Asian Pupils’ Table Tennis Championship opens

The 2010 Asian Pupils’ Table Tennis Championship got underway at the Hai Duong Sports Centre on October 22.


The tournament has attracted 85 players from mainland China, Hong Kong (China), Macao (China), Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam to compete in seven events.


It provides an excellent opportunity for regional coaches, referees and athletes to exchange their experiences and improve the quality of physical training and sports qualifications in schools.


The tournament will finish on October 26.

PetroVietnam table tennis team competes at regional games

The PetroVietnam table tennis team left on July 26 for the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE) Games in Singapore from July 27 to August 2.


The team, who won the men’s team gold medal at the International Table Tennis Golden Paddle Tournament last week, will compete with a five-member squad including two-time Olympian Doan Kien Quoc, Ho Ngoc Thuan, Ha Minh Tuan and two Chinese players Kou Lei and Yang Ce.


This will be the first time that the team have taken part in the annual tournament, said the team coach Truong Thoi Nhiem.

Table tennis tourney begins in Ba Ria-Vung Tau

The 24th Golden Racket International Table Tennis Tournament kicked off in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on July 13.


The even, which will run until July 18, is being jointly held by the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation, the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the HCM City Table Tennis Federation, the Oil and Gas Culture, Sports Joint Stock Company and the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.


The event has attracted 106 players from seven countries and territories, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, Hong Kong and Vietnam.


This year, the RoK team, with the largest number of players, is expected to be the tournamen’s favourites.


The Vietnamese teams include the national team, a team from HCM City and the Petro Vietnam club.


The PetroVietnam club team will include Doan Kien Quoc, the country’s No.1 player and Tran Tuan Quynh from the national team plus three Chinese players, Kou Lei, Yang Cei and Yang Xin.


This is the first year that the tournament has been held outside of HCM City.

Fifteen teams from around the country took part in the 28th National Table Tennis Championships, Nhan Dan (People) newspaper Cup, held in the southern city of My Tho, Tien Giang province May 10.


The event, which was organised by the Nhan Dan newspaper, is part of the 6th National Sport Games.


The tournament saw top leading players competing for the men’s and women’s events, singles, doubles and team.

Vietnamese tennis athlete snags two junior cup titles

Vietnam’s Huynh Phuong Dai Trang swept the women’s singles and doubles titles at Vietnam International Junior Tennis Championship Techcombank Cup.


Trang, 16, beat Russian fourth seed Anna Tyulpa 6-1, 6-2 to win the singles title at Quan Hoa tennis court in Hanoi on Oct. 17.


The 16-year-old dominated Tyulpa in the first set with powerful serves and backhands, winning in 21 minutes.


Tyulpa regrouped to lead the first game of the second set but was overtaken by hard shots to the corners by Trang, the tournament’s top seed, who cruised home 6-2 in 27 minutes.


In the doubles title final, HCM City products Trang and Nguyen Ai Ngoc Van beat Tyulpa and fellow Russian Kristina Chasovskikh, 7-6 (3), 7-5.


In the men’s side, teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien and partner Leander Lazaro of the Philippines beat Tefan Milenkovic and Oskar Wikberg from Sweden, 7-5; 6-3.


Earlier, Wikberg won the men’s singles title when he beat countryman Stefan Lindmark.
Thien, 14, played below his potential in the singles to be defeated 4-6; 4-6 by Wikberg in the semi-final.
