O Quan Chuong relic site restored

QĐND – Tuesday, January 04, 2011, 20:43 (GMT+7)

PANO – An inauguration ceremony for the restored O Quan Chuong Relic Site was held on January 4th, 2011, at O Quan Chuong in Hanoi, with the presence of Mr. Michael Michalak, the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, and Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, Deputy-head of the Hanoi City People’s Committee.

O Quan Chuong, Hanoi’s last remaining ancient city gate and a landmark of Hanoi, was built in 1749 during the Le Dynasty, and ruined by the ravages of time.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Michalak expressed his happiness at the success of the first stage of the restoration of O Quan Chuong.

He also hoped that O Quan Chuong, the symbol of the resilience of the people of Hanoi, would be a symbol for the friendship between Vietnam and the U.S.A.

While looking around the restored O Quan Chuong, the U.S. Ambassador joyfully repeated the word “Great” many times.

On behalf of the Hanoi City People’s Committee, Ms. Hang expressed gratitude to the U.S. Embassy for its support for the restoration of the ancient city gate. She stressed that “This will be a symbol of the cooperation, respect and relationship between people of Vietnam and the U.S.A.”.

On this occasion, she asked relevant agencies to work with each other to carry out solutions to preserve and promote values of the O Quan Chuong relic site, in order to attract more and more domestic and international tourists to O Quan Chuong and the Capital of Hanoi.

Russia steps up battle to contain fire near nuclear site

In Uncategorized on August 12, 2010 at 11:21 am

MOSCOW, Aug 12, 2010 (AFP) – Russia on Thursday sent a special firefighting train to join over 3,400 firefighters battling to douse wildfires close to its top nuclear research centre, officials said.

While no blazes had been registered on the territory of the nuclear research centre in Sarov in central Russia itself, a nearby nature reserve has been on fire for around a week.

Authorities on Thursday were boosting firefighting teams to more than 3,400 people to keep the fire from spreading to Sarov, a town in the Nizhny Novgorod region still closed to foreigners as in Soviet times.

The nature reserve is located in nearby region of Mordovia and tree leaves and pine needles on the surface — and not the trees themselves — now are burning and smouldering, said Mikhail Turkov, a spokesman for the emergencies ministry’s Volga regional branch.

“Two planes and two helicopters are currently circling over Sarov,” Turkov told AFP. “Reconnaissance is being constantly conducted from the air.”

More than 3,400 people and a firefighting train were involved in putting out the fires, while a second train was currently on its way to the scene. The firefighting trains contain vast amounts of water and special hoses.

Volunteers relax as they prepare for extinguishing a fire at a forest near the village of Tokhushevo ,some 50 km outside Sarov on August 11, 2010. AFP

A new fire in the area broke out late Wednesday when lightening hit a pine tree, the local emergencies ministry said.

A spokeswoman for the Sarov nuclear center confirmed to AFP there were no fires on the centre’s territory and said its staff was not being evacuated. She declined to give further details.

Two soldiers were killed by blazing trees as they strove to put out a fire close to the centre on Monday.

Russia is battling what experts say is the worst heatwave in its millenium-long history which has affected nearly all areas of life and may shave off one percent from Russia’s gross domestic product, according to some estimates.

Old Hanoi house to be preserved as tourist site

Old Hanoi house to be preserved as tourist site

QĐND – Thursday, July 01, 2010, 21:23 (GMT+7)

Hanoi authorities have decided to preserve an old house at 11 Hang Bac Street, in Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem District, as a tourist site. Amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, the house looks like a small oasis, bringing passers by feelings of peace and tranquility.

The house is owned by Pham Ngoc Giao, eldest son of 98-year-old woman Pham Thi Te. His family bought the house in 1945.

The house exhibits harmony between Vietnamese décor and French architecture. Striking amid greenness of mature trees is the red-tiled roof, curved in the style of the traditional Vietnamese pagoda. Large pillars, many windows and separated rooms make people think of old houses in Paris.

The house has two storeys and has about 200 square meters of floor-space. It is in a poetic 180-square-meter garden with flowers, mature ornamental trees and clusters of bamboo. Paths in the garden are shaded by lines of areca and small bamboo trees, arousing in people peaceful images of the countryside.

Through ups and downs of history for nearly a century, the house has kept its old decorations and some wooden tables and chairs and paintings.

The house, particularly with the garden, has gained much attention and high evaluation from local and foreign experts. It has been listed in the book “The 36 guild streets area in Hanoi’s Ancient Quarter”, by Japanese experts.

After preservation, the house will be developed as a tourist destination for city tours in Hanoi. The site is expected to give visitors a glimpse of  old Vietnamese architecture and culture, as well as to give tourists a space of stillness and peace, escaping from the bustle of urban life.

The SITE statement did not say how Yazid died, but said the message from Al-Qaeda to jihadist forums said his wife, three of his daughters, his granddaughter, and other men, women, and children, were killed.

Yazid was on the list of individuals, organisations and charities whose assets were frozen by the US Treasury in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

According to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, it was Yazid who transferred funds via Dubai for Mohammed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi and Wal al-Shehri, three of the September 11 hijackers who flew aircraft into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

Yazid, said to be a former member of the Egyptian Jihad, has appeared in a number of videos released by Al-Qaeda since he first appeared as head of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan in May 2007.

His last public statement was in a message released on May 4, SITE said.
