Two hours of TV-watching boosts heart risk

In Uncategorized on January 12, 2011 at 7:09 am

People who spend more than two hours per day of leisure time watching television or sitting in front of a screen face double the risk of heart disease and higher risk of dying, a new study said.

Researchers said the effect was seen regardless of how much people exercised, indicating that how we choose to spend our free time away from work has a huge impact on our overall health.

“It is all a matter of habit. Many of us have learned to go back home, turn the TV set on and sit down for several hours — it’s convenient and easy to do,” said Emmanuel Stamatakis, expert in epidemiology and public health at University College London.

“But doing so is bad for the heart and our health in general,” said Stamatakis, who along with the other study authors is advocating public health guidelines to warn of the risks of being inactive during non-work hours.

A family watching TV. People who spend more than two hours per day of leisure time watching television or sitting in front of a screen face double the risk of heart disease and higher risk of dying, a new study has shown

Such warnings are urgent, “especially as a majority of working age adults spend long periods being inactive while commuting or being slouched over a desk or computer,” said the study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Researchers studied data from 4,512 adults who took part in the Scottish Health Survey of households.

The information on screen time came from self-reported data about TV or DVD watching, leisure time computer use and playing video games.

When scientists compared people who reported spending less than two hours a day in front of screen-based entertainment to those who spent four or more hours per day, they found a 48 percent higher risk of death from any cause.

In those spending just two or more hours per day in front of screen after work, they also found a 125 percent higher risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack.

“These associations were independent of traditional risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, BMI (body mass index), social class, as well as exercise,” the study noted.

However researchers were able to make associations between the levels of inflammation and cholesterol in sedentary people.

“One fourth of the association between screen time and cardiovascular events was explained collectively by C-reactive protein (CRP), body mass index, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,” said the study.

CRP, an indicator of low-grade inflammation, was about twice as high in people who spent more than four hours of free time daily in front of a screen compared to people who spent less than two hours a day.

Stamatakis said he intends to continue to study how prolonged sitting impacts human health and how lifestyle changes could be advocated to reduce the amount of time people spend inactive.

Two cold fronts make their ways to Vietnam

In Uncategorized on January 8, 2011 at 4:29 am

A cold front has moved into northern Vietnam while another is likely to follow on January 5 making the northern and central regions extreme cold in several portions in the next six to eight days.

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center said that the later cold front will even affect the southern region, making the temperature slide below 21 degree Celsius in Ho Chi Minh City.

Meanwhile, the northern provinces will be benumbed with the mercury plunge to only 0 degree Celsius. Frost is forecast to occur in several areas.

The country waters will continuously experience northeasterly winds at level 6-7 (39-61 kilometers an hour) and gales up to level 8-9 (62-88 kilometers an hour) in the next ten days.

Boat should keep watch of waves up to 3-5 meters.

Two Koreas take tough stance as think-tank warns of war

In Uncategorized on December 24, 2010 at 5:57 am

The two Koreas are still talking tough one month after the North’s artillery bombardment sent tensions soaring, with Pyongyang threatening nuclear war and Seoul vowing strong retaliation for any new attack.

One day after deploying tanks, artillery and jet fighters in a military show of force, Seoul’s defence ministry said Friday that a giant Christmas tree near the North Korean border would stay lit up till January 8.

The move is likely to anger Pyongyang since the date marks the birthday of its heir apparent Kim Jong-Un. The communist North sees the tree topped with a glowing cross as a provocative propaganda symbol.

The ministry said it hoped to send “a message of peace to the North” and the timing was just a coincidence.

South Korean Army K-9 155mm self-propelled Howitzers fire live rounds during joint air and ground military exercises on the Seungjin Fire Training Field, in mountainous Pocheon.

An international think-tank urged the two Koreas to accept international arbitration to redraw the flashpoint disputed Yellow Sea border.

“Measures must urgently be adopted to reduce the possibility of all-out war”, the International Crisis Group said in a report.

The North said Thursday it was ready for a “sacred war” using its nuclear weapons, as the South held its second live-fire drill in a week.

Pyongyang’s armed forces minister Kim Yong-Chun said the South’s firing drill Monday, on Yeonpyeong island near the Yellow Sea border, was a preparation for a new Korean war.

