Putin calls embattled doctor in show of support

In Uncategorized on December 18, 2010 at 9:56 am

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called an embattled doctor who is under pressure after his complaints of “window-dressing” unleashed a torrent of criticism, his spokesman said on Saturday.

The powerful Russian prime minister called cardiologist Ivan Khrenov on his mobile phone late Friday in a show of support, his spokesman told AFP.

“So are they putting the squeeze on you?” the premier asked the doctor in remarks confirmed by his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.

“Well, you do not worry, we will not leave you in the lurch. Call us if anything,” Putin told the doctor.

Khrenov, a young cardiologist from the central Russian town of Ivanovo, has become a reluctant national celebrity after he complained about “window dressing” at local hospitals during Putin’s recent visit.

He told Putin during a live call-in show this week that officials had told doctors to lie about their salaries. He also said medical equipment had been temporarily brought to a regional hospital from elsewhere.

Officials vehemently denied the accusations, with Ivanovo region governor Mikhail Men saying equipment like a CT scan could not have been removed from other hospitals simply because it is too big.

The General Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday the doctor’s report was being verified and local prosecutors said they planned to call in Khrenov for questioning.

Putin has expressed bewilderment at the report and said it had to be thoroughly checked.

Anecdotal evidence regularly emerges in Russia that local officials thoroughly prepare for Putin’s visits and often take it to extremes in order to please the top boss.

His marathon call-in show was seen as a reaffirmation of his status as the true Russian number one, even after handing the presidency to his protege Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Speculation is buzzing that he may be planning to return as head of state in 2012 elections.

New culture show to lure visitors to HCMC

QĐND – Saturday, October 23, 2010, 23:12 (GMT+7)

Starting this December, locals and tourists will have a chance to experience a cultural show organized by the Xin Chao Art performance Co. Ltd, featuring cultural traits of Vietnam to attract tourists.

Entitled “Xin Chao” (Hello), the premier with 50 artists will kick off on December 3 and will continue every night at 6.30pm at the Ho Chi Minh City Circus Theater at September 23 Park in District 1. Sunday shows are meant for kids and family with discount fares.

There will be three parts featuring the tale of Lac Long Quan and his wife Au Co, who are believed to be the first ancestors of Vietnam, heroines Trung Sisters and the contemporary life in Vietnam.

“Xin Chao” is the same genre as Cirque du Soleil, a dramatic mix of circus arts and performances originated from Canada that has been widely spread to Japan and Macau.

The script is written by Laura Burke, an American producer and director who have been living, working and researching on Vietnamese culture and history over the last 8 years. She has also participated in different art activities such as her recent staging a traditional musical show called Ho Xuan Huong at HCMC’s Opera House.

For this new project, Laura expects to employ Binh Dinh martial art and Vietnamese traditional and cultural habits into the show to attract international audience.

This is also a chance for young artists in different fields like circus, martial arts, aerobat and dancing to show off their talents in a big stage for long term.

“There are many tourists coming to HCMC every year. However, they are only hanging around bar, cinema or restaurant because there is no entertainment place with Vietnamese culture,” said Augustus Greaves, representative of the show.

“Vietnam is a beautiful country with a rich culture. We need to exploit the cultural traits to attract tourists and they will spend more and have more reasons to stay in Vietnam.”

Fifteen outstanding tour guides from travel agents across the country attended the final round of a contest held in Hanoi on August 15 by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism to honour the profession and set standards for tourism.

The participants, selected from more than 50 candidates from 14 key tourist cities and provinces, competed in many different fields of activity.

Saigontourist travel agency continued to assert its leading position among Vietnam’s travel companies with its candidates securing the highest awards at the contest.

First prize went to the company’s Huynh Cong Hieu, who also won the title for giving the most interesting narration in a video clip on Hoi An ancient town. Hieu received VND5 million in cash and a tourist package to the Republic of Korea for two people.

Another candidate from Saigontourist, Nguyen Quynh, came in second and also secured the talent event. Another second prize was presented to Nguyen Hong Nguyen from Hanoitourist.

This is the second time such a contest has been held by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism; the first one was held in 2000.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism prepared a bank of 150 thorny questions for the contest, one third of which were situational. The candidates need to be experienced and have a broad knowledge of cultural, social and economic affairs.

Flotilla probe will show Israel acted lawfully: Netanyahu

In Uncategorized on August 9, 2010 at 11:20 am

JERUSALEM, Aug 9, 2010 (AFP) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted Monday that Israel acted lawfully in a commando raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla which killed nine activists, in testimony before an Israeli panel.

“I am convinced that at the end of your investigation, it will become clear that the state of Israel and the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) acted in accordance with international law,” Netanyahu told members of the Tirkel Commission as he began testifying about the raid.

