A thousand years of Vietnamese culture to shine in Grand Celebration

An art party in honor of the 1,000th anniversary of Hanoi will be not only for artists, but will also attract all sorts of people from districts throughout the capital.

One of the must-see places when you visit Hanoi is the Temple of Literature called Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam. It is a farmous historical and cultural site in the capital.

The Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism of Hanoi and the Vietnam Dancer’s Association have organized more than 30 dances over the past three years. They hope that these dances of simple movements will attract all of people to participate in street festivals during the event.

According to Dr. Luu Tran Tieu, President of the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association, Giong Saint Festival has been submitted to UNESCO for recognition as a world cultural heritage site; Thang Long Imperial Citadel received the honor last week. 

Director of the city’s Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Pham Quang Long, said that the department is preparing art programs for the 10-day Great Celebration.

A live television show titled, Dem huyen ao Ho Guom (The fanciful night of Sword Lake), organized in Hanoi and nine other cities and provinces throughout the country, as well 16 foreign cities where many Vietnamese reside, will be broadcast on Vietnam TV on the evening of October 10.


At 6 AM on October 10, all bells and drums in pagodas, churches and schools will sound the beginning of the great day. There will be a solemn ceremony, a national parade and a cultural festival at My Dinh National Stadium that day.


The Grand Celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi will set a record for the greatest number of artists to join any single event in Vietnamese history.


To date, 30 foreign art troupes from Italy, France, the US, Spain, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, Singapore, the UK, Korea, China, Rumania, Russia and more have registered to take part in various activities such as fine arts performances, food fairs, exhibitions, trade promotion activities and others.

Apart from local people, many foreign individuals and organizations have provided material and spiritual support for the Grand Celebration.

All four Vietnamese students won three second and one third prizes at the 17th International Mathematical Competition (IMC) held in the Bulgarian city of Blagoevgrad from July 25-26.     


All the winners, Trieu Quang Phong, Trinh Phuong Thu, Hoang Duc Trung and Doan Nguyen Nhut, come from Hanoi University of Science under VietnamNationalUniversity.  


With a total 176 points, Vietnamese team ranked 16th out of 94 universities from 44 participating countries.

Family artist members shine in special cai luong show

Cai luong’s lovers will have chance to enjoy a special program of the Southern traditional music performed by five generations of famous actors and actresses of the Minh To troupe.

The program titled, “Gin vang giu ngoc” (Keeping valuable treasure of traditional music), introduces two well-known cai luong classical plays to audiences: Cau tho yen ngua and Dieu Tam Xuan bao phu cuu (Dieu Tam Xuan takes a revenge of her husband) or Tram Trinh An (Beheading military general Trinh An).


Onstage, veteran couples Thanh Bach and Bach Le, Dien Thanh and Bach Luu, People’s Artist Thanh Tong, Truong Son, Thanh Loan, Bach Long, dramatic actor Thanh Loc and young actresses Tu Suong, Trinh Trinh and Que Tran will perform.


The Minh To troupe is regarded as a cai luong family with many talents, who always have done their best to restore and preserve the family tradition.


Director Vu Minh, who has a great love for cai luong, persuaded the Minh To Troupe to organize a special program to commemorate the traditional career of their family. Thanh Bach and Bach Le from France and Dien Thanh and Bach Luu from Australia were planning to visit their mother, the artist Huynh Mai, in Ho Chi Minh City, making the show possible. 


It is also a chance for family members to gather onstage.


The cai luong show will take place at Ben Thanh Theater in Ho Chi Minh City from July 23 to 25 and 30 to 31.

Celebrities shine at annual HTV Awards

More than 100 well-known actors and artists walked the red carpet on April 5 during the fourth annual HTV Awards at the Ho Chi Minh City Television Theater.

After a three-month voting process, nine awards were given out to the city’s favorite singers and actors.

In the TV category, actress Ngan Khanh and actor Thanh Nam won the Favorite Actress and Actor honors.

Khanh won for her role as “Hang” in the film Song tinh (The Wave of Love) while Nam won for his role as “Hai Lua” in the film Cuoc phieu luu cua Hai Lua (Hai Lua’s Adventure).

Actress Nguyet Anh and actor Tan Beo took the Favorite Supporting Actress and Actor awards, meanwhile.

Anh was recognized for her role as “Thu Cam” in the film Thu ba hoc tro (Mischievous Students) and Tan Beo was awarded for his role as “Quan” in the film Tinh an (Love Case).

In the theater category, the Best Dramatic Actress title went to veteran actress Kim Xuan. Thuy Nga won the Favorite Actor award and Thanh Ngan once again was named Favorite cai luong (southern folk opera) artist.

In the music category, Dam Vinh Hung was named Favorite Male Singer while My Tam won for Favorite Female Singer. Quang Dung, meanwhile, won the award for Most Friendly Singer.

Organized by Ho Chi Minh Television, the HTV Awards aim to honor popular artists who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Vietnamese music, theater and film based on viewers’ votes.
