Fifth VTV Binh Dien int’l volleyball tournament opens

Fifth VTV Binh Dien international volleyball tournament was inaugurated in the sports centre in Dong Nai province on January 8.

This year the event attracted three leading teams of the championships in 2010, including LienViet bank, Vietsopetro and VTV Binh Dien-Long An. In addition, the organising board invited foreign teams from Thailand, China and Australia.  

The first prize is worth US$10,000, the second, third and fourth prizes are US$6,000, US$4,000 and US$1,000, respectively.

In addition, one style prize and seven individual prizes will be awarded.

Vietnam hosts the Youth League Asia Pacific Baseball Tournament 2011

The Youth League Asia-Pacific Baseball Tournament 2011 will take place for the first time in Vietnam from January 13th to 16th to select the best teams from the Asian Pacific who will compete in the World Cup Baseball 2011 in Texas, US in August 2011.

The U10 and U12 teams of the Hanoi Baseball Club will join the tournament.

The event is organized by the General Department of Sports and Physical Training; the Vinh Phuc People’s Committee; the Vinh Phuc Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism; and the Hanoi Baseball Club.

Tien Minh to join tournament for world’s top 8

Nguyen Tien Minh has recently been confirmed one of eight places to compete at the World Super Series Final from January 5-9 in Taiwan, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Ranked sixth on the BWF Super Series Ranking, the Vietnamese No.1 player will join with seven others including Malaysian Lee Chong Wei, Long Chen and Pengyu Du from China, Thai Boonsak Ponsana, Peter Hoeg Gade and Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, and Taufik Hidayat from Indonesia.

They will be drawn in two groups to play single round-robin format to select four best players to advance to the semifinals.

Whatever the result, each participant player will get a cash prize of at least US$4,250. Semifinalists will earn $10,000. Top two winners will win $40,000 and $20,000 respectively.

With Vietnam ‘s top-seeded Grandmaster Le Quang Liem suffering his first defeat on Jan. 6, the HDBank Open Cup chess tournament has been thrown wide open.

At the Rex Hotel in HCM City , Liem, the world No 79, surprisingly lost to eighth-seeded Filipino GM Gomez John Paul in the fifth round.

Paul now tops the table with five points.

He is followed by Chinese GM Yu Yangyi with 4.5 points and Vietnamese GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, who is on four points after beating another Chinese GM Zhou Weiqi on Jan. 6.

The loss has left 20-year-old Liem on 3.5 points. With just four more rounds to go, Liem may have left himself with too much to do to win his first title of the year.

Earlier, he had beaten Singapore ‘s Fernandez Daniel Howard in the first round and China ‘s GM Lou Yiping in the second round, drew with Bitoon Richard of the Philippines, and beat compatriot Nguyen Duc Hoa in the fourth.

Also on 3.5 points are GMs Cao Sang and Tran Thanh Tu of Vietnam , Richard, GMs Laylo Darwin and Salvador Roland and IMs Barbosa Oliver and Dimakiling of the Philippines, GMs Wen Yang, Zhao Jun, and Wang Chen of China .

The week-long tournament has attracted 30 Vietnamese players and 35 others from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and Ukraine. .

It concludes on Jan. 9.

National Student Football tournament kicks off

The final round of the National Student Football Tournament took place on October 28th at the Chi Lang Stadium in Da Nang City with the participation of 16 teams from universities nationwide.

These teams will play in a round-robin format in four groups to select the two best ones of each group for the semi-final. The final match will be played on November 7th.

Teams from the Hanoi Polytechnic University, the Da Nang University, the Ho Chi Minh City Sports and Physical Training Pedagogy University and the Thai Nguyen University are regarded as the strongest ones.

The ongoing event aims to motivate the sport activities of university and college students nationwide.

Young Vietnamese players to compete at regional football tournament

The Vietnamese U19 National Squad will play Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan at the final round of the Asian U19 Football Championship 2010.

At 4.30pm on October 4 in China, the young Vietnamese players play their first match with Jordan, a strong team in the region.

This is the first time the Vietnamese U19 squad will play at the final round of the football tournament, however, the team will try to earn 3 points from its first match.

According to coach Trieu Quang Ha, the squad, with young players gathered from national tournaments, have prepared carefully for the upcoming matches played last month, and he hoped that the team will try its best during the tournament.

Earlier, the Vietnam U19 squad won two matches and drew one against the Korean U19 squad, said to be one of the best teams in the region.