“The revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK (North Korea) are getting fully prepared to launch a sacred war of justice of Korean style based on the nuclear deterrent at any time necessary to cope with the enemies’ actions deliberately pushing the situation to the brink of a war,” Kim said.

The North on November 23 bombarded Yeonpyeong, killing four people including civilians. Pyongyang said it was retaliating for a South Korean firing drill that dropped shells into waters that it claims are North Korean territory.

The South’s military, accused of a perceived feeble response to last month’s bombardment, has been stressing it will hit back harder next time, using air power.

President Lee Myung-Bak, visiting a frontline army unit Thursday, warned of severe retaliation for any new attack.

“We’ve endured for long enough. We thought we could maintain peace on this land if we endured, but that was not the case,” Lee said. “Now we need to strongly retaliate to maintain peace, deter provocations and prevent war.”

People in the North, the president said, “are almost starving to death, and with the money spent to make atomic bombs, people could live”.

The United States has firmly backed its ally the South and urged China to do more to restrain its own ally, the North.

The North’s latest comments prompted the US State Department to chide it for its “belligerent tricks”.

“We need constructive actions, not heated rhetoric,” spokesman Philip Crowley said.

Despite earlier strong threats, the North did not retaliate for Monday’s firing drill on Yeonpyeong. It also offered nuclear concessions, according to US politician Bill Richardson, who ended a visit to Pyongyang this week.

Richardson said the North agreed to readmit UN atomic inspectors and negotiate the sale of nuclear fuel rods to a third party.

The New Mexico governor, who has longstanding contacts with North Korea, said Thursday the United States should consider resuming talks with the North.

Richardson said a resumption of six-nation talks — under which the North earlier agreed to give up its nuclear weapons in return for aid — could help prevent a new escalation of tensions.

If “they don’t react militarily again to this recent drill, then maybe the time has come for the six-party talks,” he told CNN, referring to the South Korean exercise staged Thursday.

On December 17, the body of Tran Chuong had been recovered while authorities were able to save 34 year old Nguyen Quan.

The accident was caused by giant waves and fierce winds lashing the area as a northerly cold front has affected the country for the last few days. The boat was on its way to Chan May Port when it was overwhelmed by the ferocious waves.

The local army personnel and authorities have mobilized 35 soldiers to continue search for the remaining two fishermen.

Phu Loc District has assisted each of the five fishermen’s families with VND3 million.

In the northern province of Hai Phong, 23 members on board the Phu Tan Vessel have gone missing for three days and have as yet not been found. Rescue forces are continuing the search operations.

Two Chinese missing after clash with S.Korea coast guard

In Uncategorized on December 18, 2010 at 9:57 am

Two Chinese fishermen are missing and another is in a critical condition after their trawler collided with a South Korean coastguard ship Saturday and capsized, officials said.

South Korean Coast Guard patrols near a group of disputed islets.

Four coastguard officers were also injured as they tried to arrest the crew of the Chinese boat for illegal fishing off South Korea’s Eocheong island in the Yellow Sea.

The Chinese fishermen attacked the Korean officers with iron pipes and clubs, the Yonhap news agency quoted the coastguard as saying.

The 63-ton Chinese boat capsized after it collided with the 3,000-ton coastguard ship, leaving two of its crew members missing. Eight other Chinese were rescued but one was in a coma and taken to hospital by helicopter.

Eight boats and four helicopters were searching for the missing.

Illegal Chinese fishing is common in South Korean waters. In 2008 a South Korean coast guard officer was attacked and drowned while trying to inspect a Chinese boat operating illegally.

The South Central Regional Hydro Meteorological Center said that the flooding was triggered by heavy rain combined with the release of floodwater from the reservoirs on the previous day.

Several areas in Nha Trang City and Dien Khanh District were badly submerged with many portions under 1.5 meters of water.

According to the Khanh Hoa Province Flood and Storm Prevention Center, all irrigation reservoirs in the area are reducing the release of water. The reservoirs are too full. So if it continues raining heavily, they will be forced to discharge more floodwater.

The same day, the train-track through Suoi Cat Community, was repaired, allowing thousand of passengers that were stranded on the trains, to travel through at only 5 kilometers an hour.
