VNA provides more support for AO victims

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has organised a wide range of charity activities in support for Agent Orange/dioxin victims nationwide on the occasion of the Agent Orange Day, which falls on August 10.

A total of 601 million VND plus 22 wheelchairs, two houses and a laptop have been presented to the victims, through the VNA’s Relief Fund for AO Victims.

Of the total, ten AO victims in Lap Thach district, Vinh Phuc province received five million VND and two wheelchairs while victims in the northern province of Ninh Binh received five million VND and ten wheelchairs.

The fund also handed over 20 million VND to ten former members of the youth volunteer force who were afflicted by AO in the central province of Quang Tri .

In the central province of Thanh Hoa, the fund presented a laptop to Le Van Viet, who has just graduated from Hong Duc University, and two million VND for Le Thi Tham, a 7 th grader. The provincial association of AO victims also got 50 million and five wheelchairs.

Other provinces receiving presents includes Bac Giang, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Hai Duong and Hai Phong.

On the occasion, through VNA’s 57 domestic bureaus, the fund presented 486 million VND and several houses for victims in provinces of Lao Cai and Thai Nguyen, raising the total number of houses the agency has built to 17.

Currently, the fund is continuing to mobilise support from individuals and organisations both inside and outside the country. In one noteworthy donation, the Greek Embassy in Vietnam contributed 745 million VND and 90 wheelchairs.

VNA publishes poster of World Cup fixtures

On June 4, the Vietnam News Agency’s Publishing and Advertisement Promotions Centre published thousands of 2010 World Cup poster sized schedules, just a week before the world’s largest sporting event kicks off in South Africa.

The poster features pictures of all the 32 participating teams and provide a full timetable of the fixtures, venues, dates and times of all the matches (according to Vietnamese time).

It has been co-sponsored by several local banks and companies, including Vietcombank, Van Tan Trade and Services, the pharmaceuticals firm Renozax, the Mobido Vietnam Joint Stock Company, the Thuan Phat Group and Eresson Beverages.

VNA journalists hold sixth congress

The sixth congress of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) chapter of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association chapter took place in Hanoi on May 14, focusing on raising the role of a state news agency and building VNA into a strong national communications group.

In his report, VNA Vice General Director Ha Minh Hue, Chairman of the VNA chapter for the 2005-2010 term, highlighted that the chapter thoroughly grasped and played the role of a political, social and professional organisation in the past term.

As one of the country’s largest chapters and experiencing 65 years of developing along with the country, VNA has made great efforts to maintain its position as a strategic, reliable news agency of the Party, State and people, the VNA chapter chairman said.

VNA experienced difficult stages and challenges for development, VNA became a prestigious news agency in the region as well as the world, contributing to the common development of the country’s revolutionary press, he added.

He praised the news agency’s strength with a network of domestic bureaus in 63 provinces and cities nationwide and 26 overseas bureaus around the world.

He stressed VNA’s right step of establishing a VNA television channel, catching up with the modern press’s trend in the region and the world.

VNA General Director Tran Mai Huong said that in the new term (2010-2015), the VNA chapter needs to foster and improve awareness on politics, professional skills and social accounbility for its members in combination with the “studying and following Ho Chi Minh’s moral example” movement.

He emphasised the chapter executive board’s due attention to VNA major programmes, particularly improvement of news quality and competitiveness.

The agency’s tasks in the coming years require each journalist to unceasingly improve professional skills, meeting the tasks’ demand as well as maintaining its position as the strategic information centre of the Party and the main reliable resources of the society.

The congress elected a 19-member executive board with VNA Vice General Director Ngo Ha Thai as chairman for the 2010-2015 term.

VNA opens air route to Shanghai

The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA) on April 30 launched a direct air route from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai, at the Shanghai JC Mandarin hotel. 

There will be four flights a week by an Airbus A321 plane.

This is the fifth direct air route between Vietnam and China, bring VNA’s total flights between the two countries to 30 every week.

On this occasion, VNA and the General Department of Tourism launched a promotional campaign to present the new destination.

VNA increases domestic flights

Vietnam Airlines plans to increase the number of domestic flights to serve holiday makers during the celebration of the Liberation of South Vietnam (April 30) and May Day.  

There will be 198 additional flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and between Hanoi and Da Nang.

Vietnam Airlines will use large planes for international routes to Asian countries like the Republic of Korea, Japan, China and Thailand.

VNA cuts flight prices by 70 percent

The state-owned carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA) said September 16 it would cut ticket prices by 60 to 70 percent for all flights from the beginning of next month to the end of January, 2010.

Passengers can buy tickets from October 1 to 20 at VNA’s agents or by accessing its website.

Tickets are non-refundable.

This is the biggest promotion by VNA so far in its history.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Yen, director of VNA’s southern branch, this promotion is expected to boost domestic tourism demand and attract more foreign visitors to Vietnam during the peak tourism season from November to March.
