Catholic Diocese, the delegation wished Bishop Nguyen Cu Trinh and several Catholic dignitaries and followers a merry and peaceful Christmas.


They presented gifts and praised Catholics contributions to implementing the Party’s policies and State’s laws, as well as their participation in emulation movements.


In 2010, over 900,000 Catholic followers in the province raised the provincial per capita income to 29 million VND (nearly 1,500 USD) per year.


The delegation hoped that Catholics would continue to contribute to the province’s socio-economic development.


Bishop Nguyen Cu Trinh thanked the delegation for their care and best wishes.


On the occasion, the delegation visited and presented gifts to a number of outstanding Catholic families that have made contributions to the nation’s revolutionary cause in Trang Bom district.

1,200 school-bags-cum-lifebuoys presented to students in Bac Lieu

PANO – The Bac Lieu Provincial People’s Committee and VietinBank have recently organised a ceremony to present 1,200 school-bags which can also be used used as lifebuoys, worth VND 198 million, to students crossing rivers by sampan to school in Bac Lieu Province.


Such a 0.6kg lifebuoy, able to store nearly 50kg of books and notebooks for under 5th graders, will help reduce the casualties of children in waterway accidents.


Along with the school-bags, VietinBank also gave Bac Lieu Province VND 15 billion to build 420 houses of gratitude and the Vam Leo Bridge linking Bac Lieu and Soc Trang.

VND 8 billion presented to Vietnam Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin

PANO – As much as VND 8 billion was donated for Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in the VTV1 live-broadcast programme, entitled “Justice and the Heart” held on August 8.


The programme, co-organised by the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA), Vietnam Television and the Thang Long Culture and Information Joint-stock Company, is to commemorate the annual “Day for Victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam” on August 10th and to honour and express deep gratitude to local individuals and organisations as well as international friends who have been greatly supporting victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin of Vietnam.


“The campaign for raising VND 64 billions designed for building 550 houses, 55 daily care centers, creating 1,100 jobs and providing 1,100 scholarships granted to the victims of Agent Orange launched by the Central Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Vietnam from August 2009, has achieved more results than expected”, said the VAVA President, Senior-Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh.


He added that “As of June 2010, the fund already reached VND 50 billions, corresponding to 78% of the plan”.


Addressing the programme, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan wholeheartedly expressed gratitude for all the gestures of golden hearts expressed by comrades, fellow countrymen in the country and abroad and international friends towards the victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam.


He proudly spoke of the efforts and the extraordinary will of victims of Agent Orange in overcoming all adverse conditions and diseases so that they may integrate themselves into surrounding communities.


The Deputy Prime Minister expected more and more organisations and individuals to be involved in the support to the Agent Orange victims, so that the pain of the victims may be alleviated.


Along with positive signals shared by four Vietnamese participants of the third hearing on the Agent Orange in Vietnam opened by the US Congress July of this year, audiences of the “Justice and the Heart” programme were also entertained with several interesting songs.

More cassettes presented to the Speaking Book Library for the Blind

The CapitaLand Company has offered 15,000 cassettes, valued at VND 100 million, to the Speaking Book Library for the Blind.


The Library will make tapescripts for nearly 100 book titles, including textbooks and literature books for children, from the cassettes.


All the free books will be presented to 85 schools and groups nurturing sightless children nationwide.


15 radio-announcer volunteers will read and record the book contents for blind children for their new academic year.


According to Ms Nguyen Huong Duong, Director of the Speaking Book Library for the Blind, the library needs 30,000 cassettes for sightless children to use each year.

Valuable musical documents presented to the Musicology Institute

PANO – On July 16th, the Musicology Institute under the Vietnam National Academy of Music received precious objects related to trational music, presented by Prof. Dr. Tran Quang Hai, a member of the International Council of Traditional Music.


These objects include 10 books, 5 CDs, and 5 DVDs, carefully selected from the valuable collection belonging to Prof. Dr. Tran Quang Hai family. These objects include New Grove’s dictionary of music and musicians (London, 1980), Dictionary of New Grove’s Musicial Instruments (London, 1984) and Asian Music Magazine. 


Prof. Dr. Tran Quang Hai hoped that his present would partly equip those studying music with basic knowledge about traditional music genres from different countries in the world, which will be very useful for their further study.

VND 3 billion presented to build school in Cuba

The Ben Tre Provincial Youth Union presented VND 3 billion to the Cuban Consulate in Vietnam under a programme titled “One million bricks for Cuban children” on June 26th.


The money will be used to build a school, named “Small-age Vietnamese friends” in the village of Ben Tre in the Batou district of the Cuban capital of La Havana.


The “One million bricks for Cuban children” program was jointly-organized by the Ben Tre Provincial Committee and Youth Union, the San Ho Island Creative Culture Company and the Youth Newspaper on March 29th to April 19th in various schools with diversity of forms and contents.


The program, a response to a campaign to build a school in Ben Tre village in Cuba, which was lauched 6 months ago, will partly promote the long-lasting friendship between Vietnam and Cuba.

50,000 maps of Hanoi to be presented to students

From June 23rd to July 10th, the Student Art and Literature Center, under the Vietnam Students’ Association, and the PICO Plaza electronic chain will present 50,000 Hanoi maps to students taking university entrance exams this year.


As the students arrive at the railway stations in Hanoi, Gia Lam, Long Bien, Giap Bat, or at bus stations in My Dinh, Luong Yen, Nuoc Ngam, Ha Dong, Hanoi, Giap Bat and Gia Lam, each student will receive Hanoi maps from student volunteers.


Reportedly, PICO Plaza will work with the Ministry of Education and Training and the Central Vietnamese Students’ Association on a ceremony, at a cost of VND 400 million, in September to honor the first laureates of the university entrance exams.


Moreover, PICO Plaza will offer discount programs to students between August to October.

VIFOTEC award presented to scientific innovators

The Vietnam Fund for Scientific and Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) award was presented to 39 winners of the 2009 competition for technical creativity in Hanoi on April 15.


The winners were announced by the Vietnam Union of Scientific and Technological Associations (VUSTA). They were selected from 105 entries in six categories – information technology and telecommunications, mechanics and automation, materials technology, environmental protection technology, energy saving technology, and applied biology.


Of the award winners, four won first prize, 10 second prize, 12 third prize, and 13 consolation prize. A female scientist was singled out by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for her innovation in water drainage and environmental protection.


Since the first VIFOTEC competition in 1995, nearly 2,000 scientists have been awarded.
