Overseas students join new year festival

A Festival of Overseas Students to celebrate New Year 2011 opened in Hanoi on Dec. 29 with the participation of about 500 students.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan welcomes foreign students

The event, the ninth of its kind, was jointly organised by the Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper, the Vietnam Television, the Sinh Vien Viet Nam (Vietnamese Students) newspaper and the Quoc Anh International Education Consultancy (QA) company.


At the event, overseas students joined an incense-offering ceremony and an exchange programme to share experiences in study and career.


On the occasion, Nguyen Dac Vinh, chairman of the Vietnam Students’ Association and QA company presented certificates of merit and gifts to 30 outstanding students.


In the afternoon the same day, a delegation of 52 overseas students was received by Vice State President Nguyen Thi Doan in Hanoi.


The students, coming from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Japan, China and Singapore among others, were also presented with gifts and letters wishing for a new year.

17th World Festival of Youth and Students closes

A Vietnamese delegation led by Vo Van Thuong, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, has actively contributed to the success of the 17th World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS) which closed in South Africa on December 21.


It highlighted Vietnam’s efforts to promote the world youth and students movement for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.


At the festival, the Vietnamese delegation held 39 bilateral meetings with leaders from youth organizations of many countries and delivered reports at 80 seminars, conferences and international solidarity forums.


One of the reports that drew loud applause from leaders of WFYS 17, is related to the international tribunal against the imperialist use of Agent Orange during the war in Vietnam and its severe and long-lasting consequences on civilians.


In his closing speech, the President of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Julius Malema emphasised the success of the WFYS 17 as part of the struggle to defeat imperialism for a world of peace, solidarity and social transformation.


Mr Melema said that the festival brought into play the active role of young generations in fighting imperialism and strengthening solidarity and friendship among the progressive youths in the world. He also voiced support for the Cuban people, peace on the Korean peninsula and peace for Zimbabwe and other African nations.


He called for co-ordinated efforts in the struggle against imperialism for a world of peace without nuclear weapons and an international system based on social justice, national sovereignty, independence, freedom, security, solidarity and international cooperation.


He spoke highly of the Vietnamese people’s victories in the past struggle against US imperialists and their socio-economic achievements in the current process of socialist construction, considering them as valuable lessons for progressive and revolutionary forces in the world.

Vietnamese students bag first gold medals at AUG-15

Vietnamese students won their first medals on Dec. 16 at the on-going 15th ASEAN University Games (AUG-15) in Chiangmai, Thailand.


In the first day of competition, karatedo martial artists bagged two golds in the kata (performance) events for single women and men’s team and two silvers in the same events for single men and women’s team.


Also in the day, the table-tennis team surpassed Malaysian and Myanmar rivals in the qualifying round to berth a place in the next round and the beach volleyball team defeated Singaporean team 2-nil.


The Vietnamese team with two golds and two silvers is standing first in the medal tally, while Indonesia and Laos are runners-up. The host Thailand is ranked fourth with two bronzes, followed by Malaysia.


The AUG-15 will last until Dec. 23. The Vietnamese team competes in eight out of 17 sporting events, including athletics, pencak silat, football, swimming, table tennis, Taekwondo, karatedo and beach volleyball.


Besides sports competition, the students will also join in exchanges and tours to boost the mutual understanding between students of ASEAN countries.

Honda VN awards “Honda YES 2010” prizes to 10 students

On December 15th, the Honda Vietnam Company (HVN) granted The Honda Young Engineer & Scientist Awards (Honda YES) to 10 students from the University of Technology and the University of Science of the Hanoi National University, the University of Transport and Communications, the Hanoi, Da Nang and HCMC Universities of Science and Technology.


This is the 5th year the Honda YES has been carried out in Vietnam by HVN, in cooperation with the Honda Foundation and the National Institute for Science and Technology Policy and Strategy Studies (NISTPASS).


The ten Honda YES 2010 Awards, in total worth US$ 30,000, and ten Honda Wave 110S motorbikes (each prize amounts to US$ 3,000 plus a motorbike).


Besides, the Honda YES awardees might have chance to receive the YES Plus prizes of US$ 10,000 each, if they apply for post graduate programs in Japan.

Competition to create games held among junior students

A competition has been held for junior students in the country to develop students’ creativity, announced the Pioneer Teenager newspaper’s representatives at a press briefing on Monday.

A traditional game strengthens collective spirit

The competition to create games involved in groups of students is held by the Thieu Nien Tien Phong (the Pioneer Teenager newspaper), the Department of Students’ Affairs under the Ministry of Education and Training and the Swiss’s Sugus sweets.


Participants will draw their own ideas of the games on paper. These most interesting games of the final round will be played in 74 schools in the country to find out the best ones.


Vu Quang Vinh, Editor –in –chief of the Thieu Nien Tien Phong newspaper, said students can create new games or change available games to suit teenagers of the same ages and psychology at present. These games with building team or group work and collective spirit will be highly praised.


The total prizes for individuals and collectives will be up to VND400 million. However, the most valuable prize, according to the organizers, is that more interesting games will be enjoyed by students in break times or after strained studying hours.

GE constructs US$1 million first training laboratory for Vietnamese students

GE inaugurated its first training laboratory at University of Technical Education (UTE) in Ho Chi Minh City on December 9 in response to a growing demand for the education of Vietnam students to the power industry.

The training center contributes to GE’s efforts in improving education opportunities for Vietnamese students. In addition the long established program ‘Scholar-Leader Scholarship’ as well as Vietnam – US Education Task Force were sponsored by GE Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the General Electric Company.