“I am the first one to appear before this honorable commission. Many others will appear after me, and I believe that all the details will become clear and you will get to the root of the truth,” he said.

The Israeli leader looked at ease as he entered the room shortly after 9:00 am (0600 GMT), smiling at the hoards of journalists and members of the public waiting to hear his sworn testimony.

After he took his seat, facing the panel bench with his back to the audience, the committee members made their way into the auditorium.

Opening the session, which was expected to last into the afternoon, committee chairman Yaakov Tirkel said some of Netanyahu’s testimony would be given verbally and some would be delivered in written form.

“As much as possible, the committee will try to let the prime minister give his testimony verbally or in written form,” he said.

Some of the session was expected to take place behind closed doors.

Netanyahu is the first of three top officials to give sworn testimony about the May 31 incident in which naval commandos stormed six aid ships trying to run the blockade on Gaza, killing nine activists and wounding scores of others.

(AFP file) A picture shows an undated image taken from the Free Gaza Movement website on May 28, 2010 of the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara taking part in the “Freedom Flotilla” headed to the Gaza Strip.

The bloody raid caused a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey and sparked global calls for an inquiry — prompting Netanyahu’s government to set up the Tirkel Commission to look into the legality of the operation.

Israel says its commandos resorted to force only after they were attacked when they rappelled onto the deck of the Turkish passenger ferry Mavi Marmara. But the activists on board say troops opened fire as soon as they landed.

Netanyahu was not likely to face any awkward questions on Monday as he testified before the five panel members, two foreign observers and hundreds of members of the press and public.

When the committee was created in June, Netanyahu’s office said its mandate was to examine the international legality of Israel’s naval blockade and of actions taken to enforce it, as well as the actions of those who organised and took part in the flotilla.

Panel members are not authorised probe the decision-making process which led up to the operation, nor do they have the authority to question troops involved in storming the boats.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak will take the stand on Tuesday, followed by Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi on Wednesday, with both likely to be quizzed over the operational aspects of boarding the ships.

Ashkenazi will be the only serving member of the military to testify before the committee.

The five-man panel, headed by Tirkel, a retired judge, began investigating the raid at the end of June, and its deliberations are being monitored by two international observers.

The creation of the panel, its members and its mandate were all backed by Israel’s cabinet. Its findings will be presented to the government, which has already blamed the bloodshed on the activists.

The Israeli military has already completed its own inquiry into the pre-dawn raid and concluded that although mistakes were made at a “relatively senior” level, the use of live fire was justified.

Israel has repeatedly said it has the right to stop vessels from reaching the Gaza Strip since they could be carrying weapons for the Islamist Hamas rulers of the enclave. Hamas is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state.

Last week UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon named his own panel to look into the botched raid, which is set to begin work on Tuesday and includes representatives from Israel and Turkey.

The UN Human Rights Council is also carrying out an inquiry, as is Turkey which is reportedly looking to make a criminal case against Netanyahu, Barak and Ashkenazi, charging them with piracy and murder.

New TV show features Khmer community

New TV show features Khmer community

QĐND – Thursday, August 05, 2010, 20:47 (GMT+7)

A TV series on the culture and lifestyle of the ethnic Khmer people living in Vietnam’s southwest region will be filmed this week.

The 30-part work, titled Hay Cung Em Dieu Sarikakeo (Join Me in the Sarikakeo Dance), is being made by Vang Mien Nam (Southern Gold) Film Studio, a private film and entertainment company in HCM City.

Based on a screenplay by Nguyen Thi Hong Xuan, it is about the life and love of Sophia, a Khmer woman who lives in a small village in Soc Trang province in the early 1980s.

The film recounts Sophia’s time as a Sarikakeo dancer in her native village before she moved to An Giang province and learned weaving.

Sarikakeo is a traditional dance of the Khmer.

Truong Son Hai, the film’s director, said he and his producer chose Xuan’s screenplay because few films had focused on this topic.

“We wanted to spotlight the Khmer people and their culture, lifestyle and dance,” he said.

Hai said his crew would begin filming in the Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta province of Soc Trang and then in Tra Vinh and Ca Mau. Skilled dancers from local traditional art troupes like Anh Binh Minh will be in the film.

There are nearly 1.3 million Khmer people in the delta, mostly in Soc Trang and Tra Vinh.

The Khmer celebrate their New Year’s festival, the Chol Chnam Thmay, which is similar to Vietnamese Tet Lunar New Year, following the Khmer traditional calendar.

During the festival, dozens of professional artists from local art troupes travel around the three provinces of Tra Vinh, Soc Trang and Ca Mau to perform special programmes featuring the culture and lifestyle of the Khmer.

Local people and visitors can participate in many cultural activities, such as music and singing programmes, traditional games and sports competitions launched by local authorities.