The new laboratory is a high-tech facility for students, which they will be trained on the most advanced and ‘up to date’ Electrical Distribution and Control Equipment.


The total investment of this training center is over US$1 million. It helps with the integration of electrical equipment and systems, used in power distribution. It also protects and controls residential, commercial and industrial applications.

The equipment was donated by several businesses of GE. It is estimated that the newly opened center will attract more than 100 students per day.


Mr. Luis Ramirez, – CEO & President of GE Industrial Solutions said, “We are very excited that GE could help Vietnam students. It was great to find the students eager to study and find out how our equipment is manufactured, assembled and operated. Our initiative of establishing a training center was based on their requests, which has now turned into reality.”

Attending this inauguration were: Luis Ramirez – CEO & President of GE Industrial Solutions, along with James Fisher – CEO & President of GE Industrial Solutions Asia Pacific, Stuart Thomson, Bobby Lubana – General Manager SEA, GE Industrial Solutions  and Nguyen Dinh Manh Chien – Country Manager, Indochina of GE industrial Solutions, Le Thanh An, the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, Do Quoc Anh – Director General, Director of the Representative Agency of Ministry of Education & Training in the South and the faculty and the students of UTE.

‘Thuy’s Dream’ motivates students in schools

The weekly flag raising ceremony every Monday in schools has enthused many students in Ho Chi Minh City.

The ceremony held in high schools such as Marie Curie in District 3 and Nguyen Du in District 10 recently, has left a deep impression on students.


The ceremony is held under a program called ‘Thuy’s Dream’ initiated by Tuoi Tre Newspaper. This program was created to help and support pediatric cancer patients. It is dedicated to the memory and spirit of the late high school student Le Thanh Thuy, who died of bone cancer in 2007.  Thuy was awarded the HCMC Outstanding Young Citizens award in 2006.


Many students were moved to tears as they listened to a letter that Thuy had written to her parents thanking them for their love and care, as she struggled against cancer and her longing to come back to school.


The story of Thuy has aroused many students to live better and more meaningful lives. It is a sensitive and inspiring story of courage, human values and a profound understanding of life.


Many students have been encouraged to register as volunteers for the program. The City’s schools have also supported the organizing of such a weekly flag raising ceremony and bring school children to understand the ideals of Thuy.


Students in Nguyen Thai Binh High School in Tan Binh District and Bach Dang Secondary School in District 3 have also participated in general knowledge quizzes and brief stories by their headmasters.


Deputy headmaster of Nguyen Du High School, Pham Duc Hung, suggested that schools should vary their topics for discussion in order to make it interesting for students. According to him topics such as future careers, family values, relationships and loyalty to country could be both interesting and inspiring for students.

PANO- A Vietnamese sports delegation, including 157 students, coaches, officials and referees, has left Hanoi to attend the 15th ASEAN University Games 2010 (AUG 15) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from December 15th to 23rd.


Vietnamese students will compete in 8 out of 17 events, including athletics, Pencak silat, football, swimming, table tennis, Teakwondo, Karatedo and volleyball.


In addition, during the games, there are also other activities between sports delegations from ASEAN countries, such as cultural exchanges and guided tours.


The Vietnamese delegation also brings to the Games many national traditional gifts, such as images of Long Bien Bridge and Khue Van Cac, to help regional friends learn more about Vietnam’s culture and people.

1,200 school-bags-cum-lifebuoys presented to students in Bac Lieu

PANO – The Bac Lieu Provincial People’s Committee and VietinBank have recently organised a ceremony to present 1,200 school-bags which can also be used used as lifebuoys, worth VND 198 million, to students crossing rivers by sampan to school in Bac Lieu Province.


Such a 0.6kg lifebuoy, able to store nearly 50kg of books and notebooks for under 5th graders, will help reduce the casualties of children in waterway accidents.


Along with the school-bags, VietinBank also gave Bac Lieu Province VND 15 billion to build 420 houses of gratitude and the Vam Leo Bridge linking Bac Lieu and Soc Trang.

State Vice President welcomes Lao students

State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan on November 22 received a delegation of 19 former Lao students who had studied and undertaken research in Vietnam.


The Vice State President applauded the visit, which took place on the occasion of Vietnam Teachers’ Day (November 20), saying that it revealed the former Lao students’ deep sentiments towards their Vietnamese teachers.


Mrs. Doan thanked the Lao Party, State and people for their valuable support for Vietnam during the struggle for national independence in the past as well as the current national construction and defence.


She said she was pleased with the fact that the former Lao students are now holding important positions in various fields in their country.


The former Lao students’ successes are significant gifts for Vietnamese teachers, she said, adding that they also act as a bridge for strengthening the Vietnam-Lao special friendship and comprehensive cooperation.


On behalf of the former students, Somkot Mangnomek, Party Committee Secretary and Mayor of Xieng Khouang province, expressed thanks to the Vietnamese Party, State and people for training thousands of Lao students, a remarkable human resource for the development of the Lao country.


The former Lao students said they were moved to return to Vietnam, which is considered their second homeland, by their unforgettable memories of Vietnamese teachers and friends.


They affirmed that whatever positions they hold, they would always look towards Vietnam, wherever they had lived and studied, and would try their best to foster the special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos.


On the occasion, State Vice President Doan presented the Friendship Order offered by State President Nguyen Minh Triet to Somkot Mangnomek for his important contributions to consolidating and developing Vietnam-Laos ties.
